Jerry O’Connell is set to star opposite Eddie Izzard and Charity Wakefield in NBC’s Munsters reboot Mockingbird Lane. The pilot, written by Bryan Fuller and to be directed by Bryan Singer, is described as a reinvention of the 1960s sitcom about The Munsters, a family of “monsters” — vampires, werewolves and Frankenstein, and their “plain” cousin (Wakefield) — that will feature striking visuals in the vein of Fuller’s ABC dramedy Pushing Daisies. O’Connell will play family patriarch, the handsome and gangly Herman Munster, a great dad and devoted husband. He is married to Lily, a vampire, with whom he has fathered a 10-year-old boy, Eddie (Mason Cook). Strong but sentimental, Herman works at a funeral home, and worries that Eddie’s transformation into a werewolf and burgeoning awareness of his family’s origins will crush the boy’s spirit. Fred Gwynne played the role in the original Munsters sitcom. Izzard plays Grandpa in the reboot.

I don’t know, I think the casting can work. Remember, this is NOT the old Munsters. It’s a dramedy. Don’t expect a Fred Gwynne impression because it’s impossible.
They mentioned that Herman will take a slightly smaller role in the reboot and that Grandpa is the head honcho around the house. I think I heard that the romance between Herman and Lily will be played up. Think Pushing Daisies everyone. So you need someone that is younger and attractive for a Frankenstein.
I’m getting that sense, too. Hermann & Lily = love story, Grandpa = comic relief, Eddie = kid appeal. Eh, could work. I’m trying to evict the original Munsters from my mind, since this is definitely not going to be that.
not like i was going to waste my time on this anyway, but this just ices the cake.
Hollywood wants a Herman Munster that 30-something women would be OK with boning? We live in a strange world.
I think you’ve hit it right on the head, why O’Connell was cast. It’s to get women to watch.
Who watches fantasy-comedy-horror? Women do. Especially with Fuller in charge, this show is not going to be male-demographic-friendly.
I know of no straight males who could sit through one episode of Pushing Daisies without squirming and fearing for their testosterone levels.
This is a typical NBC network type show. It makes me want to barf when I read the show descriptions. Do they make intentionally unwatchable shows on purpose? What garbage.
Jerry is a nice guy.
But this seems like a clusterfuck.
I kind of think it might be an inspired choice. I recently saw O’Connell in Seminar on Broadway and was totally blown away. The kid can flat out act. Who knew?
I can’t imagine this being a good idea for the series or for JO’s career. When you’re the b-list Jason Bateman, best to avoid Universal Studios remakes.
More recycled Hollywood garbage. Doesn’t matter who’s in it. It’ll more than likely not get past the pilot stage, let’s hope.
career suicide.
