EXCLUSIVE: The Weinstein Company has set Jonah Hill to play a role in Django Unchained, which is in production. I’m trying to find out who he’ll be playing, but am told it won’t be Scotty Harmony, the kid who loses Django’s slave wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) to Calvin Candie, a charming but utterly evil plantation owner, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, which sets up a showdown with Django, the former slave turned bounty hunter played by Jamie Foxx.
Hill was eyed for the role early on, but had to turn it down because his schedule was so busy. He’s back in another role. Hill, repped by WME and Karl Austen, will next be seen in the Fox comedy The Watch and is also starring opposite DiCaprio in the Martin Scorsese-directed The Wolf Of Wall Street.

Smart move.
Jonah Hill’s an extremely talented kid, but as exhibited in Moneyball, it’s important for him to explore a wider terrain and not just focus on being funny. Obviously, he’s funny, but he’s too damn young to be producing (Allen Gregory) or writing or trying to build an empire.
You see this a lot with lots of comedy actors. They get a taste of success, and suddenly they wanna be Brian Grazer. It’s just like athletes who take the sponsorship and TV ads too seriously, and start to believe they are icons before they even reach 30.
Jonah should just sit back, act, and pick good roles. Good to hear QT has hired him.
That bit in the first paragraph was the longest sentence ever.
The first paragraph IS one sentence :S.
Careful of the SPOILERS please…
I think Tarantino is going overboard with his stunt casting. I love Jonah Hill, great kid, but completely wrong for this type of movie.
Sometimes Tarantino tries to be too clever with his casting, and hurts his movies. I love Jackie Brown, but can’t help but think of how much better the film would’ve been with Robert DeNiro in the Max Cherry role. DeNiro apparently fought hard for the role, but QT insisted on Robert Forster, who hasn’t really been heard from since.
Wouldn’t be surprised if Tarantino wanted somebody else but lived with this decision based on the name.
Definitely doesn’t belong but this town seems to think Hill is the next big movie star. Not sure about that one…
Forster was brilliant in that movie!
No one has better good fortune in casting than QT.
It’s ok that we haven’t seen much of Forster, he had 30 years under his belt by the time he made Jackie Brown. Maybe he’s retired.
Dude, you new to the biz?
Thanks a lot.
You’re right 21 Jump Street was a massive failure
Awesome. Over time I’ve grown to like Mr. Hill quite a bit. After watching 21 Jump Street I’m very excited to see Hill in a Tarantino film.
P.S. Since when did Tarantino turn into Stanley Kubrick? Django’s been filming since February!!! 6 month shoots are pretty unheard of. He’s gonna have a tuff time making that Dec. 25th release date.
What began as a promising movie, now sounds like a terrible mess. First Tarantino can’t get Kevin Costner, then to much applause lands Kurt Russell, then cuts Kurt Russell, all the while both Sasha Baron Cohen and Joseph Gordon Levitt drops out as well, right after being officially cast. And now the casting of Hill after the launch of not one but two trailers. Me thinks Will Smith for once made a good choice avoiding this spectacle. This might not be so atypical for a Tarantino production, however he unfortunately no longer has Sally Menke to mend the final product. I still look forward to it though.
Jonah Hill is the luckiest person in hollywood. literally.
You are right, he is both the luckiest and the most overrated.
This is weird: they’ve already released the trailer and Tarantino’s still doing casting? Maybe it’s a tiny role, like the one Mike Myers played in Inglourious Basterds.
Did Hill lose the weight again? He looks great in that picture.
Forster was the bomb in descendants yo! People drop out of django bc they are doing bit parts and are committed to bigger projects. It has nothing to do with the quality of the material ya shmo. Sure these guys want to be in the film but they’re not going to pass up cash on a bigger commitment so they can cameo. Theyre going to try for both.
I like Jonah Hill and hold out hope…but sometimes a well-known face in a small role can pull you right out of a movie. (Luke Wilson in 310 to Yuma comes to mind….or Mike Myers in IB)
@ Jack – My point exactly. I mean why not cast Bobcat Goldwaith while he’s at it.
I wasn’t planning on being told the beginning, middle and end of the movie by reading this post.
jonah was always in this film. don’t let all the news fool you, and don’t be surprised if russell AND costner show up, too.
With the script out there, I think Harvey & Quentin understand the surprises can still come in the form of bit casting. All Jonah had to do, in one interview, was deny he could take the part. Simple as that.
It’s a fanboy’s dream- but maybe Hill, Levitt, Costner, Russell, and Cohen are all in. If Jonah denied it and then appeared, why not?
Leo Decapitated is bad enough, but now this clown? and so many men with so very few women…hmmm, seems like Quentin’s first flop as far as quality goes…next please?(yawn)
Was looking forward to this project until Foxx was cast in it.
