Frank Darabont’s LA Noir continues to gain momentum at TNT. I hear the project, Darabont’s followup to The Walking Dead, is expected to land a series order after TNT brass officially screen it early next month. LA Noir tells the true story of a decades-long conflict between the LAPD, under the determined leadership of Police Chief Parker (Neal McDonough), and ruthless criminal elements led by mobster Mickey Cohen, a one-time boxer who rose to the top of LA’s criminal world.
Additionally, TNT may renew all four series currently on the air. Rizzoli & Isles and freshman Dallas are considered shoe-ins — Rizzoli & Isles is The Closer‘s heir apparent as TNT’s new flagship series, and Dallas is considered a marquee property. Despite a significant dropoff in Week 2, Falling Skies is still the No.1 scripted cable show in adults 18-49. The sci-fi series also anchors TNT’s genre Sunday night and is big internationally, making it even more lucrative for the network, which owns it. That makes a renewal is likely. Franklin & Bash posted an encouraging ratings uptick this week though TNT will probably monitor the dramedy’s performance for another week or two before making a decision. Franklin & Bash star Breckin Meyer just got a renewal for his other series at Turner, TBS comedy Men At Work, which he created and exec produces but doesn’t appear in.

I am looking forward to this one more than any other series greenlit this year. Great news!
it’s spin. desperation. this pilot is doa.
Since you apparently don’t know what the word “spin” means your comment can be safely dismissed. Spin would be laying the groundwork for the announcement that the pilot won’t go forward by making excuses. In other words, the OPPOSITE of what is going on.
TNT — PLEASE PICK UP HARRY’s LAW!
Any word on SCENT OF THE MISSING?
passed over
Reading the book now. So much corruption, but LA still had those who wanted to change the city for the better. This will make a great series!
Does anyone with knowledge about TNT know what’s going on with Castle? They had episodes scheduled to begin in early June but pulled them.
I hope Rizzoli and Isles get’s picked up I love this show!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander are great!!
Neal McDonough is solid. Love watching him.
This series has hit written all over it. I wish Darabont was still making feature films, but this is the next best thing. Bring it on Frank.
Not sure where you’re getting “hit written all over it.” It’s a leap of faith that it will pan out. Period dramas even more expensive than a horror show shot in Atlanta with tax incentives. I see a lot of budget woes for this in the long run. Like someone else wrote, this is not HBO.
Gee, the horror show in Atlanta is doing pretty well, ratings-wise. As for period dramas, that little Hatfield & McCoys minseries did okay for itself, too
People are sick of the same shit on TV, over and over. LA Noir looks like it has the quality to impress viewers, and it’s different enough to get people’s attention.
agreed, people have a fascination with this period, as evidenced by mad men. but where other shows (playboy club, pan am) failed, in that they tried to mimic mad men, this is a police drama at heart, and thats a drama that has withstood the test of time. take that, and the 1950′s, and you got a sure-fire formula for success.
Like Dallas a lot but I think it needs to open up a bit more, they need a couple of more characters with a bit of life in them. So far Josh Henderson and Larry Hagman light up the screen and Patrick Duffy is good as the new Miss Ellie, but more strong characters are needed.
ITA. J.R. and John Ross light up the screen backstabbing everyone else including each other. Christopher’s new wife Rebecca is not so innocent afterall. And now we know Marta (the con woman who impersonates representing for Del Sol) has been popping pills for her bipolar disorder. Watch out for her, she’ll be the female J.R. She secretly taped her own sex tryst with John Ross.
The show already got lots of shady characters.
I agree that the show needs a few more John Ross type characters but I’m fine with the new characters as they are. Rebecca is a bit of a tricky character as she’s starting to become interesting.
What the show needs now is a female bitch type character maybe a more diva type version of Pamela. The alpha-male of JR or something.
Period Pieces are generally a lot harder to execute. Especially on cable look how Starz’s Magic City turned out or broadcast failed fall 2011 Period pieces Pan Am and Playboy Club.
TNT claims to know drama but it stable of so called quality shows that include The Closer, Soutland and Saving Grace. Don’t compare to what dramas on networks HBO , AMC and FX have done to raise the bar.
So excited for L.A. Noir, I’m glad Neal McDonough will be one of the good guys again.
I am really excited about L.A. Noir. Neal McDonough was mesmerizing on season of 3 Justified and was very strong in Band of Brothers, so I hope this series gets picked up.
Falling Skies’ 2nd season is stronger than the 1st. I hope it gets renewed for season 3.
I’ve only seen 2 episodes of Dallas, but I am enjoying it. It’s a good summer drama series. I would like to see more dramas (versus procedurals) on this network.
Scent of The Missing I mean
Not sure about L.A. Noir as I agree period pieces don’t work as series but they should’ve went with the option of turning it into a mini-series like CBS needed to do with Vegas instead of turning it into a series.
Dallas has become a good property for TNT as its doing really well for them and the show is really good. I think where it matters the most for Dallas is going to be the overseas market where TNT will make a lot of money off of it over there.
I don’t have much hope for this series in the long run. Darabont has proved times over that he burns bridges and is too difficult to work with. TV is not his domain as it requires far more collaboration abilities than he possesses. He is best to close himself in a room and write and leave direction and show running to people who can manage a show and get along with others. He is shortlisted as one of those directors that people don’t want to package deals with. I wonder how long it will take for this show implode ala Walking Dead.
TNT is smart to renew “Falling Skies.” Terrific show, smart and talented writing staff, good acting and directing. Fun show all around.
The Walking Dead did not implode. Darabont left, but the show is doing as well as ever. If that’s the future of LA Noir, so be it. I don’t care what happens behind the camera so much as in front of it.
#1 you have NO CLUE what you are talking about.
#2 Frank Darabont fought with AMC to put every possible cent on the screen, in order to deliver the best show possible. AMC was more concerned with making money.
#3 Burnes bridges? Too difficult to work with? Look at everything he’s ever directed, he’s consistently worked with the same actors, department heads, and key personal. Actors asked to be killed off the Walking Dead in response to Franks’s leaving the show. Anyone that has worked with Frank knows how invested, dedicated and collaborative he is. He doesn’t pick fights to be difficult; he stands up for whats right.
#4 Its obvious you believe everything you read on Deadline, but have no idea what you are talking about. Networks are clamoring to be in business with Frank. Which is why LA Noir was picked up to pilot at TNT within a month of Frank leaving the Walking Dead.
#5 Frank Darabont can’t direct?… Ill call AFI and let them know… ha they will be surprised given Shawshank Redemption is one of their top films of all time.
Its great you think he’s a fantastic writer but you shouldn’t weigh in on things you know nothing about, such as his capacity for calibration and LA Noir. Which is a gorgeously written, beautifully executed prestige piece I had the pleasure seeing a few weeks ago.
I hate negativity for the sake of being negative… pile-on elsewhere.
Can’t wait to see “L.A. Noir”. Love Frank Darabont since “The Green Mile” and the cast look promising: Neal McDonough (He was amazing in “Boomtown” and “Justified”), Jon Bernthal (Shane of The Walking Dead), Milo Ventimilia (Peter of Heroes) or Thomas Jane (He was the hero of Darabont’s film, The Mist).
Yeah, period pieces don’t work as series. That Mad Men show is a loser, it won’t last. Who’ll watch a show about ’60s ad men?
Why are people dismissing the notion of a period piece? Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey and Hatfields & McCoys are all hits for their respective channels.
Things don’t work until they do. Who would have ever guessed a zombie show would be AMC’s big hit?
PLEASE PICK UP LA NOIR… I was just thinking its been a while……. I really think this will be Michael Wrights award piece! Come on TNT isn’t your tag line “we know drama”???? Why the hold up??! HUGE mistake if this one gets missed out on!
What is happening with La Noir? I would have thought Frank Darabont would be a sure thing? He’s an amazing, proven success in everything he does! And…HOW FREAKING COOL IS THIS CONCEPT?!!!! Are we going to see this show??
How soon until we know?! It says I nears a series order… that was in June………… Its October!!! Were all holding our breath for LA NOIR!!!!!! Come on TNT!!!!! We want to see some good drama!
