The good news for Lifetime and the producers of their tabloid headline-making movie Liz & Dick is that it has only about a week of filming left. The bad news is that, as the first two and a half weeks of shooting proved, with Lindsay Lohan as the star, a lot could happen in a week that could impact production.
In the last two weeks, filming on the movie was pushed after Lohan crashed her car on her way to the set and when she passed out in her room toward the end of a nightlong shoot. In a tweet, Lohan cited exhaustion “after working 85 hours in 4 days.” When two crew members in the hair department left the production a day later, also claiming exhaustion, Liz & Dick began to attract union attentions. Despite an awkwardly worded statement by SAG-AFTRA today stressing that “we have thoroughly investigated this matter” and “all applicable penalties will be paid,” there have been no violations cited by the actors union yet, and a SAG-AFTRA rep admitted that “we do not have complete information on this yet.” Liz & Dick producer Larry Thompson, a TV movie veteran who is a union signatory and knows their requirements inside and out, acknowledged in a statement that “an AFTRA rep visited us on the set late yesterday afternoon and was TOTALLY fine with everything,” adding that per the union rep, it wasn’t any complaints from AFTRA members but “tweets and comments in the media” that prompted “their curiosity and desire to inquire.”
IATSE, the union that represents stagehands, film technicians and other crafts people, also officially weighed in on the matter tonight. “We have had union representatives on the set since last Friday [June 15] and will continue to monitor the hours and working conditions there,” IATSE said in a statement, though crew members working on Liz & Dick indicated earlier today that they hadn’t been contacted by their union yet to discuss the issue.
Because their budgets are modest, TV movies have far more compressed filming schedules than features do, which does lead to longer days on the set. But Liz & Dick crew members we spoke with disputed the filming hours account in Lohan’s tweet. “Lilo did not work 85 hours in 4 days and we are not averaging 20 hours a day,” one crew member said. “We worked about 70-75 hours in 5 days last week, which isn’t that abnormal for a TV movie. And we’re on set before Lilo and usually wrap long after she’s gone. We could’ve shaved off about 7 or 8 hours that we sat around waiting for Lilo.” There are multiple accounts of Lohan showing up late for work, once refusing to come out of her trailer for 2.5 hours and screaming at the movie’s producers within earshot of the entire crew. Meanwhile, a source close to Lohan said that the troubled actress, who had not worked on a major production in years, “is having a lot harder time than she thought she would,” adding that “the producers aren’t being very supportive and it’s a lot more work than she’s done in a while.”
People close to the production say the work environment on the movie has deteriorated because of a rift between Lohan and Thompson that has resulted in the formation of two camps “that are going at each other.” Lohan was Lifetime’s, not Thompson’s, pick for the role of Elizabeth Taylor, and Thompson didn’t mince words after Lohan’s car accident four days into production which he said left him “petrified.” (BTW, the movie’s insurance policy does not stipulate that Lohan cannot drive while filming as some reports have claimed.)
Meanwhile, despite the setbacks surrounding Lohan, word is that production on Liz & Dick is relatively on schedule. And despite all the controversy, I hear that Lifetime brass largely like what they’ve seen in terms of daily footage. There had been speculation that Lohan’s accent, which “goes in and out,” and other issues may force Lifetime to reloop her dialogue but so far there is no proof of such intentions.
A lot is riding on Liz & Dick for Lohan, who is trying to relaunch her acting career after years of troubles with the law. Lohan’s casting in the Paul Schrader movie The Canyons, which starts production early next month, is said to be contingent on the work ethic she exhibits during the shoot of the Lifetime movie and the recommendation she gets from the Liz & Dick producers.

If you hire Lohan, you have no right to complain. You get what you pay for…
Lohan invents an “overworked” alibi to explain her passing out at her hotel and now has brought down Union heat on her production. Throwing her employers under the bus to save herself embarrassment, now that’s a good way to show Hollywood that you’re ready for a comeback!
Precisely. Unlimited publicity.
I hope this woman can clean up her act or get some help. There are some very cynical people exploiting a person who’s clearly in trouble. I wish someone would shine the light on them.
Who would even hire this loser !! What ever you pay it’s to much.
John Carter has it exactly right. And, since Hollywood is very much taking notice of this shoot (how could they not?), Lohan’s career may well be over.
Forget “Liz & Dick”. Lifetime ought to produce “The Making of ‘Liz & Dick’”. Now THAT would be a movie I’d watch.
Lindsay Lohan not only risks becoming uninsurable, but getting the reputation of bringing down entire movie productions. If you thought the most producers wouldn’t touch her before…
The Making of Liz & Dick. HA! That would be so awesome.
Too bad. She’s talented but needs a complete personality reboot. No one wants to work with an asshole. Production is too hard and at the end of the day no amount of talent is worth the hassle.
I’ll never understand where this default “she’s talented” opinion comes from. Are we basing it on The Parent Trap? Mean Girls, where she was totally overshadowed by Rachel McAdams and Amanda Seyfried? She’s never shown any great acting ability that I’ve seen. And I watched Georgia Rule and Prairie Home Companion.
She was great in Parent Trap– had her parents had an ounce of decency about them and done right by her, she might be a great actress today. It’s hard to really know what would have been possible had she not been treated like a cash cow and gone the way of drugs and crazy off screen behavior.
Agree, she can´t act and she is a trainwreck
I have no reaction to this other than it seems really weird that the crew member kept referring to her as Lilo. I understand it’s a nickname from the press but didn’t think anyone in real life would use it, especially during an anonymous interview
Yeah, that kind of stood out to me. Also, Larry Thompson was the person who choose her for the role, he’s stated that in several interviews – not Lifetime.
Good point. A producer would never, ever lie to the media about a casting decision. They’re always so honest when saying they were forced into casting someone.
this struck me as odd as well.
The anonymous part, makes it MORE likely that they’d use a name that they’d NEVER say on the set. Actors are not called by their first names by crew – or very rarely. That over-familiarity has been bred by the low rent gossip media like E! Hearing those idiots ramble on about “Brad” and “Lindsay” makes me cringe. If a crew member (below the line) went up to Lohan chirping “Lindsay” to her face, their ass would be out the door.
Unfortunately, the general viewing public has picked up this horrible first-name usage.
Um, that’s not true. I’ve worked on productions, below the line for over 20 years and I’ve never heard anyone call an actor anything BUT their first name. What else would you call them?
Exactly.
Not exactly, in all cases.
I also have worked for over twenty years in production, but not with tabloid fodder, for sure. I never heard anyone say “Matthew”, “Ethan”, “Jennifer”, etc. What would you call them? By their last name, with a “Mr” or “Ms” (or whatever) in front.
Exactly. I was someone hoping she’d recover and do well again but sheesh, it’s impossible to keep rooting for this girl she just has no sense of responsibility and no common sense and causes problems wherever you go. Even clean and sober (which she likely isn’t even)…same crazy stories. So clearly it’s not the drugs it’s the personality and immaturity. Sigh.
I don’t understand why OSHA wasn’t called in. I have friends on that crew and the hours they worked was INSANE.. one monday was 22 hours… that’s just INSANE. Apparently the hours the rest of the week weren’t much better.
At that point.. the Dirctor, AD and UPM should have all been fired for not pulling the plug…
Ive been on many film, television and commercial sets as an extra and I can tell you one thing that all of them share; 1st team are treated like royalty. What’s 1st team you ask? First team are the main actors, the stars, the gods. Having a speaking role on a film or tv series guarantees you many amenities on set…like any beverage your belly desires. There is always a willing production assistant/slave who will wipe your ass, tie your shoes and run to the ends of the Earth to get you bottled water. Depending on the caliber of the actor, a production assistant will force a Starbucks Barista at gunpoint to create whatever type coffee you desire. Hydration is never a problem on any set for any star because even when catering sucks or theres no catering and it’s a walk-away lunch, I promise you this, there are enough bottled waters on set to fill Michael Phelp’s olympic-sized swimming pool in his backyard. Yet for some strange reason, with available water galore all throughout Hollywood, we constantly read about dehydrated entertainers with rigorous work schedules. With so many dehydrated, overworked entertainers passing out and nearly dying, maybe the government should get involved because surely, this is a human rights issue. Maybe the Hollywood elite should focus less on saving dogs and adopting african children and begin helping each other because dehydration is pretty damn serious. The causes of dehydration vary. It includes prolonged physical activity with sweating without consuming adequate water, diarrhea, prolonged exposure to dry air, excessive consumption of alcohol and use of methamphetamine, amphetamine and other stimulants. Now, personally, I don’t believe Lindsay drinks excessively or is a drug user. I believe her dehydration is caused by diarrhea combined with trekking through the Mojave Desert without a bottle of gatorade to replenish her electrolytes. *sarcasm alert*
“With so many dehydrated, overworked entertainers passing out and nearly dying, maybe the government should get involved because surely, this is a human rights issue.” Genius.
I love having a part-time extra explain the intricacies of the film business to me.
That’s the kind of unnecessarily snarky, joyless comment that makes me wonder why you even bother reading these articles, working in this business, or really doing anything at all.
Really Habib? Really? THAT’S what you took away from the previous post? Schmuck.
Actually, I’m a part-time UNION extra…and I don’t recall explaining any intracacies of the film business…my post was about dehydration on sets…read it again when your conference call is done with Jerry Bruckheimer. Ciao.
your post was really entertaining at first. you lost me at “hollywood elite.”
It’s called “craft service” – or “crafty” for those who indulge in baby talk.
Totally makes sense that Lohan was Lifetime’s choice, all they want is the publicity, they’re not the ones who actually have to work with her on a daily basis.
The big question is, after she’s had one crash to many, who plays Lindsay in the TV movie of the week about her life?
John Waters, obviously.
There are so, so, so many very talented out-of-work actors in this town — it’s time to cut Lohan loose and give others a shot.
But they have to be FAMOUS first
Appearing in this dreck isn’t going to do sqaut for their careers, though. What happened to the last chick who played Liz on TV?
Id like to think that there are actors/ actresses who are nice people to the crew.
The next time she refuses to come out of her trailer send in two of the biggest meanest toughest strongest guys on the crew and tell them to roughly pick her up and throw her out of the trailer so she lands on her fat lazy butt in front of everyone and make sure to film this happening. Give the two tough guys permission to rip the door to her trailer off its hinges if she’s locked it from inside. You will only have to do this once. She will never miss another call time ever again. To make sure she learns her lesson deduct all the lost time from her salary and give it to the crew let them buy beer with it for the wrap party.
This would be assault and battery.
My husband doesn’t think Lindsay is going to make it to her 30th birthday. I have to agree, and I hate to say that as I don’t wish that for her, but it seems like one of those cases where we’ll see the headline and then say we aren’t surprised.
The producer might have lied to the media that she was prohibited to drive by the insurance policy. Lindsay took a lot of grief for that. Now we are finding out that she was not prohibited from driving. If he did not want to work with her in the first place, then I can see that he is making it as hard as possible for her. Not much of a producer if he acts like that.
Sorry but this doesn’t add up. An unknown source said “Lilo” kept them waiting yet when the woman had a car accident she didn’t go home to rest, she went straight back to the set. No one calls Lindsay Lilo except the media. This is your typical BS from people wanting to put all the blame on Lindsay, and wanting to create drama where there isn’t any.
Whats also contradictory is,they say she kept them waiting yet the movie is on schedule for completion. I think this unkown source is talking BS.
Just wrapped a feature for Lifetime and they are tough shoots. Our leads were amazing but were stressed at times because of the crazy pace. I can’t imagine how tough it would be with a lead with these terrible problems. Gold star to the crew if they are anywhere close to on schedule.
I’m sorry but everything this woman goes near, she ruins. she is toxic i tell ya, toxic. its not over folks, wait until production is complete. then you’re all going to hear some crazy stories. Lohan=Poison
She Went from “It Girl” to “Idiot Girl”.
“Everyone lies.” ~ Gregory House, M.D.
In that picture, Lindsay looks so much like Norah Jones. Maybe they could’ve hired Norah. She was great on “My Blueberry Nights”
Hey, if they had asked me, I would have warned them this would happen, just as I told everyone else in my life.
But they didn’t ask.
“We build people up, so that we can tear them down.”
Brutal.
I hope Lindsay shines in this film. She might have a troubled personal life, but I hope her talent is visible by anyone who watches it. All the best babe.
Her story reminds me so much of Marilyn Monroe’s who also had a reputation of being difficult on sets, an habitually late, emotionally fragile, drug abuser surrounded by co-dependents and enablers. And we all know how that ended.
What I really don’t understand is the great Paul Schrader casting her. Why? Seriously, I’ve seen all the movies that he’s written and/or directed and I’ve gone to see the man speak but the idea of having to watch that girl, with her fake lips and middle-aged-Canoga Park-hooker smoker’s voice, is a turn off.
He cast her opposite a porn star. It’s pretty obvious this isn’t a film that has A/B-list actors begging for roles.
The crew above admits to 14 hour days everday though as not being unusual.
