Now that the Broadway season has ended with the Tony Awards, it’s time to think about what’s next. Broadway has embraced movie stars who turn shows into events in limited runs; how about taking a page from Hollywood and going the brand route? Producer Dianne Fraser has acquired stage rights to Gilligan’s Island: The Musical, and she plans to launch the show on Broadway, banking on the idea that the audience for the iconic TV show will want to see the characters brought to the stage.
It’s based on the classic 1960s series with a book that was written by series creator Sherwood Schwartz and his son Lloyd, with a score by Schwartz’s daughter Hope and her husband Laurence Juber, a guitarist-composer. Schwartz, who also created The Brady Bunch, passed away last year, but not before the show was road-tested in small theaters across the country. It’s very similar to the format of the original show, with Gilligan, the Skipper, The Howells, Ginger, Maryanne and the Professor stranded on an island. They’ve added another character: an alien.
Fraser, a longtime partner at Industry who was a producer of the Chicago-based show Working last year, said she was approached by the Schwartz clan and signed on with plans to bring the show to Broadway for 2013 or 2014. That’s all predicated on getting investors to climb aboard. “I’ve known the Schwartz family for many years, and for Sherwood, who died last July, it was his lifelong dream to take the show to New York,” she told me. “It’s not intentionally campy, it’s funny in a broad way and very true to the show. It’s amazing how even kids know about it because they’ve seen it on Nick at Nite. It’s still Gilligan, the bumbling sidekick to the professor, saving the world. And yes, it’s all seven characters, plus an alien. The songs are very commercial.” She said they are working with Tony-nominated general manager Tom Smedes and they are looking to next land a director. “It’s the type of show where you can stunt cast with movie stars to play the Howells, Ginger, even the Professor,” she said. “Maybe an American Idol contestant to play Gilligan, to open up the show.”

Not a big fan of this idea.
If you are going to do this, why not use a show with more potential development and audience appeal…especially in to today’s economic landscape…the feel good musical…The Beverly Hillbillies.
I actually agree with you. The Beverly Hillbillies was a funnier show and could work better than Gilligan. But I think it all depends on who the cast is .Jackie Hoffman would be great as Granny .The producers of Xanadu would be a good fit
It’s the greatest idea for a show in the history of Broadway.
Now all we need are investors lots of investors. I have a plan to sell 350 shares each investor only has to put in $250,000 and we’ll all get rich. Sherwood approved this plan himself before he passed away he told me he has full confidence in my financial acumen.
They do realize no one under the age of 40 has any idea what Gilligan’s Island is, don’t they?
In case you did not read the entire article or have forgotten, Dianne Fraser was quoted as saying, “It’s amazing how even kids know about it [Gilligan's Island] because they’ve seen it on Nick at Night”.
It’s about time to sit right back and hear this tale.
This is the best idea I have seen in a long time. Can’t wait!
An alien? Classic buzz-killing punchline!
But the great Wazoo is invisible to all but children (there are none) and idiots (namely Gilligan and the Skipper) – oh, and the audience.
Someone’s been watching too much Smash.
LOL. This confirms that there is no imagination or talent left on either the east or west coast. Thank God for “flyover country.”
Broadway is desperate for a hit. But I’d put this more in the catagory of “Jerry Springer – The Opera”, Evil Dead or Carrie. It might get to Off-broadway, and that’s about it.
That is NOT the real Ginger in that picture! It’s Judith Baldwin who did the reunion movies.
the play should take place on a mysterious island, where the castaways encounter smoke monsters, ghosts and time travel. yeah, that’d great!!!!
Look at how long “The Addams Family” ran; it’s toured as well. And why? I submit : the theme music. The theme from “G.I.” is one of the campiest and most memorable theme songs ever. They added “the Professor and Mary Ann” when their credits were added to the opening when it went from black and white to color – a joke in and of itself! Suddenly they mattered on the island!
I saw this in previews several years ago in Thousand Oaks and let me tell you it was a disaster (although Lee Meriwether was a delight as Mrs. Howell). The book was a mess, the songs were forgettable, and the whole affair was played straight for some reason. Not a laugh in the whole show, either real or ironic. This production deserves to remain lost at sea.
The Great White Way is turning into Hollywood. No more creativity or origninal ideas: just turning crap TV shows and movies into plays in hopes of making a buck. So, so sad.
I love this idea – GILLIGAN will be the ultimate “feel good” musical! It’s worth noting that Gilligan is the Skipper’s (not the Professor’s) sidekick.
I saw GILLIGAN’S ISLAND: THE MUSICAL several years ago when it played Sacramento. I laughed out loud A LOT; in fact, I’ve never enjoyed myself more in a stage production. I think this would attract the kind of person who doesn’t normally go to the theater and hopefully also bring in an audience of those who want something familiar, yet different.
I’d see it if they can get Keanu as Gilligan, Brian Cox as the Skipper, Christina Hendricks as Ginger, Katie Holmes as Maryanne, Jamie Foxx as the Professor, and they make Thurston and Lovey a gay couple played by Richard Lewis and Elliott Gould.
As for an alien? WTF? No. Not gonna see if if there’s an alien in it.
Even though Jerry Springer: the Opera is based on hideous source material, it’s an extremely good show. Definitely not a failed one that might get to Off-, and that’s it.
It spent some years on the West End, London’s equivalent to Broadway. I saw it a year or two after its premiere, and the house was still packed.
I saw the production in Hollywood a couple years ago. It was a hoot, from stem to stern. Great songs, fun for the actors and audience. It should translate well to Broadway.
Saw this in Florida a few years ago with my then 8 or 9 year old daughter, who had never seen Gilligan’s Island at that point. We both loved it! Dawn Wells and Barry Williams played Mr. and Mrs. Howell. We laughed until we had tears. It was quite enjoyable, and the audience seemed to be having as much fun as the cast. The alien bit was actually really fun, and we still sing lines from the show to each other at totally random moments. Hope it does well on Broadway.
Lifelong dream to take “Gilligan’s Island” to broadway . Really?
