EXCLUSIVE: After two years at WME, Peter Chernin’s production company has left the agency, which represented its TV division. WME represented former NBC executive Katherine Pope in her deal to become Chernin Entertainment’s president of television and took in the production company as a TV client in April 2010. For its three years of existence, Chernin Entertainment has been prolific, helped by big production commitments built into Chernin’s exit package from News Corp. The company has three series on the fall schedule – New Girl, Touch and new comedy Ben & Kate, all on Fox. A representative for Chernin Entertainment confirmed that the company and WME have parted ways. “We wish them well,” the rep said.

oh boy another fight ?? how could this happen in this wonderful business
humm how odd?
Wow… Greenburg’s not pulling his weight. Would love to hear the spin…
Someone else realized that WME have lost focus?
Good move, now WME will work harder for you.
Chernin wished WME well? That’s cool. I hope it wasn’t a typo. It’s the ultimate snipe.
Chernin should go to CAA, they need him. WME didn’t need another producer client.
that’s great! i wish WME nothing but pain and suffering. especially the passive aggressive drama-creating dickwad agent who hides behind attorneys that i’m dealing with. pain and suffering. i’m a lighting a candle now.
I sense that ICM Partners is making its move.
ah yes, nice to hear the old ‘we wish them well.’ a classic!
Hoping somebody gets fired over this…
Or is Ari just gonna hand out more Monopoly money?
When does Spielberg leave? He’s become a one- season wonder under their people.
Is Chernin really enjoying himself making these horrible, pointless and so far unprofitable series? Particularly after the creative and business humiliation of Terra Nova you’d think he’d get tired of not being a mogul anymore but at least now he can get a bunch of agencies to breathlessly pitch him on a vision for his company. Lord knows his clueless execs don’t have one.
In my 20 years in this biz, I’ve never heard anyone wish a major agency well. It’s a great slam, but it can’t hide the fact that Chernin wouldn’t have anything on the air were it not for those commitments. Why is Katherine Pope so highly regarded? When she was at NBC she developed one crappy show after another. When her rich contract is up, I wonder who will be wishing whom well.
Sadly WME is a twisted culture. It lives to represent a handful of showrunners and a few talented directors. The rest of the place is just out of control. The pecking order is clear much like CAA. It’s a nasty corporate culture.
Frankly now that ICM has to start over with some super smart people it makes me wonder if that will (in time) be a better place to be represented. Versus the WME, UTA, CAA daily b.s. we all suffer through. Personal attention and treating all clients equally has never hurt an agency.
The big production companies really do not need representing. The whole exercise is counter-productive. Chernin Ent will now get the pick of the talent crop this year as every agency will be after them to represent them. Well done Chernin! hopefully it has finally sunk in that if a major production company is represented by one of the big four agencies none of the other agencies will bother to recommend clients to that production company as they will not have ‘the package’. The agency may be able to share the package but not a lot of sharing goes on in this town!
Pity the poor clients who do not realize that they are not being put forward by their agency if their agency does not represent the production company.
Clearly, they have exhausted all the writer options at WME and want to be agentless so that they are offered the cream of the crop from the other agencies vying for their business. Smart move, Chernin!
Ok, so stupid question, but why do production companies need representation from agencies? I was under the impression that agencies negotiate with production companies to get their talent on board.
What purpose is served by a PC being repped at an agency?
