Don Grady, best remembered as Robbie Douglas from My Three Sons and as one of The Mickey Mouse Club‘s original Mouseketeers, died today after battling cancer, according to his family. He was 68
. The San Diego native was 13 years old when he became a Mouseketeer in The Mickey Mouse Club. He went on to appear in several TV Westerns including Wagon Train, The Rifleman, Have Gun Will Travel and Dick Powell’s Zane Grey Theater. His biggest success came in 1960 when he was cast as middle son Robbie Douglas on the long-running TV show My Three Sons, starring Fred MacMurray, William Frawley and William Demarest. When the series ended in 1972, Grady pursued a career in his lifelong love, music, recording an album of his own material on the Elektra label titled Homegrown. Grady also starred in a national tour in Pippin, and had roles in the stage productions of Godspell and Damn Yankees.

RIP- so sad……
I was so sorry when I heard this news, I watched My Three Sons for years growing up. We`re losing a lot of good people lately. I really feel bad when people make mistakes about the person that they`re writing about. Don Grady Did Not play Robbie Douglas as the middle son. Chip was the middle son, Ernie was the youngest & Robbie was the Oldest. Hopefully this oversight can be corrected,
Thank You
Actually Robbie was originally the middle son, when Tim Considine played Mike from 1960 to 1965 he was the oldest then Robbie and Chip was the youngest. Considine was only in the black and white episodes when the show went to CBS and into color Tim left the show along with Bill Frawley and they brought in Bill Demarest.
It was my understanding that Bill Frawley passed away during the run of the show & was then replaced by Bill Demarest.
I knew they got it wrong he was the oldest son, I always thought he was so cute
Actually they didn’t get it wrong. Most folks just do not remember the days when the oldest brother was on the show and left, making Grady’s character the oldest son and adding the other son by adoption.
Mike was the oldest. Robbie was after him, then Chip and Ernie.
When the show began Robbie Douglas WAS the middle son. Tim Constantine was the oldest and Chip the youngest. Ernie was adopted and when Tim left the show then Robbie was the oldest. So the article was correct.
actually robbie was the middle son. He only became the eldest once Mike , the original eldest left once his character got married.
any true fan of the show will know that. the original series was in b/w and don grady played the middle son. When Ernie got adopted thats when Robbie became to be the eldest son.
He started off as the Middle son, the oldest was Mike who went off to college, then Steve adopted Ernie. Mike was written off the show.
An extraordinarily talented and kind man. RIP, Don. Miss you, buddy.
Condolences on the loss of your friend.
R.I.P. I spent many nights watching that back in the 1960s.
It might be fashionable to disdain such programs today, but there was an episode that’s stuck in my mind for decades now.
One of the boys wanted to be in a rock band. Dad took the kid to see a local group of kids who had formed a band. The leader of the band pointed out all the mistakes his players had just made in rehearsal (like, “He played E-flat instead of …” and “He was off half a beat”). Dad asked his son if he had noticed any of that. He admitted he didn’t. Dad told him that was the kind of dedication he needed to cultivate to be in a band and was he really prepared to do all that hard work? The son admitted he wasn’t.
And THAT is why some programs are actually *immortal*. THAT. Not flinging insults around as “comedy.” THAT.
Thanks for the memory, Mike. As a kid I loved the old reruns of My Three Sons, and I still love them today for all the reasons you have mentioned. And yes, that’s why some shows become immortal and appeal to all generations, and why some (most) don’t.
Good points! I watched this show as a litte gorl with a crush on Robbie.
God rest him
Don also sang the 60′s hit “Yellow Balloon” by the Yellow Balloon besides being a talented composer.
Actually Don sang and wrote many of The Yellow Balloon songs, but the main hit was sung by Alex. Don was very talented musically and a great all around guy. His passing is at too young of an age, and it must be a tremendous loss to his family. R.I.P. my brother.
Gary Zeekly the writer producer of the song always said Don sang it!!
Don was a great man and a great friend. I have had the pleasure of working with him on several projects and have become close with both him and his family. He will be greatly missed.
My Three Sons was a television show that was great entertainment. Don Grady role as the oldest brother was an inspiration for other brothers to watch. His cleancut image on My Three Sons is something we do not see these days on television.
Condolences on the loss of your good friend.
My condolences to you on the loss of your friend. We lost “Robby” we knew as children watching TV. You lost Don. My sincerest sympathies.
He and I were about the same age. I remember relating so much to his storylines. Gone too soon.
RIP Don Grady. I loved My 3 Sons when I was a little kid. Had a massive crush on him as he was such a cutie. Sad day.
So sad to hear that. At least he is with his sister now. Lani O’ Grady played Mary Bradford on “Eight Is Enough”.
Condolences to Don’s family and may he rest in peace.
Thank you for mentioning that Lani O’Grady was his sister. Don was my favorite on My Three Sons and Lani played my favorite character on Eight is Enough – both of them were so very talented…
So very sad. I used to watch that show every week with my folks and brothers. He seemed a genuinely nice person too.
RIP.
RIP, I watched him in My Three Sons and enjoyed his work.
I was really just a small child when My Three Sons was on, but I remember this handsome guy very well. RIP, he was just too young to go.
This makes me feel a little older. Don has always seemed the most youthful of the four sons from the show – aged very gracefully and was still instantly recognizable, even in recent years. He always came across very well when interviewed about the show (but so did the entire cast – seems like a nice group).
My Three Sons….. A part of my life. Robbie was the dream, in any color. RIP Don gone too soon.
R.I.P. Don!!!! I watched you from the very beginning; the Mickey Mouse Club & then My Three Sons. Even my daughter grew up watching your reruns. We still watch you today and every morning on the WE TV Channel in our area. You’ll never be forgotten DON (ROBBIE).
Very sad to hear of his illness and death. God Bless him and his family.
My Three Sons was a wonderfully wholesome television series, good clean entertainment, the likes of which we will now only see in reruns; today’s television will never come close with what stands for comedy now.
R.I.P Don Grady, I’m 19 years old and I watch My three sons a lot.
After all these years how wonderful he’s thought of in such a positive way, indeed he was loved by his fans. RIP Robbie, you were a great guy !
It was a pleasure getting to meet and see your band “Boomer”. I am glad I got to meet you as you made me an Honorary Mouseketeer during the Disneyland Show days. Ginny we are so sorry for your loss. Our condolences to you and your family and Don’s.
You are in a better place sharing your music to everyone above.
Such a shame, when one of the Douglas boys pass away. And he was Italian, too-his family changed their name to be “safer” Also, his sister was Lani O’Grady from Eight is Enough-yes, she added an O’ to make it even “safer”!
Abd, btw, that story about the band may have started him and his friends into performing on the show-remember that one song they always sang-”I’ll be a Good Man to Have Around the House”!
RIP Brother Robbie!
R.I.P. Don – Never missed a show – It was how our lives were then. Times change but today’s parents would do well to see these shows, teach their kids the values we held. As kids, we made mistakes, were taken to task but we had morals, family and fun. Parents were parents, not pals or buddies.
God bless you for the laughs, the life lessons. My condolences to his wife and children.
RIP, Grew up on the show and I truly enjoy watching it now on ME TV. Brings me back to a simpler time in life.
We will truly miss you Robbie. The show was very clean. We don’t see that much anymore. Thanks for the memoies. We all will miss you. RIP.
Young Michael Landon on “Bonanza” and Don Grady were my first boy crushes. RIP Robbie.
Now he is with his sister, Lani (Eight is Enough).
So very sorry to hear this news.Condolences to his Family.Yes, ,My Three Sons were watched with very fond memories of my childhood. My two brothers and I watched the program all the time and the reruns for years.RIP Don “Robbie” Grady.
