Character actress Kathryn Joosten, who played the snoop Karen McCluskey on Desperate Housewives and the president’s secretary on The West Wing, died today in Los Angeles after battling lung cancer for years. She was 72. She won two Emmys for the Desperate Housewives role. Her character also battled cancer and passed away in the series finale in May. In addition to her other major role as Mrs. Landingham on The West Wing, she had a recurring gig in Dharma & Greg and guest starred in Ally McBeal, Scrubs and My Name Is Earl. Joosten, who had a career as a psychiatric nurse before turning to acting, was also active in animal rights causes.
Additionally Joosten served as a Governor for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences Performers Peer Group. She completed two terms and was in her third at the time of her death. In his condolences statement TV Academy COO Alan Perris said she was “an exceptional representative of the performers peer group and spirited contributor to our organization. She will be missed.” A lengthy interview Joosten did with TV Academy Foundation’s Archive of American Television will be posted Monday, June 4th, at EmmyTVLegends.org.

Kathryn was great on Even Stevens in the episode “Stevens Manor”…she will be missed. RIP Kathryn!
She was my co-governor representing performers at ATAS, and a good friend. Heaven just got a little feistier! I love you, Joosten!
RIP, Kathryn. You were an original and will be sorely missed.
What a great lady. I really enjoyed her work on The West Wing and Desperate Housewives. Always a class act.
Never met her, but always found there to be such depth to her characters and, to me, that speaks to a depth of soul.
Thank you, and God’s speed, yo.
How sad. Such a watchable and likeable actress. She was terrific on both West Wing and Housewives.
I loved her work. She always made me laugh. Her talent will be missed. Condolences to her family.
Her death on Scrubs was one of the saddest moments on TV, and also on West Wing.
I worked with Kathryn on several shows and adored her. One of my favorite people. She was always a pleasure to be around. My thoughts and condolences to her family. She will be missed.
I worked with Kathy. She was a sweetheart and made me feel at home on set. She must have invited me to come over for dinner or stay at her vacation home every time I saw her. Kathy went out of her way to make me feel loke part of a family- checking in, offering advice and just being jovial. It was truly a pleasure to work with her and to have been introduced to such a funny, humble and sincere woman. RIP.
She was such a good actor in that show Desperate Housewives. She was a good person in the show too by taking the blame for carlos murdering that one person and the other lady i forgot her name , seen burying him
Oh no! She was such a warm actress in Scrubs, and I liked her in Curb Your Enthusiasm. =( RIP Mrs. Joosten.
RIP Kathryn. Her death on West Wing was probably the saddest moment on that great series. I have read that after being killed off she made Marc Cherry promise he would never do the same when she was cast on Desparate Housewives, which had happened to so many DW characters. He “kept” his word for she didn’t die until the finale. Who knew that happened on TV would happen in real live so soon.
Loved your work and will miss you.
Let’s not forget her in The West Wing. Rest in Peace
Thank you for sharing your talent with us. It was great.
Good Night, sweet. Woman
She was a wonderful actress, I’m really sad to hear this news, she will certainly be missed and never bettered.
I was honored to play her sister on Malcolm in the Middle another series she had a recurring role on and to serve under her on the Executive Committee of the Performers Peer Group of ATAS of which she was one of the Governors. Kathy was a wonderful feisty lady who always spoke her mind and it was a privilege to know her.
great lady.
I worked with her multiple times and she went out of her way to make me feel at home on the set. She helped me join the TV academy as she wanted more working actors voting on performances of our peers. She was gracious, smart, suffered no fools, and kind. She loved her fellow actors and her union and I was honored to know her. Thoughts with her family. She was loved and i hope they take comfort in that.
As a member of the upper half of the 18-to-49 demo, I take heart in reading that she didn’t start acting until she was 42. Joosten is proof that you can have more than one career in life — something too easily forgotten when you work in this town, or any town.
My mom went to nursing school with her. Said that she was very funny.
RIP Kathy.
GREAT ACTRESS!!! Tragic loss. First saw her on an episode of ARLI$$, would later see her on WEST WING and small film called THE TV SET
Im really sorry to hear about Kathryn’s passing. As a writer who is starting out in LA, after having raised a family, I am inspired by her turn toward acting in her 40s and the success she found at that point. She is an inspiration to me as a woman that life isn’t over at 40!
Rest well, Kathryn.
“Mrs. Landingham! What’s next?” – Immortal words on television that wouldn’t have been possible without her.
