EXCLUSIVE: Rob Zombie will write, direct and produce Broad Street Bullies, a film about the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team that evolved from a cellar-dwelling expansion team into a team that racked up victories and penalty minutes in equal measure during the 1970s. Zombie, known for his head-banging music before transitioning to genre films like House Of 1000 Corpses and Halloween, is making a departure with this film, sort of, because the Flyers’ brutal style of play is genre-worthy and has the makings for a hockey film on the order of the 1977 sports film classic Slap Shot.
The physical play of the Flyers was legendary, to the point that when they played the Soviet Union’s supposedly invincible and tough Red Army team, the Flyers roughed them up so badly that the Russian team left the ice in the first period, and only returned when told they would not get paid if they didn’t. The Flyers won the game 4-1, with head coach Fred Shero proclaiming, “Yes we are world champions. If they had won, they would have been world champions. We beat the hell out of a machine.” Despite being known as Freddy’s Philistines because of the work of enforcers like Dave Schultz, the Flyers had skilled players like Bobby Clarke and won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in two-fisted fashion. Their exploits were captured in the HBO docu Broad Street Bullies.
Zombie got the rights to the team’s story and has the full support of the Flyers organization. He likened the tone of the tale to Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice. “Each character involved is more outrageous than the next,” Zombie said. “The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale.”
Former Flyers great and team senior vice president Clarke is appropriately stoked. “The great Rob Zombie making a drama feature film about the Broad Street Bullies is exciting and thrilling for all of us! I look forward to seeing it.”
Zombie will produce with Andy Gould, Les Borsai and Jeremy Platt. They are tying down the financing and hope to drop the puck on this one shortly. Zombie is in post-production on his genre film The Lords Of Salem, which is produced by Haunted Movies, the partnership between Paranormal Activity’s Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli along with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik.

Rob Zombie + Broad Street Bullies! Count me in
The sort of out of the box idea that either works or doesn’t. My money is on this works.
The HBO 24/7 doc on the Philly Flyers Bullies was pretty great
Hmm. GOON bombs and now this. Good luck pal.
GOON was awesome.
Really don’t see how Goon “bombing” has anything to do with Broad Street Bullies. Goon and this movie don’t have a lot in common besides the element of hockey. This is based on a true story, with real NHL teams. Goon was a fake minor league hockey team – with a pretty weak story. Have you seen the HBO doc? It’s extremely compelling. Besides that, Goon had a very limited release – under 250 screens. So, check yourself Bigjohn you got haterade running down your chin.
Atta Boy Datdoo! You called that one right! Hit the nail right on the head! Shot ….. SCORRRRRRRE!!!
“Goon was a fake minor league hockey team”…. ****bzzztttt****
Are you serious?? The movie was based off of Doug Smith and his time in the ECHL & AHL…. It was all very, very real, including the final fight. Sure, the fight in the movie was over-exaggerated compared to the actual fight, but c’mon… this is the movies.
Go to youtube and lookup Doug Smith hockey fights… that kid was no joke.
Goon should earn out. It was a premium vod release so marketing costs were kept in check and it did 4milUSD at box office on 250 screens. I imagine it crushed it on VOD and it shouldn’t have been produced for anything more than 5USD. Ohhh and it was a great film also.
Goon bombed? How? It was a box office success in the foreign market before it was released in the U.S., it made millions from VOD and even though it’s already been released on DVD in the U.S., it’s still opening in more and more theaters across the country every week. It’s called a Cult Movie. In fact, it’s a great movie that picks up more fans everyday. Goon is the sleeper hit of 2012 and destined to be a cult classic along side Slap Shot. Pay attention sometime. It can be fun.
That sound you hear is Kevin Smith trying to light a joint while crying.
at 420 no less
Expect Zombie to inject needless rape and the use of the word “motherfucker” throughout. It’s the only thing he knows.
Sounds like you really know what you’re talking about….is there such a thing as “necessary rape,” by the way?
You’ve obviously never watched a Rob Zombie movie…
They are also making a Penguins movie……to be shown on LOGO
That’s possibly the greatest comment ever posted to this website. (Tips cap to Flyers 24/7)
The best post in the history of DH
I also hear Lifetime is making a movie about The Sedin Sisters.
The Flyers deserve a better filmmaker than Rob Zombie… If u can even call him that.
Disagree. Should be thrilled to have him and they sound like they are
no way!
I’m a huge hockey fan, anybody but zombie please. seriously. give tyler perry the mofo.
The Flyers deserve nothing with the way the BS Bullies were a disgrace to the game. Breaking someone’s ankle or sucker punching them from behind is not hockey or something to be glorified. Like Reggie Dunlop said ” Old Time hockey like Toe Blake, Dip Clapper or Eddie Shore.” Its said that the term old time hockey has been perverted because of the BS Bullies
let’s sum this up:
Sorry your team wasn’t cool or interesting enough to make a movie about…nuff said!!!
“flyers deserve nothing” said the pens fan
haha, the flyers dont deserve anything? they changed the game of hockey back then, they showed people they would do anything to bring that cup to philly, and look fighting for it, becoming the broad street bullies showed everyone what the Flyers were made of, back to back years
Eddie Shore slahed a man in the back of the head, ending his career and almost killing the guy. Pure grace of Old Time Hockey, huh?
I always think it’s funny when people who don’t know the history of hockey say that the Bullies destroyed hockey. The Flyers were a weak team that got “bullied” year after year when they first came into the league. They got their asses handed to them physically on a consistent basis. Then Mr. Snider (Flyers owner) got tired of it and decided to build a team that could compete in the same type of game as the teams that were killing them game after game. Everyone got mad because the Flyers beat them at their own game instead of just rolling over. The Flyers didn’t do anything that every other team was doing in the NHL in the 70′s…they just did it better.
Penguins on Logo?? Come now. Nickelodeon Jr.
Loved his Amdro ant poison spots too!
Please no.
soooooo cant wait to see it !!!!!!!!!!
Goon was a GREAT movie
If only…. it had the cast… just not the script or direction.
This!
Everything RZ does has that dirty 70s feel to it. This is a perfect project for him.
The Flyers were superstitious they believed along with the fans that they needed Kate Smith singing God Bless America before the game in place of the National Anthem to win. They never lost when Kate sang.
Flyers fans have to bash the Penguins because they haven’t won a cup since the 70′s. Still might be a decent movie. Great move on the Carter/Richards trades by the way those guys definitely weren’t winners.
A real hockey fan would understand those WERE great trades. Flyers got a great haul in young talent. You honestly think they could have won a cup with Carter and Richards? There was no pressure for them in LA and they weren’t the stars responsible for the win. Here, they would have been counted on and they’ve shown they aren’t up to that.
Ya the movie shows teams who have wins the cup since 1975…. Oops I guess the flyers won’t be in it!!! HahHaha.
It’s always 1975 in Philadelphia …
They’re too many examples of movies that were great and didn’t make a lot of $.. So let’s not go there… Zombie would be great for this project.. Completely outside the box, raw, unothodox.. Just like the broad street bullies.. This has great potential!!! an the fact that Flyers org is supporting this makes it so much more exciting!!! Yyyeeeaaabhhhh!!
Doesn’t surprise me a bit that Rob would go this route. He’s been a HUGE hockey fan for years.
I think this may be the first time I’ve seen a sports debate happen on deadline. Excellent.
The Broad Street Bullies doc was excellent if you’re any kind of sports fan at all. Zombie has a chance to make a damn good movie.
It is always 1975 in Philly! love that.
How will Zombie shoehorn his wife and her obligatory crying scene into this kind of film?
Tyler Perry? Are you serious? Zombie is such a better choicr
O look a jealous penguin fan found his way to the page
Actually Goon was based on a true story as well about Doug Smith an amature boxer turned amature hockey player and enforcer. Sure alot ofthe stuff was over the top and might not relate directly back to Smith’s story exactly but it followed the same outline. The movie was well done and create alot of hype in the hockey community so for those calling it a flop my thoughts are you might be alittle out of the ” hockey loop.” and the other thing the broad street bullies documentary wasnt part of the 24/7 series. Theres a few people who need to brush up on their hockey pop culture knowledge
