EXCLUSIVE: Rob Zombie will write, direct and produce Broad Street Bullies, a film about the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team that evolved from a cellar-dwelling expansion team into a team that racked up victories and penalty minutes in equal measure during the 1970s. Zombie, known for his head-banging music before transitioning to genre films like House Of 1000 Corpses and Halloween, is making a departure with this film, sort of, because the Flyers’ brutal style of play is genre-worthy and has the makings for a hockey film on the order of the 1977 sports film classic Slap Shot.
The physical play of the Flyers was legendary, to the point that when they played the Soviet Union’s supposedly invincible and tough Red Army team, the Flyers roughed them up so badly that the Russian team left the ice in the first period, and only returned when told they would not get paid if they didn’t. The Flyers won the game 4-1, with head coach Fred Shero proclaiming, “Yes we are world champions. If they had won, they would have been world champions. We beat the hell out of a machine.” Despite being known as Freddy’s Philistines because of the work of enforcers like Dave Schultz, the Flyers had skilled players like Bobby Clarke and won back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in two-fisted fashion. Their exploits were captured in the HBO docu Broad Street Bullies.
Zombie got the rights to the team’s story and has the full support of the Flyers organization. He likened the tone of the tale to Rocky meets Boogie Nights on ice. “Each character involved is more outrageous than the next,” Zombie said. “The backdrop of the turbulent year of 1974 is perfect for this ‘stranger than fiction’ sports tale.”
Former Flyers great and team senior vice president Clarke is appropriately stoked. “The great Rob Zombie making a drama feature film about the Broad Street Bullies is exciting and thrilling for all of us! I look forward to seeing it.”
Zombie will produce with Andy Gould, Les Borsai and Jeremy Platt. They are tying down the financing and hope to drop the puck on this one shortly. Zombie is in post-production on his genre film The Lords Of Salem, which is produced by Haunted Movies, the partnership between Paranormal Activity’s Jason Blum, Steven Schneider and Oren Peli along with Brian Kavanaugh-Jones of Automatik.

Who’s going to play Schultz?
I hate the flyers..but that documentary on hbo was really good! Haven’t seen goon yet, but i hope this new film is nothing like any of the slapshot sequels
Do your research on goon before you say its fake buddy because this comment you just made makes you look stupid
Real hockey fans who are actors should be in this movie…..Boreanaz, Leary, Thicke, Perry, etc. Especially Boreanaz since he is a Flyers fan.
GOON hasn’t even finished its initial DVD/BlueRay offering, and it has already made a solid profit, and was given a huge thumbs up by the hockey community. Not sure how you are defining “bomb” but GOON doesn’t really fit the bill.
Is that number 23 ilka sinisalo?
A great subject. Philly hadn’t had a wining club at that point in, like, forever. It was off the charts and out of control for the whole town. Zombie? Not feelin’ it but maybe… Professional sports probably changed permanently after that first Stanley Cup (and not for the better.) Who knew that winning at any cost might leave your husband with early Alzheimer’s?
Christian, if you really knew hockey you’d know that “ankle breaking and sucker punching” was already happening in the game. The Flyers received it their first year in the NHL and decided to give it back. The reason they’re remembered for it is they earned NHL’s ultimate prize faster than any other expansion team and used the same type of tactics that Mr Hockey Gordie Howe used to get there.
Eddie Shore? Know what you’re talking about Pens Fan! The guy ended Ace Bailey’s career then plays in his benefit game…Real dirty! Old time hockey like a Gordie Howe elbow right? Fool the Broad Street Bullies were legendary!!!
Christian T, you can’t deny that the mid 70′s flyers team was unstoppable. Many people forget that while they were tough, they had a ton of talent as well. Reggie Leach, Bobby Clarke, Bill Barber, Bill Clement, Rick Macleash, the list goes on.. Oh and Bernie Parent who if not for him being partially blinded, the Flyers would have won AT LEAST a 3rd straight cup. Oh and their heavyweight Dave Schultz held his own in the goal scoring dept as well. It was a combination of the talent, brawn, and goaltending that made that team so good. ALL sports evolve just like hockey did. The 70′s flyers were just ahead of the curve.
Anyway, if Rob Zombie ever wanted to make a sports movie, I can’t think of a better fit than The Bullies. He seems to gravitate towards the 70′s feel in his movies alot ie: 1000 corpses, Devils Rejects (great flick), Chainsaw Massacre remake ect.. I’m psyched to see it and hopefully it can open the eyes of some people to the NHL
Goon was a great fucking movie. I bought it and watched it at least thirty times. Fuck you haters and fuck the penguins
GO FLYERS
!!!!!!
GO PHILLY!!!!!!!!
Goon was based on a true story, the character Doug”the thug” Glatt played by Sean William scott, was portraying The life of Dave “the hammer ” Smith
Zombie is a great film maker u dumb fuck…1000 cor…dev rejec…both myers…all killer flicks….
The fact that a Bruins fan is making a movie about the Bullies should tell you enough. RESPECT THE ORANGE N BLACK
