The expected news came this morning, one day after Ann Curry’s tearful goodbye on Today. Savannah Guthrie‘s upgrade is effective immediately, putting her on the NBC morning show’s anchor team of Matt Lauer, Al Roker, Natalie Morales. The group’s first official show together is July 9. “In just a few short years Savannah has become a standout member of the news division as well as the ultimate team player”, NBC News president Steve Capus said in the release today. “She’s anchored for Brian on NBC Nightly News, moderated for David on Meet The Press, co-hosted the 9 a.m. hour of Today, reported for Rock Center and Dateline, and provided legal insights in our Supreme Court Special Reports – and that was all within the last week! She’s got an undeniable range, and she’s earned the trust of the news community, her colleagues and our viewers alike”. Guthrie joined Today in June 2011 as co-host of the third hour and chief legal correspondent. She had been NBC News White House Correspondent from December 2008 to June 2011 and served as co-host of MSNBC’s The Daily Rundown from January 2010 to June 2011. She came to NBC from CourtTV.

Too bad for Ann Curry. She did a wonderful job all the years she was there and was very under appreciated by NBC. They are showing just how stupid they have become. This on top of all the really stupid programming!! I believe their domination is over!! They soon get to see what its like looking up from the bottom!!
No offense to Savannah Guthrie, but Ann Curry has 1,200,000+ followers on Twitter compared to the former’s 65,000.
And it’s not like Savannah has not been featured prominently in all of NBC’s news shows.
I don’t think this is going to be the bump they’re hoping for. I think The Today Show lost it’s crown for other reasons than Ann Curry and it ain’t coming back any time soon.
Just because NBC say’s she’s all those things doesn’t make it so. She’s just awful, I don’t think she’s got any chemistry with the others, Natalie is much more affable.
Ann was a class act. I used to like Matt, but wont be watching anymore with this new cast.

Savannah is a boring version of Natalie Morales. So…why didn’t they just give the job to Natalie?? She has been there a long time and paid her dues. She is also stunning and adorable.

As many others have noted, Savannah has a very, very annoying voice that is grating. Good luck to her. We’ll see if the numbers pick up, or if GMA finally starts a winning streak it hasn’t seen in years.
I just found this thread, after watching the story on the news about Savannah getting the new co-host job. I am not trying to make fun of her, but her voice and presence just perfectly symbolize the continuing dumbing-down of The Today show, not to mention of television network news and TV in general. Past Today Show hosts must be rolling their eyes, and rolling in their graves! Her voice is so extremely annoying and unprofessional for such a high-profile position on a long-standing morning network news program such as Today. Maybe she will produce the substance behind that voice that will overshadow it and make her role and the show shine. But, my gosh: she sounds just like a highly made- and dressed-up senior year high school cheerleader!?!
I don’t think savannah is dumb! However I agree that her voice is grating and her presence is awkward due in part to her height. Ann seemed uncomfortable in the co-anchor role. I don’t think that NBC has found a good replacement for Meredith who had the chops to manage Matt”s sly nastiness and Al’s goofiness. GMA is a mess! Josh is all over the place and fat, Sam is out of control and the blond is just plain silly. Love Charlie R, can’t stand the ORANGE LADY(Gayle) so I get dressed in the spare bedroom and don’t watch early morning tv.
How funny that she did all those things in the last week! I’m sure it was coincidental that it came at the same time as Curry getting the ax and Today looking for a replacement candidate with “viable” credentials!
I am actually very optimistic about Savannah Guthrie. I am going to miss having Ann Curry as a presence on the show, but I think Savannah has a very appealing and genuine quality that reminds me a lot of Katie Couric.
I am no huge fan of Katie, but SG is nothing like Katie. I don’t see any chemistry like Katie & Meredith had with Matt or the quick wit. She seems cold and fake. I don’t think she’ll last long. I agree with others Natalie would have been much better.
She may be a lawyer (so, too, was Jack Ford, the old Weekend Today anchor) but being in possession of legal sheepskin doesn’t mean a damn thing (ask pretty boy Jack, who got kicked to the curb) when it comes to being a solid reporter.
Sorry, Savannah, you are just another pretty, homogenous face, hand-plucked for overnight greatness without truly having earned it, all the while supplanting someone like Anne who has a resume that far outshines. In addition, I can think of a handful of seasoned correspondents from within NBC’s own stable who could have brought good journalism and winsome looks to the ‘Today’ table: Kelly O’Donnell, NBC’s political reporter; Sara James, the Dateline NBC correspondent and former fill-in news anchor of ‘Today’; Michelle Kosinski, correspondent.
Beware Savannah: Karma doesn’t look kindly on rude usurpers to the broadcast throne. Just ask Deborah Norville, who shined for a mere blink after kicking NBC’s Jane Pauley to the cold curb.
Savannah will be terrific! Smart, sexy gal who can really do a lot.
Doesn’t bode well for NBC, however. As much as they claim to deftly handled transitions on their major franchises, they sure seem to botch a lot of them.
I’m done with NBC. First Conan, now Anne. I can’t believe they blamed her for what is obviously a programming issue. I turned from the station because of the lame stories they were covering. So long Today Show, hello GMA!
Ann’s coffee waasn’t even cold before they named Savannah.
Disappointed. I love Natalie and would look forward to seeing her every morning. Not so with SG.

Ms. Hall is a good anchor. She would be fun to watch. Still disappointed how NBC treated Ann. She didn’t deserve that,
They’re all replaceable. Although Anne,is obviously one of the truly nice people in the business. Savannah is a good choice.
Ann was a class act with warmth and sincerity. That gets you nowhere at NBC, they’ve really gone downhill. I wish they would get rid of phony, pompous Matt Lauer and his three pieces of hair. I don’t know how anyone can stand him.
Natalie Morales would have been a better choice. Guthrie seems to standoffish whereas Ann tried too hard. Natalie seems to have a perfect balance but I guess those rumors hurt her chances of getting the co-host job.

No surprise here as this was well predicated for the last few weeks time she was going to take over this slot for Curry. Lauer is happy and now if the ratings continue to tumble, do they shit-can Lauer or Jim Bell or Steve Capus or all three as a result?

All of this first name familiarity, and foot-stomping “I’m taking my toys, and going home” mentality is ludicrous. Please, people.
Anne was terrible in that job and needed to go. But NBC went about it VERY badly. In that respect, Ann did get the shaft. Still doesn’t negate the fact she needed to go.
Why did Today feel the need to immediately fill that roll, “officially”? They should have just left it open tried some different combinations. Take the Regis show approach (both when Kathie Lee left and now with Regis gone) – try out different people and see what works.
Immediately naming Savannah was a bad idea.

First of all, Ann Curry is a class act and NBC is falling fast. Not due to Curry but because they are so politically one sided it is disgusting. They get every story and interview with Obama, hmm I wonder why? I used to love Meet The Press, I won’t even watch it anymore, the whole network can’t tell the public two sides of anything. I started watching GMA months ago after 60 years of watching The Today Show. At least you hear both sides there. So Ann curry this has nothing to do with you it it just that you are NBC’s fall guy. Watch them it will just get worse and worse and then hopefully Matt Lauer will be let go and Carl Quintila should be hired.
I look forward to looking and listening to Natalie Morales , she’s got the right balance for a major co anchor . I hope she gets the job eventually or go to another anchor job and show everybody what she can do with her beautiful looks , smarts and great personality.
