Jiaflix Enterprises, of which producer and former studio exec Sid Ganis is one of the founders, and the government-owned China Movie Channel plan to launch a Netflix-style streaming service in China, the Wall Street Journal reports. Paramount Pictures has signed on as a participant and negotiations are underway with other studios. The service is expected to launch later this year. China Movie Channel’s internet subsidiary M1905.com already streams some Chinese movies, but the new partnership with Jiaflix will make U.S. and other foreign movies available to Chinese audiences. Getting those audiences to pay to watch movies and TV shows will be a challenge because of the pervasive availability of pirated content. Jiaflix and M1905 said they are working on a “a program to combat Internet piracy in China” but did not elaborate. Janis, also former president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, said that distributing movies online also would allow Jiaflix to circumvent limits the government places on the number of foreign films released in in China.
