EXCLUSIVE: Studios are relying heavily on sequels this summer, but the toughest thing to do is to introduce something new that launches a franchise. It looks like Universal has done that with Snow White And The Huntsman. I’m told that the studio is making all the moves that indicate another chapter is in the offing, and on a fast track.
Universal commenced David Koepp to write the sequel script, which Deadline revealed in late April might happen. The studio is now talking with director Rupert Sanders about a return, after he made his feature directing debut on the first installment. Sanders is interested; he had a great time making the first movie. But unlike most first time directors, he doesn’t have to come back. That’s because Snow White And The Huntsman was sold in an auction by CAA that included a presentation by Sanders of how he was going to shoot the film. Sanders was part of the package, as was producer Joe Roth, and that gave the agency leverage to make a much better deal than a first timer usually gets. The filmmaker is in demand now, but he hasn’t chosen his next film and a sequel might well be it. I understand that the actors in the film have options for two sequels, so that part of the equation shouldn’t be too difficult.
While there were plenty of potshots taken by journalists at Universal and its executives in expectation that Snow White and the Huntsman would suffer the same under-performing fate as Battleship, the film way outperformed its advance tracking for a $56 million opening weekend. It has continued to play during the week and has done $118 million worldwide. It still needs to perform in the next few grueling weeks, considering the film’s costs pegged at a reported $170 million, but there is an opportunity here to make a better film with the sequel. The first film got rushed when Relativity Media hired Julia Roberts and pressed ahead with Mirror Mirror. Relativity burned its bridges with Universal to rush out a film that wasn’t worth it, and Universal also hurried its film. Paying Koepp his fat fee (his franchise scripts include Spider-Man, Jurassic Park and Mission: Impossible) indicates the studio will try to make the most of that opportunity, particularly with no reason to rush this time.

Yeah because its not like the spiderman movies make money or anything….
Why would I listen to an opinion that may be biased to begin with. If my day went like this……..wake up late, sit in traffic for an hour, can’t get my morning cup of joe, because I’m already late for work. After having a caffeine headache until lunch, I’m finally headed home. Oh no, because I was late and rushing, I forgot to pay parking, and my car was towed. After sitting for 4hrs for parking authority to release my vehicle, I’m headed home. Ahhhhh….time to relax, and critic SWATH. I order take-out from my favorite Thai restaurant(please,no spice) its spicy. Ok..you think I’m going to give ANY movie two thumbs up, no! Why, because Critics are emotional human beings too!
)
Stewart can’t act and can’t ride – Bandit ( a horse) had to be put down cos Ms Stewart refused to learn to ride, although in interviews she claimed she did all the riding. Thank heavens for the real actors in SWATH – Theron, Hemsworth, Hoskins, Winston and McShane !
There should a law against actors claiming to have done something in a film when their stunt doubles did it ! Stewart did sit on the horse but as for galloping along the beach in Pembrokeshire last year – a complete fantasy ! I’d love to interview the horribly precocious and marginally talented Ms Stewart – she should play the part of Pinnochio for her next film !!!
WOW!!!…. KRISTEN STEWART and SAM CLAFLIN have cute and adorable chemistry in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN!!! Hope the sequel will have SNOW WHITE and PRINCE CHARMING romance!!! Eric the HUNTSMAN (CHRIS HEMSWORTH) is okay as the lead role but he looks so much older than SNOW WHITE! Maybe KRISTEN and the HUNTSMAN should continue fight together but not as loveteam because they obviously don’t have on screen chemistry!
YES! i want a sequel! I’m a fan of KRISTEN STEWART!!! KRISTEN makes a beautiful SNOW WHITE! I love SAM CLAFLIN too as her Prince Charming William! Eric the Huntsman (CHRIS HEMSWORTH) looks much older than KRISTEN, they don’t have on screen chemistry! Maybe Evil Queen Ravenna and the Huntsman will click as tandem!!!
I honestly think SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN is a better movie than Mirror Mirror. It was incredible, this movie is not boring at all, this is a movie that I can watch like a thousand times and not be bored at all because it’s interesting and the actors are incredible!
I liked it despite the problematic unexplained scene changes and lulls..the end was not good..but a second movie with perhaps sleeping beauty as an additional character would be amazing…and perhaps a she could be a love interest for the dukes son?
This was more entertaining that siskal and ebert used to be. I love reading people practically cutting each other’s throats over movies rofl… really? XD
C’mon people. The whole purpose of the movie was to entertain- and it did. It was beautifully shot. Really breath taking… Was it predictable? Not really. There was no romance really in the film (which is expected) – but hey that’s the reason why a sequel in hopefully being made. I found it funny that the Huntsman was much more of a helper to Snow White to become what she was destined to be – a ruler. This chapter of Snow White and the Huntsman was more about Snow white’s discovery of her true nature – she’s a woman in a fast quest of herself – the people that depended on her needed her. I love that the Huntsman doesn’t try to dimishes Snow White by rescuing her at the end -instead he enpowers her to discover herself. I love it and we’ll see the sequel if that’s the case
Agree
I don’t really see the need to judge the movie… Of course it was predictable; “SNOW WHITE”!!
Makes sense on why the movie was so predictable.. It wasn’t supposed to be completely on track with the originality of the story Snow White, but more of a less fantasy movie.. I honestly loved it and so did many other people who saw the movie.. It was more about the “VIEW/ONLOOK” of the story with a little pencil erasing and pen corrections.. And from my opinion; I saw nothing wrong with the movie and thought everyone played the part they were given
i think a snow white and the huntsman 2 is a got idea. the first was amazing. but i think they ahould drop Rupert Sanders but honestly he isnt needed. now Kristen Stewart has to be in this next one because she is the only reason why people went to see the movies. she is an amazing actress and very popular no matter what people are saying about her right now they will still pay big movie to see her movies. go with kristen and dumb rupert.
