EXCLUSIVE: First they made the movie and now Steven Soderbergh and Channing Tatum are taking Magic Mike to the stage. The film’s director and star are producing a musical adaptation of their male stripper movie. Distributed by Warner Bros, Magic Mike opens Friday. The plan at this point is to have Magic Mike: The Musical on stage and Broadway bound by the summer of 2013. WME’s theatre head John Buzzetti is currently putting together the package. Soderbergh and Tatum will produce with partners Gregory Jacobs, Nick Wechsler and Reid Carolin. Carolin, who wrote the screenplay for the Magic Mike movie and is Tatum’s partner in Iron Horse Entertainment, will write the book for the musical. Magic Mike is partially based on the now-32-year old Tatum’s experiences as a stripper in Tampa, Fla, when he was 19. The movie stars Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, Olivia Munn and Alex Pettyfer. Carolin is repped by UTA and Management 360. Soderbergh is repped by Anonymous Content. Tatum is repped by UTA and Management 360.

So they’re making Thunder from Down Under with more singing?
…Or Naked Boys Singing with more dialogue.
Yeah, they’re just putting the team together now and the musical will be on stage in a year. That’s how they work. That’s how good musicals get written. Good luck, guys.
This either means that testing is through the roof or, God forbid, someone had an original idea OUTSIDE of the “Testing” box?
Either way…Congrats to all.
Test with women is through the roof but men…not so much.
guys guys guys, im glad your movie is tracking well and the buzz is great but at least let us see it before you kill us with the overexposure. come on…
I saw the movie this week … started off great, then fell apart. Matthew M. was terrific … bongos and all .. but, like Boogie Nights … ultimately depressing. The girl, Cody Horn, was excellent … but, the story … well, sucked! Steven’s best directorial project in far too long!
How did you see the movie when it isn’t out yet? Did you attend the premiere or see a private screening?
I saw it TWO weeks ago. These things happen. Don’t freak out.
It screen at LA Film Fest. He also screened in Austin.
Steven’s first in far too long? Contagion, The Informant!, Che Part 1 and 2 ring a bell???
having seen the film at LAFF closing night — it seems like a perfect fit.
Was isn’t Chris Santos starring in the musical? Steven cast This kid in The Girlfriend Experience. Although Chris was a new actor he showed promise. Chris Santos is one of the most popular unknown actors on the planet. He’s darker than Hsworth, less gay than Tatum, and is an artist. He can’t stand the crap being made today and passes on everything. Steven should go back to Santos. He needs this kid.
Haters! No one appreciates when someone else is successful! I went to the premiere of Magic Mike and I’ve seen it! It is more than just male stripping! There is a serious story behind all the much welcomed male nudity! Congrats to Chan and Soderbergh! I’m no expert but I give it two enthusiastic thumbs up
If you’re calling butts in thongs (and one shot of Tatum without) and a silhouetted penis shot “male nudity”, you may need to get out a bit more.
Sounds more agenty than authenticy. Package this!
Wait, what? Is this for real?
This will never get out of development.
1. The trailer sucks
2. The tracking sucks
3. People who have seen it say it sucks
4. The story sucks
Love Channing Tatum and his other works and definitely not a hater – he just needs some extra screening on his decision making.
I don’t know what world you are living in but the tracking is positive, the buzz is positive, the reviews are very positive, and the trailer is fun. Go look on youtube… its almost all likes. Its north of 80% or RT and 88% for Top Critics. I don’t know if you just are making stuff up or are confused or what but your entire comment is stock full of inaccuracies.
MM is going to be a hit in the BRIDESMAIDS/SATC range. Which makes Universal’s $5 million purchase of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY look like the coup of the decade.
“WME’s theatre head John Buzzetti is currently putting together the package.”
With a title character named Magic Mike this better be one hell of a package.
crap. i stumbled into my alternate universe again. how is it this happens
Well the one thing buzzetti knows about is strippers
hey Flashdance the musical is coming to Broadway , why not this
WHy not? It would be fun- hope its there when I visit NYC next summer
