EXCLUSIVE: While Legendary Pictures just set Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter star Benjamin Walker on Friday to join Man of Steel‘s Henry Cavill in the Ed Zwick-directed The Great Wall, a decision has just been made to push from a fall start date until next spring.
Rumors have been racing this weekend that The Great Wall might be crumbling but I’m told that is not the case. In fact, casting on the film continues with Zhang Ziyi (pictured) and other Chinese talent is also being courted for the film.

The issue is weather. The film will shoot in locations in China and New Zealand, and logistically it will be easier to do this in the spring than if the picture keeps its fall start date. Insiders tell me the film will happen, even though a domestic distributor hasn’t yet been secured. It is meant to be the first major film to kick off Legendary East, and with every studio looking for opportunities to make films in China, the project certainly seems viable.
Set in 15th century China, The Great Wall is about British warriors who happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall. As night falls, the warriors realize that the haste in building the wall isn’t just to keep out the Mongols — there is something inhuman and more dangerous. The picture is based on an idea by Legendary CEO Thomas Tull and Max Brooks.
Now, Legendary postponed the Alex Proyas epic Paradise Lost before eventually scrapping the picture over budget, but I’m persuaded the intention is to make The Great Wall happen.

I find citing “weather” as an issue for two locations on opposite sides of the equator to be a bit of an odd excuse. At any given time, New Zealand and China are going to be in opposite seasons… So whatever.
Hmm just wondering if its USA spring or NZs spring?? and maybe worried about all the earthquakes in NZ??
Zombies. Gotta be zombies.
No not zombies the great wall was built to keep out sea monsters.
Tom Tull loves sea monsters they are his favorite thing he thinks John Paul Jones sailed to kill sea monsters so that’s what it has to be.
Legendary East hasn’t raised the funds yet, and Peter Loehr’s 3 months contract to find investors is about to expire because of it.
Reminds me when they delayed Ridley’s Robin Hood because “the leaves are the wrong colour”
Kinda wish they delayed Prometheus because “the script is utter shite and will kill the series”
Funny stuff
There was a widespread rumor in China about Zhang being involved with the disgraced polituro member Po Xilai. Could this be the reason and they need to recast?
These Chinese-Hollywood film funds all sound nice, but they are worthless without projects that have viable concepts. This will be their big challenge. Had can you get a slate of projects that have viable concepts?
In response to the comment by Dallas, I imagine the issue with weather is dependent on what filming will be done and when. New Zealand is currently in winter, whereas China will be in winter at the end of the year. It may not be feasible to create a schedule that works to the prior timescales.
This is the 2012 version of the Europudding movie. Shame.
Smells fishy. It sounds like Mr. Tull and his boys at Legendary are starting to get cold feet like they did with Paradise Lost.
Tull has China Fever! It makes you do some super crazy shit.
If (stress the IF) this film does get made does this mean that Legendary East’s entire slate will be filled with Thomas Tull’s fanboy ideas…., except set in China?
Really? This is what it’s come to? An entire slate filled with movies about dragons and kung fu?
I’m by no means against a great movie featuring dragons and/or kung fu but an ENTIRE slate? Hmmm. Not sure.
