TNT‘s sci-fi drama series Falling Skies, which launched as basic cable’s No. 1 new series in adults 18-49 last year, returned for its second season last night with 4.5 million total viewers, down 24% from its series debut. In adults 18-49, it drew 1.9 million viewers, down from 2.6 million last year. Falling Skies faced stiff competition last night from the strong NBA Finals, which also took a toll on USA Network’s Suits‘ second-season premiere last week as well as the season finales of AMC’s The Killing, Showtime’s The Borgias and HBO’s Girls, among others. Falling Skies‘ ratings result was potent enough to make a third season renewal very likely.

NOOOOOOO surprise here… did anyone watch last season? Ay yi yi. Spielberg needs to stop slopping his name onto these kibbles and bits.
Uh, when was the last time Spielberg slapped his name on ANYTHING genre-related that was worth a shit?
And don’t you dare say Transvomiters…
The final round of the U.AS. Open Golf tournament was in prime-time on the East Coast.
TNT has managed to produce a show that’s on par with some of SYFY’s most laughable features.
The NBA finals didn’t affect The Killing’s finale ratings nearly as much as the horrible writing and execution did throughout last season and this – hopefully – last one. Looking forward to better projects in the future for the actors involved.
Do we know how the numbers yet for The Killing? Still hoping for a third season.
They lost me after the first episode. Sloppy writing and lack of even basic knowlege of physics and real human interaction marks this a standard Spielberg project.
Yeah, I also hate it when the science in science fiction is totally fictional. The gall!
I was in Vegas this weekend but definitely recorded the 2 hour Falling Skies premiere – Show deserves a chance, I’m finishing up the S1 blu-ray commentaries and extras today and then gonna jump right in – well, maybe after I go see Tropic Thunder at Film on the Red Rocks tonight.
I don’t watch tnt regularly anymore(i miss nypd blue and judging amy reruns)and had no idea it was on until 4 hours before it aired. I think their marketing job wasn’t exactly great for this go around. I may have seen commercials for it but they certainly didn’t leave an impression.
I thought the first season was a snoozefest. Noah Wylie is totally phoning it in. Alien invasion never seemed so boring.
The ratings are not shocking. The fact that Falling Skies made it to a second season is the surprise.
Bad timing. Spent all Sunday celebrating Father’s Day, not sitting in front of the TV watching one more crappy downer dystopian scifi show.
When are studios going to figure out we want scifi with a positive spin, no parade after parade of “how horrible can we make things for our characters?”
The sad thing is, this is one of the best science fiction shows on American television right now. With Fringe on hiatus, that just leaves the few dregs of truly terrible original programming on Syfy, if you are a fan of the genre and don’t want to watch reruns of BSG, Doctor Who, or Stargate.
More Maggie!
TNT should leave the bad sci-fi to SyFy.
Really? Am I the only one who likes this show? Parts of the premiere literally had me on the edge of my seat. I think it’s tense and exciting and it’s less a sci-fi show to me than a show about war.
Love falling skies still super bummed about his Tera nova these are so much better than more reality TV and drama more please!!
Quality aside (yes, the first season was ugh…torturing children? Really?), the sci-fi genre is driven by DVR Live+7 ratings. Let’s see how it does when all viewing is fully tallied.
This two hour opener was so much better than the best bits of the entire first season! loved it, there was a lot of tension and I can’t wait to see the rest of it!
Something about the character chemistry is not cutting it…I keep wanting it to be great, and its pushing it to say its good…I enjoy any syfy so this is better than none, but I look at some shows with great character interaction (Firefly?, SG – Universe? Anybody else miss those?) that I really looked forward to every week that got cancelled, and its hard to understand how this one is coming back. I will continue to wait and watch, hoping this show “matures” into something worthy of renewal on its own merits….not just numbers produced by people like me, reluctantly tuning in each week hoping for something better than the week before.
Not bad for a Fantasy Show, but they need alot of work on the Script and Acting. If this was in the real world they all would have had their butts kicked by the Aliens. This group of Patriots are Totally Unorganized. They do not fend well in a fire fight, there are no tactics being used, when they stop to take a rest, they have no perimeter defense, no listening posts, no nothing. By the way what happened to the US Military when this ruckus started???? And, I have not noticed if there are veterans in this group of Hero’s, currently there are 4 – 5 million veterans in the US, so did they get wiped out too……
