EXCLUSIVE: It looks like procedural drama Unforgettable will indeed not go forgotten. I’ve learned that CBS, which cancelled the series starring Poppy Montgomery and Dylan Walsh in May after one season, is in discussions to bring it back with a 13-episode order targeted for next summer. The network declined comment.
Following the cancellation by CBS, Sony Pictures TV, which co-produces Unforgettable with CBS TV Studios, began actively shopping the series to other networks, including TNT and Lifetime. Unforgettable centers on Carrie Wells (Montgomery), a New York detective with the ability to visually remember everything, who works for a team led by her ex-partner and boyfriend, Lt. Al Burns (Walsh). Unforgettable would mark the highest-profile summer original scripted series to air on CBS in a long time. The network recently ran another crime procedural, Canadian import Flashpoint, in the off-season.
The axing of Unforgettable was surprising and one of the closest calls this upfront season. When asked at the day of CBS’ upfront presentation what went wrong for the show to warrant the cancellation after a relatively solid first-season run, CBS entertainment president Nina Tassler said the question is not “what went wrong with Unforgettable but what went right with the new pilots.” In its first season, Unforgettable averaged 12.1 million viewers and a 2.5/7 among adults 18-49 and was the most-watched series on any network to get the hook.
TV Editor Nellie Andreeva - tip her here.

So Nina chooses “two in the bush” over the “bird in the hand”.
Interesting.
This is why you don’t want to be at CBS Studios. When you sell to yourself, it’s the end of the road at cancellation. When you’re a studio without a network you have leverage!!
Dylan Walsh still deserves better than this mess of a show.
Why oh why can’t #Alcatraz be in talks to bring it back!!! WTH!!
I didn’t watch the show, and I don’t typically watch CBS, but I’m glad to see that such a successful show might be given more time. Cancellation works my nerves.
The show had a full season in a consistent timeslot following a good lead-in and airing against mediocre competition. It had plenty of time. As for it being “such a successful show,” I bet you think D grades in school are “successful” because they aren’t outright failures. Unforgettable was one of the worst CBS performers in the demo.
Sure glad you aren’t my parent.
Hey ma, I got an A!!
Well everyone else got an a+, and you had the help of your older brother, so really you might as well have failed.
OK, Gemini. Readers are curious. What do YOU consider – you got some breathing room here – are successful shows. Compared to ‘Unforgettable’, for one, which was a new concept. BTW… which were cancelled.
Oh, what’s your take on ‘Person of Interest’?
The concept was new, but it made no sense.
You can’t recall things you yourself haven’t actually experienced. I watched about 15 mins of one episode, shut it off, then gave it a 2nd chance and shut it off after 10. In both cases, aside from inane dialogue, she was recalling things in detail she hadn’t actually seen or experienced. (In one case, she remembered seeing a letterhead and, as a result, could recall the writing beneath the letterhead b/c apparently her memory has a Zoom capability and can thus “read” things her eyes never actually did. Sure.)
At any rate, Gemini is right; the show was NOT successful. Successful means, in this context, that people were watching…and people were not.
Poppy’s great. It’s not her fault.
I’ll also reply to your Person of Interest question: If you can buy the ridiculous premise, it’s a lot of fun. I have trouble buying the ridiculous premise, but I’ve enjoyed an episode here and there.
Fantastic news! Love the show, love Poppy Montgomery.
Sounds like one of those cases of not wanting what you have until someone else wants it!! Whatever the case, I am very happy to hear this news. I loved the first season of Unforgettable and was very surprised when it was cancelled. Good for you CBS.
Great show they need to focus more on dylan’s character!! Can’t believe CBS canceled it , we are all glad the show I’d back !!
,
Well, Scandal was renewed w/ a 2 in live+same day. So was Smash. So was Touch. Why not Unforgettable?
Answer: Because it was on CBS. If, as a network, you’re averaging a 3 in live+same day, you don’t need to renew a show that’s stuck at a 2, regardless of timeslot. The fact that the other nets were all much lower is the reason why they renewed those circa 2 newbies.
SMASH renewed is still a dumb decision.
Yes, but for the intervening time period Greenblatt seems content to operate in the same general intelligence level of Sucker and Silverman…
Here’s a thought about what went wrong with “Unforgettable”: worst writing on TV. I mean, cardboard characters, astonisgingly ham-fisted dialogue, and plot twists so obvious you could see them coming your way through a sandstorm. Poppy is great, as always, but what a crap sandwich they’ve given her. CBS got it right the first time. Cancel it.
Couldn’t agree more. Perfect analysis.
@ Pitiful and Gray: Yes. What you both said.
So basically, TNT and Lifetime passed on it. How wise they are. This show was the worst show on CBS this past season. Let it die already.
BRING BACK CSI MIAMI, NOT THOSE SHITTY PRODUCIALS LIKE UNFORGETTABLE
LOL, CSI Miami IS a “s—ty” procedural, like most of the CBS lineup.
This show sucked… barely able to make it through an episode. Normally I like Poppy but with that awful clown red hair and whatever she has done to her lips, couldn’t stand to watch her. The rest of the cast was a total snoozefest.
Best mystery on TV. Carrie terrific role model for young women and has a fantastic following. Never went below 10 mil – even when Pres debates were on. Tops 14 mil. The show treated audience with intelligence – weekly breaking down a plot within a plot. Sad to see negative comments above because what I’ve seen on the web shows so many viewers were almost grieving the loss of a series that was smart and had a lot more to offer its audience. Unfortunately – too many today love reality shows, daning and singing shows – all so shallow. Unforgettable has great screen writers, actors, character development and deserves a big Brava for it’s brave/smart efforts both in front and behind the camera. And if people actually had the interest to research the neurological condition – what Carrie has exists in about 20 people living today. Proven neurological condition.
Fascinating all the way around. Common – let’s keep it going and remind networks that people aren’t stupid and Unforgettable knows and shows that. Great news – Twitter and Facebook will fans will be so happy!!!
Thank you Dan.
Nancy hit the nail on the head. Too many ‘shallow’ viewers out there. If they had half a brain it would be out looking for the other half. Well, on this one, score 1 for the CBS execs. Now… if only NBC brought back ‘Harry’s Law.’
Nancy- are you Poppy’s grandmother? Or the creators? It’s the only rational explanation for your cheer leading of an at best mediocre show with a truly lame premise. I watched it a few times, kinda like when you slow down on the 405 when there’s a wreck.
WAY TO GO NANCY AND TO ALL THE OTHERS WHO WANT TO CONTINUE TO WATCH UNFORGETTABLE! Bring “Unforgettable” back ON! Most of the negative comments primarily came from the “males”…..let’s see, were the males testosterone-based ego’s challenged with a strong, confident, in-charge and smart detective character being a woman?
PLEASE BRING IT BACK!!!! OMG IVE WANTED TO SEE THIS NEWS FOREVER NOW!!!! CBS DON’T GIVE UP ON IT. SUCH AN ADDICTING SHOW!!!
Good lord, look at the biceps on that woman! Now I’m upset I never saw that show.
Poppy’s biceps were the stars of the show! She ran around in a tank top in 95% of the scenes, even when the other actors were wearing leather jackets. She is a fine actress, but Ben Jammin is right-the long long clown red hair was a distraction. So tiresome to watch American Actors who look like anything but the hard-working character they are supposedly playing.
Somebody has to do something to this companies, “thay need to stop canceled shows for no #@#%$$%# reasons” If this showns are not making profits or whatever reason, make a nice and a real end!!!.So please, stop!!! doing this!!
I loved “Unforgettable” and will definitely watch when CBS brings it back!
Poppy Montgomery is fantastic, and after a few early episodes the writing and team of characters started to gel into a very good show.
Just make sure to resolve the Carrie’s sister storyline in those 13 episodes.
Great but will someone please pick up THE FINDER?
Cause it sucked
I enjoyed the show. My guess is that other channels were interested and instead of looking foolish if did well on cable bring it back. If they didn’t want it then CBS would have let it go.
As for all the bashing, you have to be kidding me with all the stuff out there. Just watch FOX crime shows and get back to me.
I liked the show but thought it centered too much on Poppy’s charector. I hope they develop the other cast members and we find out more about them – that would greatly help the show. The concept is fantastic! It just needs more development of the rest of the team.
Glad you came to your senses. Loved the show. There arent too many good shows out there
It got really good after the first few episodes and that finale was awesome. CBS would be wise to put this show back on the air.
Averaging 12.1 million viewers……… I’m just sayin’!!!
This is baffling to me…this show, like Jericho and others which were destined for the CXL bin somehow gets renewed for an extra season and yet Las Vegas fans, who have only wanted a proper conclusion to their show, still can’t see anything happening down the road? I mean, really? Fans have been asking NBC for years to just produce a few episodes or a full-length feature to bring about closure to the show, but yet that goes into one ear and out the other but yet junk like this show on CBS gets renewed out of the woodwork? Unbelievable!
