EXCLUSIVE: While Universal Pictures has been trying all summer to generate new franchises, the studio is getting moving with the fourth installment of its biggest one, Jurassic Park. Universal is setting Rick Jaffa & Amanda Silver to write the script for the
fourth film, which will be produced by Steven Spielberg and Kennedy/Marshall’s Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall. Spielberg won’t direct this one. The first three films, which started with the Spielberg-directed 1993 blockbuster Jurassic Park based on the bestselling novel by Michael Crichton, have grossed over $1.9 billion worldwide collectively. Universal is rereleasing the original film in 3D on July 19, 2013. The scribe are repped by CAA and attorney Don Steele.

Has anyone read William Monohan’s draft for JPIV? I’ve been curious to hear input about it.
(I’m assuming it’s not the stupid draft that had weapons manufactures attaching missiles and weapons on dinosaurs, right?)
Just remake it at this point.
Have the park fully operational and open to the public when the dinosaurs get loose. Bigger body count, more chaos and setup sequels.
Pretty certain SS would never permit that.
horrible idea. JP is not about mindless body counts. If they were to remake it, the only decent reason would be to follow the book page by page.
Well four were killed in the first one, maybe 12 in the second and four in the third.
Are audiences going to go see another film where a small group visits the island and from that only 4 minor characters get picked off?
They need to raise the stakes which was never really done in the sequels. They brought a T-Rex to San Diego and what 2 people (including the villain) and a dog were killed?
It has to be something different and not something stupid about having weapons attached to the dinosaurs.
Universal is going to reboot it at some point, forget a fourth one which will probably do worse at the box office than JPIII after inflation anyways.
Shoot it in 3D, have an actual cast (Tea Leoni and Bill Macy?) and make it the big blockbuster it deserves to be.
I loved the first movie, I have seen it over a hundred times at least. However, I’ve also read the book a few times, and the book is way better than the movie. Sam Neill could still play Dr. Alan Grant, and Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm was a match made in heaven. However, if it’s going to be remade, it would unfortunately need a new cast, to seperate it from the original. This time, follow the damn book, it would make sequals way easier to come up with. Mainly, the first sequal, just follow the second book. Michael Crichton was a brilliant author, there is a reason his books have done so well and that so many of his books have been made into movies, and that more should (State of Fear, for example) Anyway, remake the first one, following the book.
The original doesn’t need to be remade – it’s held up really well the past 30 years and still has better VFX than a lot of blockbusters nowadays.
30 years? You mean 20. 19 if you want to get specific.
I really believe that would be utter brilliance!
I agree with this story concept it wouldn’t have to be a reboot. It’s a few years later time has passed and corporate greed and ignorance of the past prevail !
The problem with the JP films is that you always need an excuse to get the characters onto one of the islands.
That’s the essential problem with the movies. In the epilogue of the original novel (although Crichton didn’t really touch on it in the sequel) the dinosaurs do migrate to the mainland.
Rise was an amazing script– high hopes for this one.
Yes, it was. Did anyone else think RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES was an uncredited adaptation of Michael Crichton’s NEXT?
It was damn close. Clearly, they’re Crichton fans. Either way, any lingering hopes of a NEXT adaptation are probably shot because of it.
But, good for them. They can actually write. This will be a solid – if not inventive – script. Looking forward to it.
And they are truly great people. It’s nice to see them reaping success and opportunity! Well deserved!
Yes, I agree. In fact, I just read “Next” and all the way through I was having deja vu, thinking I had read it before. It was because I had seen “Rise….” It was sort of an Alzy moment.
Could it happen again? This time we’ll do it better. A young charismatic billionaire (Think: Robert Pattinson) buys the original island where the defunct Jurassic Park was housed. He believes in John Hammond’s vision and wants to finally have it realized despite the casualties that occurred over the last 20 years.
He has created new dinosaurs after the first batch were bombed with more modern infrastructure and security. Hammond was ahead of his time but now we have the technology to rebuild. The Jurassic Park dream can finally come alive in 2014. This time there’s new species and hybrid crossbreeds. They’re smarter and more ferocious.
The guests for the first preview weekend have been selected, a group of elite influentials and thinkers (a reality producer, etc). BUT also some Charlie & The Chocolate Factory-style LOTTERY WINNERS.
It’s sure to be a memorable weekend! Finally we’ve got this thing under control! The Jurassic Park dream can be realized! We’d never let disaster happen again…… (cue: a roaring T-Rex), you know what comes next… Stephen, take it from here!
No Robert Pattinson for JP plz :S
I sincerely hope we get a reprise of the script treatment that had a mercenary waking up in the Alps and having to teach genetically-grown “smart” dinosaurs engineered by a billionaire. The reviews of that treatment were hilarious!
Either that or restart the whole franchise. JP3 was decent, if underwhelming.
I’m with Cshifty. That sounds like a pretty solid premise. With this writing team, I’m optimistic. I was quite impressed by ROFPOTA.
Screw a remake. Are you serious? Plenty of possibilities exist with the material to do something similar if they want to go that route…but a remake? When they’re re-releasing it next year? Give me a break.
I’d like to see dinosaur hybrid splices.
It has been 12 years since the last movie so obliviously there are not plenty of possibilities otherwise Jurassic Park 6 would be coming out soon.
They’re trapped in a corner and no writer has figured out a good enough reason to greenlight one.
A reboot can allow for the writers to plan out another trilogy, developing that world and including references and hints in the film that lets the sequels happen naturally and not just
“How about a kid ends up on the island and Sam Neil is tricked onto the island.”
Ingen’s competitor was dropped from the series, wouldn’t they want to go on the island?
They probably went into bankruptcy
But there’s a possibility; have Biosyn (InGen’s competitors) go to the island, capture some dinosaurs and have them break free in the mainland. Simple and effective, although kind of seen already- in TLW InGen itself stole its own dinosaurs and the T-Rex broke free.
Or what if Henry Wu had created new dinosaurs somewhere else in the world? He didn´t die in the movie, and he probably knew everything there was to know about dinosaur making…
Finally good news!
Or rather excellent news! Jurassic Park is my fave movie and when I saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes, I actually compared it to JP, it was that good. This restores my faith in JPIV completely.
Kind of a shame that I didn´t get to write the movie tho XD Now let’s see how similar it is to the idea I had.
Monahan’s script is decent, though it does wind up at the alps, mostly hinges on someone going back for the Barbasol can Newman (wayne knight) drops in the first one. Kids are all grown up in it, and yes, it does climax on a gondola high in the alps.
Dear Hollywood: I see where you’re going now, and I have some ideas:
Birth of a Nation: Rebirth
Battlestar Potemkin
The Ten Commandments Eleven (Clooney is Noah!)
More Birds
Ben Hur Jr. (Starring Will Smith as Ben)
F-Troop: The Movie
Some More Goddamned Star Wars
It’s A Wonderful Life 2
Wait for it. . . PolterGhost!
Has anyone done an Outer Limits movie?
Mad Men: Bahamas.
Alf. Yeah, I said Alf. Oh yeah, well f*ck you, Alf was huge.
ET again, but this time with Andy Serkis
Oh, also:
Godfather vs. Soprano
Vampire of Oz
Twotanic
You’re late on the ALF movie. Already in the works.
Screw AvP! It’s time to make
EWOKS v E.T.’s!
F-TROOP: THE MOVIE… actually in development… was at Disney, then Warners. The guy who made the Leslie Neilsen, Linda Blair EXORCIST spoof, REPOSSESSED; has the rights and is trying to make it.
Rule #1 is write what you know so Rise of the Planet of the Dinosaurs is what they’ll write. The dinosaurs take over earth and make us their slaves. The dinosaurs can talk and do everything intelligent apes can do. The End.
Why not change the typical.
Have scientists with colonization on the moon using a controled habitat for dinosaurs. Of course visiting tourists bring a pet which accidentally escapes and causes havoc in a mutation .
Or forces the escape in to human habitat! when someone uses this send check to me LOL!
Hiring these two sounds right. The charm/magic/appeal of the first Jurassic Park is that it melded Science Fiction with Science Theory. Rise of the Planet of the Apes did that pretty damn well. Also, the latter film dealt with animals/creatures/monsters breaking out of their cages and running amok into society, which to me sounds like JP4 will deal with a Dino breakout/invasion on the main land. This has great potential, but even better potential if they put Sam Neill, Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum TOGETHER as a trio. Joe Mazzello and Arianna Richards would be welcome as well. Obviously new characters need to be introduced, but people forget how great those original actors were in those roles, and how much potential they now have in further films.
I think the only excuse to have Sam Neill and Co. reprise their roles would be as help to contain a dinosaur invasion in the mainland. Grant has already been twice to the islands and he almost died both times; Malcolm, the same, and besides he has no particular interest on dinosaurs like Grant would, and Ellie is married and has two kids, I don´t think she would risk going to a dinosaur-filled island for any reason. The only solution is to, like Ludlow said, “bring the animals to them”.
Otherwise the only characters I can see returning are Hammond, his grandchildren, and perhaps Henry Wu…
I want to see Prometheus Park. Get Ridley to direct and you’ll have something amazing he can continue his story about the Engineers starting life on earth but this time we have to see how they created dinosaurs. Ridley skipped over that part let’s see the dinosaurs evolve from alien DNA then you get two movies for the price of one it will be two sequels combined into one movie.
Where’s one-time uber-hotshot screenwriter DAVID KOEPP when you need him? This scribe was like the GO TO GUY for so many 1990s hit movies (THe Lost Word; Jurassic Park; Mission Impossible; Toy Soldiers) Guess he burned out. There was a time when he was the biggest/best paid writer in town.
oops…mis-type. Shoulda been “LOST WORLD” for Koepp
He got eaten by the T-Rex in The Lost World, he was the guy with glasses who gets eaten in the street.
Wow. Seventeeen comments, and not one about the actual announcement. Since Rick and Amanda took a dead-as-a-doornail asset at Fox (does anyone else remember that Mark Wahlberg defeated the Apes in the Burton movie by lighting a giant fart?), and re-kindled the franchise with a smart, fun, intelligent, reboot that was a huge worldwide hit, they’ve earned the right to surprise us with this one.
In Rick and Amanda we trust.
While more Dinosaurs sound fun (and I am sure the that money tree is ready to be shook) I would rather see another POTA movie. Rise was excellent and I am curious as hell to see where they could take the next one.
I think Caesar will probably die in a fight with Koba (I think that was his name), the angry ape that pushes the evil scientist off the bridge. He obviously hates humans and is very smart so he could rebel against Caesar’s “no-kill” policty so to speak. I bet it will be Koba, not Caesar, who will start the “take over the world” thing.
Yay Mandy and Rick!
Book guy- missed opportunity not calling it
It’s a Wonderful Life, Too.
Maybe there will be a T-Velociradilophadactyltrispinostegosaurus Rex in this one – it’s like T-Rex times INFINITY!
(They’re always trying to find a bigger/”scarier” monster…)
GO RICK AND AMANDA!
Their script for Apes should’ve at least been nominated for an Oscar. Looking forward to JP4 – maybe it will be the first one with a good script.
Everything these two touch is magical. It certainly will be well written with plenty of new ideas.
Congrats.
If they’re going to continue to call it “Jurassic Park” they should bring the story back to an actual park. Make it a science-fiction “We Bought A Zoo”.
They never did anything with Lewis Dodgson or Biosyn? He appeared in JP1 and never again. Possible antagonist in JP4?
