Joe and Anthony Russo are in negotiations to helm the sequel to Marvel’s Captain America: The First Avenger. The next film to follow the 2011 hit is scheduled to be released April 4, 2014. Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are writing the screenplay. The sibling directors helmed 2006’s You, Me And Dupree and are the executive producers of ABC’s Happy Endings and NBC’s Community. The Russos are repped by WME.

Um… huh.
Okay, this is the first move that Marvel Studios has made, director wise, that I don’t really see the logic behind. Who knows, maybe they can knock it out of the park… but those particular credits don’t seem to have anything to do with a big-budget superhero film like this.
Maybe they think Avengers is hot because of Whedon’s Buffyspeak jokes and puns. I personally loved Avengers for the action and effects, not for the dorky quips.
Two perfect credits that translate to Captain America. Hey Marvel, the first Captain America movie sucked, try not to blow it again.
No, it didn’t. And the first 45 minutes were as good or better than THE AVENGERS.
How good is Capn’ 2 gonna be after the dudes from You Me and Dupree get done with it? The dudes from Dupree are a huge stepdown from Joe Johnston. What do the dudes from Dupree know about writing epic films? Sure, they’ll obey the suits and not make waves but this film is gonna stink. Dear me.
I hope they do Action better then they do comedy. A LOT better.
Have you even seen Community? You apparently don’t know comedy if you have seen it.
wait…what?
Marvel has been VERY forward thinking in their choices of directors (even when the final product doesn’t quite work). Still, this seems like a perplexing choice.
Minus the period setting of the first film, I’m not sure I see this sequel working out — and minus Joe Johnston, who brought an actual identity to the original a lot of these bland super-hero films have lacked, it’s going to be a tough road ahead.
Why in the world you’d hire the directors of YOU ME AND DUPREE…that is also a mystery.
The 21st C setting really puzzles me too. The way Cap is relevant to the modern day is that he’s a way of doing a story about America – what it should be, what it shouldn’t be – because he’s the essence and guardian of America as it should be.
There will be some stuff Cap likes – the decrease in racism, presumably (we never saw what his attitude is towards racism in the 1940s but he sure had no problem calling Samuel L. Jackson “sir” in Avengers). So what will make him uncomfortable? The vast disparity of wealth? Is he okay with gay marriage? This could all get way too heavy for a comic book movie, very fast.
Maybe they’ll just have him fight Al Qaeda. Back to his roots!
This just sounds like a bad, bad idea. Don’t get too cocky after The Avengers, guys. You can still kill the cash cow if Iron Man 3 isn’t better than Iron Man 2, and if Captain America 2 is as bad as Green Lantern, then Avengers 2 will be a last ditch, desperation effort to right the ship, not a guaranteed smash hit.
Hey, maybe Cap will say he only’ll be at SHIELD a couple of days, but ends up crashing there for months. Then, perhaps he’ll get in the middle of Maria Hill and Nick Fury, before burning the entire headquarters down! That silly Dupree and his antics- whoops, I meant Cap.
Really though, why didn’t they just stay with Joe Johnston? It seems as if Captain america isn’t really Marvel’s interest- I mean with their weak shortlist of directors and planned April release…
Uhm…this kind feels like they are giving the franchise a full hysterecto.
Jon Favreau wasn’t exactly an obvious choice for Iron Man, either.
ZATHURA was really well done. The title and Dax drug it down, but otherwise it was really slick and competent.
Favreau had directed Zathura.
Word is the script is garbage and they aren’t having Whedon rewrite this time. Goddamnit. Marvel!
How the hell was George Nolfi ever in the running?!
WHAT NO WHY
Marvel is smart and takes chances good going
Marvel – Please reconsider!
Joe Johnstone too expensive now that Disney just wants the cash cow to be milked for all it’s worth?
That’d be my guess.
I hear the script is a disaster. Wish Whedon was doing a rewrite again.
What? Arrrggghhh. For the love of god, just bring back Joe Johnston. Why are you so eager to f**k up a good thing, Marvel?
NO NO a thousand times NO, Kevin Feige!
random. why not give it to fellow whedonite drew goddard?
Agreed with the consensus. Why are these guys being considered for ANY Marvel movie, that isn’t a remake of “Howard The Duck”?
If they just takke that stupid mask off of him and make him look more like he did in the Heroic Age comics I’d be happy.
Seriously it’s like he’s wearing a blue body condom.
This is a really bad idea. I have no idea why Marvel has faith in these guys. Truly no idea. Can they direct CARPOOLERS? Sure. They are fine “sitcom” directors. But “Me and Dupree”: was a disaster. I’m sorry to be a hater but this makes non sense. I can’t wait to read how these guys being HUGE comic book fans too. What nonsense.
Such a stupid move. If you want a talented brother team — go with the Hughes Brothers. Those guys would do such a better job on every level. Marvel this is a disaster waiting to happen.
Whedon should do a pass on every.single.Marvel.film from now on. It’s the only way to ensure the continuity. My god, I can’t believe it’s going to sh*t this quickly.
Cap’s my favorite Marvel character. This is looking like a disaster through and through. STOP! Take the time to ensure some integrity in the script rather than churning out a piece of trash to meet a release date.
Who thought this was a good idea aside from their agents??? Holy cow!! These guys are NOT feature directors. Or should I say, they are NOT good feature directors let alone for a Marvel property. There are endless better choices. I bet you these guys have never even read Captain America comic book in their lives. These two should stick to directing fair TV pilots. I can’t wait to hear their false rap at SDCC. Marvel don’t shoot yourself in the foot.
