EXCLUSIVE: UTA motion picture literary agent Tobin Babst is leaving the agency to partner with Aaron Kaplan and Sean Perrone in management and production shingle Kaplan/Perrone Entertainment. Babst becomes the first new partner Kaplan and Perrone have brought into the firm, which is moving to bigger offices on Beverly Drive this summer.
Babst, a 15-year UTA veteran who reps screenwriters and directors, started in the agency’s mailroom in 1997 after graduating from NYU’s Tisch School with a BFA in screenwriting and playwriting. Babst met Kaplan and Perrone in the UTA mailroom, and the three were assistants together in the motion picture literary department for three years. Kaplan and Perrone left to form Kaplan/Perrone in 2000, and Babst was promoted to agent.
At, UTA, his client list includes Jesse Wigutow, Evan Daugherty, Melissa Rosenberg, Jonathan Tropper, Nancy Oliver and Marc Klein.
“We have known and respected Toby both personally and professionally for a long time and are excited to partner with such a skilled advocate of writers and directors,” Kaplan and Perrone said in a joint statement.
“I’ve watched Aaron and Sean build a dynamic and forward-thinking firm over the past 12 years, and I saw an opportunity to not only help them grow the company but also to become a manager and provide focused representation to artists in film and television,” said Babst. “I have had an amazing experience at UTA; I love the agency and all of my longtime colleagues, and am looking forward to collaborating with them all in my new role.”
“Tobin has been and continues to be a great representative for artists,” UTA managing director David Kramer said. “We’re excited for him, and look forward to working with Tobin in his role as a manager.”

AK and SP are the best guys doing it in the business. Hands down.
They really are great… Babst has excellent taste and is a smart addition. K/P is moving into a new era, glad to see it. Good guys who act like complete pro’s – imagine that.
My brother and I concur.
many of the writers he repped at UTA have managers… will be interesting to see how that plays out.
Good move, though that’s not an impressive list after so many years.
No one takes managers as seriously as even lesser accomplished agents. Clients see managers as a nuisance, unless you’re a Guy Oseary type.
The worst types are the ones who couldn’t cut it at the agency and had to transition after being assistants or trainees. It means all the other agents didn’t think enough of you. This is not like that.
Tobin is a stand-up guy and will be a great manager! Best wishes to him!
Babst is smart and so hot.
Having engaged with Tobin numberous times as a producer, it’s become abundantly clear to me how much he truly cares about his clients, and what a committed, passionate, and effective representative he ia. All-too-rare to see today, and so even when we butt heads, I only ever have tremendous respect for the guy. Wishing him all the best in this new endeavor- seems like an ideal fit.
Toby is not only a class and and a great advocate but he has the best taste in the business. I applaud his entrepreneurial move.!
CONGRATS MAN! Go get ‘em!
Congrats to Toby! His clients will be very lucky to continue to be represented by him— he has an encyclopedic knowledge of literature and advocates for his clients better than anyone. What a great team over at Kaplan Perrone!
