EXCLUSIVE: USA Network’s upcoming political/family drama series Political Animals has tapped Vanessa Redgrave for a provocative guest stint. The Oscar-winning actress will play Diane Nash, a lesbian Supreme Court Justice, the first openly gay member of the Court who is friend and mentor to Elaine Barrish (Sigourney Weaver). Greg Berlanti and Laurence Mark’s six-episode series centers on divorced former First Lady and newly appointed Secretary of State Elaine Barrish who throws herself into the job after recovering from the dissolution of her marriage to ex-President Bud Hammond (Ciaran Hinds) and losing the presidential nomination. The character, who is certain to draw comparisons to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, tries to keep her family together, while simultaneously dealing with crises of the State Department and a hungry DC journalist (Carla Gugino) bent on destroying her career. In addition to Weaver, Redgrave joins fellow Oscar winner Ellen Burstyn on Political Animals for a tour de force acting trio that has 15 Academy Award nominations among them. The series, from Warner Horizon, is slated to debut July 15 and air in the Sunday 10 PM slot. This marks Redgrave’s first series gig since her arc on Nip/Tuck.

how sad this is where he career has gone. who is she listening to?
I really just hope that the material is there. With the cast it’s assembled there has to be something damn good on the page to work with. Right?
Guess what movie I won’t go to see.
Uh. It’s a TV show.
But sexual orientation isn’t even that big a deal. Lesbians are very diverse – and very open about their political opinions – a lot of them are surprisingly conservative!
This could be very fun character, depending on the writers and Redgrave’s sense of adventure.
Redgrave isn’t a lesbian, so where is the diversity in that?
Very true. My best friend from high school is a lesbian and she and her partner are conservatives.
Hey dim bulb, it is on television. Reading comprehension is apparently NOT your forte.
Brother, you need to chill and get out of your parents basement.
This would be the last thing I would ever watch, if I never saw another movie…..and that possibility grows w/each passing day.
Who gives a sh!t what you will or won’t watch?
I agree with you 100%. As long as I have control of the On/Off switch, I will keep it OFF. I have heard enough of, “People coming out of the closet and Minority Profiles.” If you are a Lesbian or Gay, so what? It is nothing to go celebrating about. I am cross eyed, so should I have a big Celebration proclaiming this? I was born this way, and I accept it. If you were born Gay or Lesbian, so what?

…Or show…
As though your opinion mattered. You couldn’t even read the post right the first time around. LOL.
I am sure that they will have the usual disclaimer at the end.
Any likeness to anyone is strictly coincidental!!
They should have gotten a plump actress – so it would be more credible
Not mentioning any name of the real Justice – ahum
Is this the new fad? Not long ago all they were coming up with were Vampires and Zombies, now it’s P.C. political crap. How about a show about a Vampire President and his Zombie V.P.?
We pretty much have that now don’t we?
Who are both in love with a lesbian environmentalist werewolf.
For the nonce you’ll have to be satisfied with “Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter” coming to a theater near you!
and I bet she will be the most conservative justice on the court….holding my breath on that one.
A lesbian supreme court judge at a time when the gaystapo is pushing a constitutional act on gay marriage. Come on.
I implore the Hollywood congloms to stop. First of all, isn’t this entire concept an oxymoron?
Or is it more propaganda? Why not create a show about nondescript people in black robes deciding arguments based on the Constitution?
“the gaystapo” wants a “constitutional amendment” ?!?
jeeze dude…your post makes absolutely no sense whatsoever except, i gather, that you don’t like gay people for some reason.
The reason is likely his or her own gay feelings. Cf. Larry Craig.
Here is a truly radical idea: You disapprove of this or any other movie simply don’t watch it. As to your demonstrated homophobia I as a happily married hetero male request (not any any way respectfully) that you STFU.
Not even the supreme court can wash away the guilt of the behavior indulged. Man has not the power to legislate away sin. All the parades in the world will not change this.
Makes my top ten list of shows I have no interest in seeing. How did Lifetime not snap this up?
Really? Yet another movie featuring a gay or lesbian character? How about some real men and women? Gawd, I’m going to go watch Patton.
Uh. Have you seen George C. Scott’s performance in PATTON? I think that character’s sexuality is much more complex than you realize.
Field Marshal Montgomery: Don’t smirk, Patton. I shan’t kiss you.
Patton: Pity. I shaved very close this morning…
“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”
Gee, I can hardly wait. SMDH
Sounds like a job for Oliver Stone.
Destroying the dignity of our institutions one by one.
She is about as relevant as this show. What a joke.
I’m really confused. Different articles call this show different things. Is it a six episode mini-series, or is there potential for it to grow into a full fledged series with a shortened first season?
It’s a shortened first season (6 episodes) with a chance for a full season two and beyond depending on ratings. USA has high hopes for this show! I’ll be watching, it looks great and you can’t beat the amazing cast!
I won’t go,nothing new to see?
I wonder who this character could possibly be modeled after?
Uh, what does one’s sexual orientation have to do with deciding on the constitutionality of various litigation and legislation?
For the same reason Vaughn Walker should have recused himself from the Prop 8 case.
…and, by your logic, all straight judges should recuse themselves from every case that effects straight people. sheesh.
Maybe this is Hollywood’s attempt at preparing the US public for Elena Kagen’s coming out.
And that would matter, why?
oh boy!! betcha that will be a hit huh? LOL jeez. this trash wont last long and will disppear like all the other crap HollydeviantWood puts out. NO one will even remember it existed in month or two after. LOL
Well, you know, after careful consideration I believe that I will miss it.
Will she be engaged in lesbian sexual activities while wearing a robe? If not, what point is there in her being lesbian versus straight? Or, is this a “wrestles with her identity over legislation” story?
If so, a Justice isn’t supposed to focus exclusively on THE LAW and not being in their personal biases.
If this were a documentary, you might have a point. It’s a DRAMA.
Wonder how many of you would be worrying about this if the character were described as a straight woman having an affair with a male Attorney General?
Gag me. Mmmm. That would be nice…..
Never realized there were so many conservatives on Deadline.
sadly, there are as many liberal dems who freak out every time something about gay people is mentioned. gay folks are everybody’s favorite punching bag.
must miss. just what i expect out of hollywood.
