EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that Warner Bros is pumping the brakes on The Thin Man, the remake that Johnny Depp plans to star in for director Rob Marshall. The film hadn’t been green lit yet, and they hadn’t got to the point where they set an actress to play Nora to Depp’s Nick. But I’ve heard that Marshall will likely move on and direct Into The Woods as his next film at Disney. Marshall has also been working on that film for some time. A budget for The Thin Man was just submitted, and I’m told there isn’t a big rush here because Depp wants to take some time between films. But Warner Bros can’t have been too happy with the performance of Dark Shadows, another quirky remake of a period piece with Depp. The studio hasn’t been shy about pulling back on films like Arthur & Lancelot and Akira over budget and redeveloping them for cost. Word is that this budget came in north of $100 million, and that it was a factor. The original plan was to start production in late November, but that will change as Marshall eyes Into the Woods next and The Thin Man after. WB tells me the film wasn’t green lit and the studio denies there is any drama going on.

Jean Dujardin as “Nick” with Cate Blanchett as “Nora” – perfect!
Right, because he starred in a black and white movie set decades ago that also featured a cute dog. Yeah, he’s a natural! Nick Charles wasn’t French!
You’re ALL wrong. JON HAMM would be the best Thin Man if WB makes it at all, which I’m against anyway. He sure as hell wouldn’t cost $40M.
And Jack M. above is the only one who’s right; Uggie would make a FANTASTIC Asta.
if warner brothers need another director with a great eye, why not get chris nolan, bump the release date back a bit give johnny and chris some time and have chris rewrite the script if he doesnt like it, it would be something odd and out of left field to hear about, i always loved the idea of them working on something together it would be something new and different, i have always luv the idea way back when johnny was rumored way back to play the riddler, it my wish list of things
Says the astute “insider,” referring to “chris” and “johnny”.
OK, so… Blanchette, Knightley or Weisz as Nora?
Only English/Aussie actresses can take on Myrna Loy’s role? (who was from Montana!)
Emma Stone I think is the best choice for Nora. She would be fantastic and not try to recreate Myrna Loy’s version of the character, but make it her own.
I do so hope they make this movie at some point…
Nah, you’ve all got it wrong. This has James Parsons and Lindsey Lohan written all over it.
You’re welcome.
I remember there was a time when seeing Johnny Depp’s name on a movie made me excited. How I miss those days.
Please no! Do not let Rob Marshall hyjack and ruin a movie of INTO THE WOODS!
Anyone but him.
He is a choreographer who thinks he’s a director, and his film directing has been proven to be nothing without an incredible editor and Cinematographer.
I would have said he can only pull off things with heavy modern choreography… but then look what he did to NINE.
INTO THE WOODS is the farthest thing from what Rob Marshall should be doing.
I really think MICHEL GONDRY should direct this. But I can think of 50 directors who should be in line before him, including but not limited to: Sam Mendes, Danny Boyle, Darren Aronofsky, John Cameron Mitchell, Guillermo del Toro, Julie Taymor, Mike Nichols.
Chaz, many directors would be nothing without a good editor and a good cinematographer. Most of them probably.
Let’s hope they dump Marshall if they put the project back in the pipeline. Geisha and Nine were boring – and Pirates 4 was just godawful.
I don’t need a remake of the wonderful Thin Man series, but if they must do it, I could see RDJ better than Depp, although I like them both. As for Nora, I could see Rachel Weisz, Kate Beckinsale, Keira Knightley, or Rachel McAdams.
There’s something wrong with Hollywood when a remake of a 1934 film that was shot in 12 days (and was really a B-picture, since Powell’s career was on a downswing, and Loy had never really broke into the mainstream after nine years of playing vamps and “Orientals”) needs a $100 million budget.
All I can say is that on my birthday it is a nice present to receive this news. They should leave great classics alone! Why should they want to tackle on a type of films they have long forgotten how to make?? Hollywood has long forgotten how to make witty well written simple films, all they care about now is 3D, science fiction, ludicrous stories with as much special effects as possible!!
A “Giuliana & Bill” ad – talk about a “Thin Man” buzz kill……..
Robert Downey is a great actor but playing Nick Charles after doing his Tony Stark and Sherlock Holmes it would smack of too much of the same thing. They need to look to Broadway to cast this one properly.
Someone wants to remake The Thin Man?Oh. Dear God. Excuse me. I need a drink.
I always saw David Tennant as the new Thin Man, not Depp or Downey, though they are both very talented. Tennant is quick-witted & excellent at physical comedy. Since he hasn’t broken though in the states he would be cheaper which would bring down the budget. $100 is ridiculous for a comedy/detective mystery!
Irrespective of what is probably a pay-or-play deal for Depp and “The Thin Man” – there IS drama. Depp’s standard deal probably just got rear-ended certainly until after “Lone Ranger” and just when he’s going to need the “stupid money” the most – during a divorce. He’ll be great in “The Thin Man” though – William Powell never looked like much of a spring chicken – and Rob Marshall’s great. From what I’ve heard they’re both incredibly nice guys. I looked at “Rum Diary” recently though – there’s a scene where he’s got his fingers in his ears to block out what someone is saying – he’s doing Pee-Wee Herman
If this means we get Into the Woods sooner then I’m all for it!
Depp never married, so he won’t lose 1/2 of his fortune. He’s overexposed & should take some time off right now. Tennant would be an inspired choice. He showed great range in Dr. Who. I don’t know if Marshall is right for Thin Man. Perhaps a director more familiar with comedy than musicals would be best.
kristen stewart and rob pattinson as nick and nora..i think they would be great in acomedy…
It depends on whether his long-term relationship with a child (children?) is considered a common law marriage in France I guess. But you’re right and I was wrong. Reactive commenting – always a mistake.
Okay how in the world was Dark Shadows a flop? I thought it was a great movie when I saw it on the first day of release.
The way they are doing this movie is just all wrong. The key would be to try to keep the movies relatively similar here….Or else it’ll just be a cross between Pirates of the Carribbean and Ganster Squad :/ These movies are oscar and academy award nominees!!! I’m surprised anyone even wants to remake them. The dialog would be hard to emulate, but that is what will be required to make this movie successful. regretfully, I see them taking the easy way out and turning it into more of an action movie. However, with keeping in the same theme, I have to suggest better casting. Collin Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel would do a much better in these roles than Johnny Depp and their top picks for female lead. Remember, Nick Charles isn’t supposed to be a young buck, but he’s not an old man either. He’s had years of detective experience and is not overly boisterous. I see Johnny Depp playing someone who makes mistakes and finds clues in odd places. Nick Charles looks for things in places that no one else would because he’s just that good. I hope someone important reads this. I would hate to see such a wonderful movie/series get a bad name from its remake.
Collin Ferrell and Zooey Deschanel. That is all…
