EXCLUSIVE… UPDATE: Hollywood’s major agencies have found great success repping below-the-line talent, and especially cinematographers transitioning into directors like Wally Pfister.
WME‘s recently arrived agent Dan Aloni made this high-profile sign since the Academy Award and ASC Award winner has been Chris Nolan‘s constant collaborator — and Aloni reps Nolan. ICM says it will still rep Pfister as a cinematographer. But Pfister is making his directorial debut on an untitled Alcon Entertainment project which Nolan will executive produce along with his wife and producing partner Emma Thomas. (Pfister right now is searching for a cinematographer for that pic.)
Pfister has been the cinematographer on every Nolan film: Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, Inception and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises. Interestingly, Pfister during post-production on Insomnia reportedly tipped Nolan to Christian Bale in Laurel Canyon and suggested the duo meet, which led to Bale being cast as Batman. Pfister recently revealed that he and Nolan shot some 60 minutes of the latest Batman sequel in 65mm IMAX, a real departure for him. Pfister is also known for his work on director F. Gary Gray’s The Italian Job and Bennett Miller’s Moneyball.

This became a no-brainer as soon as Pfister segued to the director’s chair. Aloni looks like a bouncer.
One of the greatest of all time
You somehow failed to mention that Nicole Clemens, one of his agents at ICM, announced she was leaving the agency two days ago. Seems relevant, no?
Tremendous.
good catch for wme. makes sense he would find a new home after Clemens moved on from icm
Nicole Clemens had nothing to do with Wally’s rise. Paul Hook was the agent who got Wally opportunities. Wally is a fantastic DP and has charted a great course on his own, but as far as other people responsible for helping him ascend, Paul Hook is the one and only.
This is complete and utter nonsense. Paul did an amazing job building Wally into the powerhouse DP that he is, but Clemens was the one who took the reins and brilliantly agented him into the directing space. Let the haters hate. Fools.
Agree. nicole and paul both did good work for wally. but nicole left and now is his chance to move agencies to a place that is in the filmmaker business at the highest level without being disloyal to nicole. “icm says he is staying for dp work” is such b.s. though, why would he do that, even if he ever dp’s again? it’s utter nonsense and a desperate pr move that makes icm look even weaker than they already are. also the move had been discussed and in the works with a few agents involved over the past several months, well before aloni arrived at wme. the idea that he signed wally on his own is also astonishingly ridiculous, but i guess it helps sell more advertising
come on do not rewrite history – Wally got his start at Innovative when no one would take him. He meet Chris Nolan through Innovative when Innovative got him the Momento gig – then and only then did Paul Hook care and well – how hard was it after that? Paul got him how many movies that were not Chris Nolan films? How hard was it to get him a job? Not hard at all – His career was set long before he ever represented him. know your history people!
Wally got his break with Chris Nolan at Innovative Artists where both Chris Nolan and Wally Pfister were represented. Paul Hook did nothing but poach Wally and make a lot of money
There hasn’t been too many DPs (Jan De Bont, Nicolas Roeg notwitstanding)who have made that leap successfully, but Pfister is very talented. It should be interesting.
It was heather Parker who introduced Wally to Nolan when he was as innovative. During insomnia he left innovative and went to icm. Yes Paul got him laurel canyon, slow burn and money ball. Get the facts straight and if you don’t believe me ask Paul or Wally.
Why would Wally go to WME as a director but stay with ICM’s Paul Hook as a DP?
Simple, WME is great with directors, the divide between WME and ICM as it comes to directors is vast.
But when it comes to below the line. Paul hook is the best Dp agent on earth, hands down and the rest of his dept is solid too. They are 10000 light years ahead of WME’s BTL dept.. the studios laugh at WME’s BTL dept. it’s run by an incompetent commercial agent supposedly.
So Wally is being smart, if directing doesn’t work out , he still has Paul Hook by his side, and he would still be sought after.
Why should he give a great DP career over to WME’s BTL hacks??
Smart move Wally!
It doesn’t take the Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew to figure out who posted this.
can’t help but be a little skeptical at anyone transitioning directing a feature, but he’s certainly a great guy and awesome DP.
Wally meet Chris Through Innovative Artists when Both Wally and Chris were represented at Innovative. Paul Hook did nothing but gain from the work that was already done at Innovative. Wally will not DP again he has his eye on being one of the big Hollywood directors – the guy is really talented and knows his politics well!
Actually, Wally’s career started at Innovative. He was there for years and they introduced him to Chris Nolan. Paul Hook called Wally right before the Momento premiere, and he left without thinking twice. And Paul spent the next decade reaping the benefits. Feeling bad for Paul is like feeling bad for a wall street bank. Don’t forget that most of the talent in this business is grown at the smaller agencies.
I wonder if he will shoot it on film?
