Produced by Kinetic Content, The Taste will be hosted by no-holds-barred chef Anthony Bourdain and British food star Nigella Lawson. Four culinary experts will each mentor a team of competing pro and amateur cooks as they vie to turn out the tastiest dish. The groups will face team and individual challenges through elimination rounds. ABC has ordered 8 episodes from Seven One International, the international sales arm of Red Arrow Entertainment Group which backs Santa Monica-based Kinetic. In June, the network posted a casting notice for the then-untitled show saying it was on a “nationwide search for all types of cooks from all backgrounds with range of cooking styles.” Bourdain is also readying a new weekend program for CNN that he’ll host in 2013.

Hate cooking competition shows, aside from Iron Chef. I don’t want to watch people rushing to finish cooking and make mistakes because they have to add surprise ingredients or kill the meat themselves or switch partners and work with the obligatory douchebag contestant. I want to see skilled chefs use knowledge and skill and prepare a dish correctly. In Nascar, you watch for the car crashes. If food is involved, just let them do it right. Food Network’s pathetic food truck competition flamed out trying to keep the race going when the burger truck was so far ahead it was a lock to win. “Here’s a twist! You can’t cook those hamburgers that sell so well anymore!” “You have to convince other restaurants to provide you with the supplies you usually buy yourself, which is why you succeed!” “Uhh… EVERYBODY HAS TO RACE TO THE TOP OF A MOUNTAIN!!!”
FYI, Iron chef is timed and always features a surprise ingredient.
Masterchef meets The Voice, another original commission from ABC…
I quit watching The Food Network ages ago, it became the competition network, and Bourdain is a big windbag. Now I watch Food Network sister channel Cooking Channel, more cooking even repeats of past shows, less or no competition.
Oh, Geez! Really? I’ve just learned to actually appreciate Guy Fieri after watching “Big Bite”. He gets extra points from me by involving his family in the show. He’s definitely a whole piece of work, but the “Triple D” shows move quickly and are an excellent snapshot of places in the US.
I feel the same about Andrew Zimmern, an affable host, but his way off beat “fare” is too much, for most people, in my opinion.
But Anthony Bourdain continues to come across as a completely unlikable jerk, and I don’t understand why programming types don’t see it. His shows are unimaginatively produced and aren’t even shot well. Again, in my opinion.
Competitive cooking shows are great for DVR’s, where one can watch the first few minutes and skip to see who wins! Most contestants I’ve seen appear to have come fresh off an episode of “LA Ink”. A bit too much, for me anyway. I’d love to see a charity celebrity competition, but with all the egos afoot…nobody would want to lose.
Someone please give Anthony some attitude lessons!
I happen to love Anthony Bourdain and not because he’s a jerk or because he’s on t.v. but because of the blood, sweat, and tears he had to put in before he even wrote Kitchen Confidential. So he may be abrasive and unorthodox but he’s a damn good cook and an extremely talented writer. As a cook, I’d be honored to be mentored for even ONE day by Mr. Bourdain!
Wow. I can’t see how anyone can hate on Anthony Bourdaine but here it is. He’s the kind of guy I would love to go out and have a meal and a drink with. A real guy with a real opinion and someone who’s come up through the ranks. If you don’t like Bourdaine and think him a jerk and unlikeable I’d have to wonder what type of person you are and probably be very suspicious of you.
Hi,
Thanks for such a great information. In these days its hard to find a honest blog .
This is sooo exciting! I love your blog and check it every day.the blog has grown so much. Wish you & the blog more success!
I’ll be the first to admit Bourdain’s certainly not for everyone – maybe thats why they are putting Lawson in the mix. I’ve been a fan of both of them for years (especially Bourdain) and I just find the whole thing hilarious. Maybe they can add some singing and dancing or obstacle courses and just get it over with. Maybe they can find some over the top, snooty, holier-than-thou judge to make snide remarks about the food…
Just as long as they don’t pair him with the culinary atrocity known as The Pioneer Woman. Here’s hoping at the very least, Tony has some creative control in this venture. If he thought Paula Deen’s cooking was unhealthy, he should take a look Ree Drummond’s fruit cocktail cake.
If it’s unhealthy cooking you want then Nigella has got to be near the top of the list. Sometime this show will reach the British Food Network which is sufficiently full of crass shows already.
I have to give up no reservations for crap like this? Super lame.
It sounds okay but please don”t take my G.H away for it.
He was on the Travel Channel, not the Food Network
Daveda – Ironically you are coming across as a judgemental jerk.
Tony was on the Food Network back in the day. Then moved to the Travel Channel.
I’m a fan of both Anthony and Nigella. I love both their down to earth styles and look forward to this show. I think Anthony has mellowed a little since he married Ottavia, she seems to bring him that needed balance. He’s still just enough rough around the edges, but a bit more grace if one could say that lol. I think pairing him with Nigella was genius. I love her! She has style, flare, imagination, a wholesome goodness without being a goody two shoes! She’s a perfect balance to Bourdain. I hope this will be a successful venture for them both.
Hey’ laid off Anthony I love him.
Looking forward to a new show in January on regular networks. January will be full of reruns. Glad to have something new on regular network TV.
I happen to like cooking shows like top chef and master chef so I do plan to watch the taste. That being said anything with bourdain is going to have entertainment value
I don’t know alot about Bourdain – so I look forward to checking this show out for that reason – however, I am a Gordon Ramsey fan and he can be quite a harsh character too, but quite an excellent chef. I will give the show a chance because I love to cook and I always find new ways of cooking and recipe ideas when I watch these kinds of shows and since I don’t have dish or cable it’s a show that’s available to me.
I think I will like the show. I DO NOT like the girls that bring the spoons out. They look like hookers SORRY. (Not Necessary)
Actually the chefs know the ingredients ahead if time.
This show sucks I would never watch it again the judges r rude I dont see this show go anywhere
I really like Anthony and Nigella, I am a fan of them both. I watched the Taste, it was a good idea. Good Luck with your show. I would love to cook and be in your kitchens cooking with you anytime. Good Luck with the new show, thank you for being such awesome chefs and a real inspiration to me.
This show is disgusting. The judges don’t know what type of fish they are eating and turn down everyone. It is obvious that these judges should never be anywhere near the kitchen if they can’t tell seared tuna from other types of fish. They look like air heads trying to scrape up a team. I am not sure what type of mentoring they are going to provide if they keep turning down talented cooks that could probably teach the mentors a thing or two about cooking. I am highly disappointed in them since they are suppose to be great in their perspective fields.
i feel the same and disapprove at the way nigella criticizes with such disdain and disgust!
This show is great! Iam a big Bourdain Fan and Nigella w/Anthony,
just brings it up to the next level. As a foodie,I consider them
the “Simon and Paula” of the food challenges. Good Luck w/ the show you “Son-of-a-B-”
This show is so slow and boring. Will not be watching anymore
