EXCLUSIVE: I hear that ABC is planning a tweak in its Wednesday fall schedule. New comedy The Neighbors, originally slated for the post-Modern Family 9:30 PM slot, will move to 8:30 PM, while Suburgatory, which was to stay put at 8:30 PM, will move to 9:30 PM. A switch to the 8 PM family hour would make sense for The Neighbors as it hails from Dan Fogelman, writer of such Disney animated hits as Cars and Tangled, and is more kids-friendly than the average network fare. It is about a regular family that moves into a gated community where everyone else is an alien. Additionally, after a promising freshman showing at 8:30 PM, a run behind Modern Family could lift Suburgatory to the next level. Here is a trailer for The Neighbors.

This is good news and bad news for Suburgatory, it gets a big lead in from Modern Family and it might help raising its ratings but if the shows ratings stay the same it might get the Happy Endings treatment.
Is the Happy Endings treatment a third season pickup?
Suburgatory is my absolute favorite show. They had better not be messing around with it.
Neighbors from the scenes I saw looks terrible and I was shocked it got picked much less get the best time slot. This is a good move because it could help Nashville as well.

We were too, but our network here in southern Mississippi aired it as being on Wed nights @ 9 pm……guess what’s not on :S Not happy…..

There are so many people working so hard to make a show like this great. Talented people, too. But yeah, it looks worse than awful. Hopefully this is just bad marketing.
Terrible idea. ABC had a solid comedy block from 8-9:30. The word on Neighbors is bad and this will weaken the block.
I suspect this is more about ABC getting cold feet over The Neighbors than Suburgatory.
Keep moving The Neighors, ABC, until it’s off the schedule entirely.
The whole pilot is godawful. It’ll be gone by October.
The Happy Endings treatment is being shuffled off to Tuesdays where ABC comedies move to die.
Suburgatory is better off remaining in the 8pm hour.
“Where ABC sitcoms go to die”? I believe Last Man Standing has a word with you… and remember, Happy Endings has a decent lead in, too. That’s not bad treatment at all. And a full season, unlike Cougar Town.
Also, no, this is the perfect place for both The Neighbors and Suburgatory. Really smart move. Neighbors is an 8/8:30 show through and through. Suburgatory had gotten a bit lost at 8:30, hopefully gives it more exposure.
Just get rid of Alicia Silverstone. God, she sucks on the show. Not to mention the last 5 or 6 episodes creatively tanked.

Agreed about Silverstone and the last half-dozens episodes being a compete mess. I’ve never seen a show tank in quality so quickly.
Yeah but Last Man Standing wasn’t exactly a hit, reaching mid 1′s by the end of the season.
Middle America will love this. I believe it’s a good move by ABC. Insiders comments indicate you guys have been “inside” too long.
Exactly, you can tell this is a simple Disney type show NOT another Modern Family, which we don’t need more of. Paired with Middle this show should do just fine.

Agreed…kid-friendly high-concept show with silly humor. Based on the ads I’ve seen, I don’t see the problem.
Still, considering Suburgatory is one of the only primetime shows with a young lead, I wish it had stayed in the 8:00 hour as well.
ABC should have moved Malibu Country next to Nashville and put Nieghbors on Friday, where it can’t hurt anybody.
Having Malibu Country on Fridays is part of ABC’s strategy to build a family comedy block on Fridays reminiscent of the TGIF block a few decades ago, which was popular. MC also skews old and fits with its lead-in, Last Man Standing, which makes it a shoo-in for success there. ABC Wednesdays are already established, so ABC wants to put more promising new shows where it wants to build.
Look at what they did last year. Their most promising sitcom (Last Man Standing) started a new Tuesday comedy block, which was a hit for a lot of the year.
UGH. Leave Suburgatory alone. It’s GRRRREAT! This stupid alien family comedy, The Middle and Happy endings all SUCK and should be CANCELED immediately.
I agree with your assesment of Happy Endings and “this stupid alien family comedy”, but I have no clue how you can be a Suburgatory fan and not a Middle fan. As a fan of both I can tell you that they have a lot in common.
One guess: When Suburgatory is trying to make something funny, it doesn’t fall back to “let’s have all the main characters scream over each other for minutes at a time.”
I like The Middle, but they’ve got to cut that out.
You don’t appear to be very smart. The Middle is a show that gets bigger ratings every season and has already been sold into syndication.
It would be okay to say, “It’s a popular show but I just don’t get it.” But to talk in absolutes about a successful show needing to get canceled just because you don’t care for it is dumb.
How was Suburgatory off to a promising start? This site seems to coddle that show and has lost some cred over it. That show stinks. It had anemic ratings that dropped each week. They probably figured the new show couldn’t do much worse, and might do better.
Yay this is great news as I thought that Neighbors looked below par to be nice and suburgatory is great which could really be helped by the new timeslot, plus now I can just watch from 9 to 11 without having to break. Can’t wait for the awesome Suburgatory to be back one of my fav. new shows.

The Neighbors is my least favorite new show. So I want it to get a worse slot. However, now I’m probably gonna have to watch it ’cause it’s in between my 2 favorite shows in the world.
Suburgatory’s change to 9:30 would boost its ratings, but now I’d have to fully rely on DVR to watch it.
In the end, I’ll sacrifice DVR clogging for ratings. I can always sit in the bathroom for 30 minutes if The Neighbors ends up on my TV (cause you know I have no control over it
Suburgatory consistently either beat or equaled its lead-in. It was ABC’s best-rated new comedy of the 2011-2012 season. How is that “anemic ratings”
Suburgatory did fine, and you need to do your research. It posted strong retention out of the Middle, and often grew out of it. Not to mention when it didn’t have new episode of The Middle as a lead-in it still stood strong.
I’m not quite sure why ABC didn’t put “How To Live With You Parents” in the fall, after “Modern Family”. Seemed like a good fit for me (even though I have not seen the pilot or read the script). “The Neighbors” could have waited in the bench along with “Family Tools”. But about the switch, I’m all in favor of it ! Seems more logicical. “Suburgatory” can do better than “Happy Endings” and “Don’t Trust The B—-”. Hope it will ! It’s a nice show.

“The Neighbors” is not my type of show, and I cannot imagine personally I will watch… but it plays broad and is family-friendly, and there were moments in the trailer where I did chuckle. I think 8:30 is a perfect fit for the show, and is also a safer berth (inbetween The Middle and Modern Family) than the 9:30 timeslot. Suburgatory suits the later timeslot and already has a built-in audience, which will also help launch Nashville.
Overall the best move ABC could’ve made I think.
This swap makes sense but there’s no way in Hell I’ll ever watch The Neigbors. As a lead out for The Middle that could hurt it short term & expect Neigbors to be an early cancellation
