AMC‘s The Killing will end its run after two seasons as the network has opted not to renew the mystery drama for a third cycle. Series producer Fox TV Studios plans to shop the series to other networks.
The Killing, an adaptation of a Danish format, launched strong in 2011. Its first-season finale was one of the most talked about episodes of television in the past few years, triggering controversy with the decision not to reveal the killer. The show returned lower in Season 2 and never regained its ratings momentum. Still, the renewal decision was considered a tough one for AMC as the network faces the departure of Breaking Bad and has likely two seasons left in Mad Men, while, controversy aside, The Killing is established and features two actors, Mireille Enos and Joel Kinnaman, who have broken out in a big way since they were cast in the pilot of the show. “After much deliberation, we’ve come to the difficult decision not to renew The Killing for a third season,” AMC said in a statement. “AMC is incredibly proud of the show and is fortunate to have worked with such a talented team on this project, from showrunner Veena Sud and our terrific partners at Fox Television Studios to the talented, dedicated crew and exceptional cast.”
FtvS issued a similarly-worded statement, saying that “it is extremely proud of The Killing, the extraordinary writing staff and crew, and what we believe is one of the best casts on television” and stressed that “we will proceed to try to find another home for the show.”

They took the Emmy snub to heart.
It’s not a snub if the show sucks and it doesn’t deserve a nomination.
Yep. Sons of Anarchy and Justified were snubbed. the Killing got what it deserved.
Season 2 was snubbed, season 3 not so much. It was ok, but definitely not as good.
The writer that got rid of Whine-ona should be given an Emmy and a raise, however.
Sons of Anarchy is garbage compared to The Killing.
Never seen S.o.A. but I guarantee that it’s better than the piece of crap that was the Killing.
But yet Downton Abbey got 16 nods for a horrendous second season that was universally panned.
Universally panned ? Quite the opposite, UNIVERSALLY ACCLAIMED ! It might not have been considered as brilliant (92 on MC) as the first season, but that Metacritic score (84) based on 26 reviews, still makes it one of THE best reviewed TV-shows of the last year or so.
It was quite strongly panned.
Good because that series sucked and was boring. How did it ever get a second season anyway?
I hope they find a new home for the show. I liked it a lot
Me too. They messed up by the ending for the first season but it is still a great show and the cast is amazing.
Me too…regardless, it was a fascinating show because of the character development… Excellent actors, and twisted plots
Season One was terrific… until the finale, which was lame and a cheat. I never went back.
My sentiments exactly. I’m glad it failed –toldja, Veena
Can’t wait for the piling on this woman to begin.
Big Veena fan here. Can’t stand to see all of these nattering nabobs spew their incessant negativity for someone who is so talented and cool and nice. Why must Hollywood be full of haters or, better, why can’t the haters who live on a steady diet of snark and bile just stay in their caves so the rest of us can celebrate the talents of those deserving few who enjoy a scintilla of success in this field of work and art?
Looking forward to what magic you spin next, Veena.
Why must Hollywood be full of haters? Because the haters are usually those who simply can’t hack it and are envious to the point of emotional instability. They’re self-loathing fools who only feel better by tearing down others.
The Killing was an exceptionally well written, well acted, well produced show. It’s a shame it lost its audience in season two. Both seasons were terrific television.
Agreed.
You get what you deserve.
When you screw over your fans, expect the fans to walk away and not care hen yo get cancelled.
Agreed! Too bad, it had such potential. I couldn’t get through the first episode of season 2.
….and that’s what happens when you take a piece of great television and *adapt* it (ruin it).
The Killing is an awesome european, massive, hit show and the US version was greatly acted and made but the writing was an insult to the audience and to the source material.
I’ve seen the whole Larsen murder case played out on the Danish show, Forbrydelsen (a Danish word that translates into English as “The Crime,” not “The Killing”). The American remake was actually SLIGHTLY better, and the Danish show was full of red herrings and blind alleys just like the American show — and the first half also ended on a massive cliffhanger that the Danish viewers had to wait a good while to see resolved.
Odd, because the UK loved both shows, and the common perception was that the US version had the better ending.
Yes, the US ending tied the murder to both the Larsen family narrative and the show’s political storyline. In the original Danish series, the murder turned out to have nothing at all to do with the political narrative — so that whole dimension of the show was all one big red herring on a scale that makes any red herrings in the American show tiny by comparison.
Agree with mikeyone. The Danish version was far more compelling overall. And all of the British reviews I’ve seen said so as well (Guardian, Telegraph, even bloggers like CrimeTime). Ratings were never significantly better for the US than the Danish one over there either. Really wanted to like the American version, but it just wasn’t that interesting.
The Killing was lame. Watched the first season. Very painful and slow. Joel Kinnaman was the only character who even interested me.
I loved the show at first, but I got really tired of all that rain…And the weather made the actors unattractive.
But the rain was the worst part about the show. And way too many cell phones breaking into the threads of the story.
Damn!
Season 2 was actually better than the season 1. Great TV.
Honestly, how many canceled shows in the last 5 years that the producers.studio have said they would try to find another “home” actually did?
That’s just PR Fluff.
Exactly. They can shop it around all the want, but nobody will want it.
Noooooo!!!! This makes me incredibly sad. By far one of my favorite shows. Brilliant. Moody. Yes, the pacing was slow, but that provided so much time to delve into the rich character dynamics. NO! AMC No!
What really went wrong? Veena or Fox or AMC?
The show was entertaining, but it still couldn’t hold a candle to its original “Forbrydelsen”.
I was entertained, for the most part, by the twisty “who dunnit” story arc, but I had no empathy for Linden. Holder was dynamic and great, and I wanted something physical to occur between Holder and Linden, just to elicit a shred of good feeling toward her character. When it didn’t happen, I really disliked Linden, and felt the show didn’t deliver the payoff it needed to. Lame.
This show, the writing staff, the acting was so top notch. But when a show is ratings challenged, what can AMC do?

Add zombies.
Good, frees AMC up to do something more interesting than a murder mystery. TV abounds in those. I expect more imagination and guts from AMC.

Nope, looks like the remake of the UK murder mystery Low Winter Sun is up next. http://www.deadline.com/2012/07/mark-strong-in-talks-for-lead-in-amc-pilot-low-winter-sun-james-ransone-co-stars/
And Mark Strong, who starred in the original, will again star in the remake set in Detroit.
Now maybe BBC America can show Forbrydelsen 3 after BBC 2 airs it in England with subtitles.
This is very disappointing. I know that after the season 1 ending, people were turned off, but I loved watching season 2. Say what you will about the storyline (which I realize is the most important thing), the acting, the directing, the cinematography… all outstanding. I got to a point where I didn’t care about who was the murderer, I watched to see the details of every episode. Well done, cast and crew.
Two more seasons of Mad Men sounds overly optimistic. This season already feels a bit tired, but maybe it’s just me.
This show needed to go. Hopefully it makes room for more high caliber television we’ve grown accustomed to from AMC. They can’t stay afloat with Walking Dead forever…
Mad Men is already guaranteed two more seasons. It could go on longer if Weiner decides to, but personally I think that would be a mistake.
I would definitely watch a Season 3, especially if Veena Sud was replaced. Would like to see Holden/Linden on another case.
There is a wealth of great mystery material out there. We have some of the best writers working in the genre and there is no need to go mining foreign television for ideas, particularly if they’re going to be done as poorly as this was. I watched for the comedy value until the horrible writing and plotting drove me away completely.
Did they ever reveal who the murderer of Rosie was? I stopped watching in season 1 because it seemed they would never get there. The red herring twists were so obnoxious. I liked the one guy detective. So if the show came to a conclusion at some point then I might’ve watched.
Yes, the murder was solved in the final episode of season 2 — just like it had been planned from the very beginning.
The main actors in this show were excellent but heavily let down by abysmal writing and significant mistakes by Exce Producer Veena Sud. It’s not a big shock that ratings dived when you literally tell your viewing audience – both in interviews and in the product itself – that you don’t give a rip about them.
Worrying about how good the actors look is one of the biggest problems with Hollywood today.
My son n I liked the show, but we didn’t like the ending of season2.seasons
Can we PLEASE talk about how much THE KILLING ripped out TWIN PEAKS? I know Sud denies ever having seen it, and discredits it as an influence, but let’s get f*&cking real. They should be sued for how often and shamelessly the pulled whole storylines, imagry, scene blocking, etc, etc, etc from PEAKS. Don’t believe me? Just watch the scenes from each pilot of the girl’s parents being told their daughter is dead. It’s astonishing, and infuriating.
Enos, Kinneman, and Brent Sexton were the only reasons to watch the show. They managed to rise above some pretty ridiculous and repetitive writing, finding some truth in that pile of silliness.
I like the show and think the acting is great, but had the same thought immediately about TWIN peaks. And it just kept getting worse as the episodes proceeded. Once the Casino-in-Canada bit was thrown into the mix, I mean, come ON.
Would like to see Dale Cooper and Sarah Linden work together on a case, though
