SATURDAY, 2ND UPDATE: Ann Curry did not co-host, according to some people who watched the Today show this morning, even though NBC said she would. But, yes, she is reporting from Aurora and contributed to a number of stories, following her Dateline anchoring last night..
FRIDAY PM UPDATE: Less than a month after she departed NBC’s daily morning show, Ann Curry will co-host the Today show with her replacement Savannah Guthrie. Both are traveling to Aurora to report on the shooting at a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises. They will co-anchor Saturday and Sunday. Curry also will anchor a special Dateline Friday at 9 p.m. Brian Williams and Kate Snow will also anchor NBC Nightly News from Aurora in the days ahead. This marks Curry’s first time returning to Today, and she noted when she left the show that from time to time she would be returning as the leader of an NBC News team covering global events.

Good for her!
Ann Curry seemed so solidly in her element covering this tragic, hard news story much more so than she ever did talking about mind-numbing fluff on the “Today” show. As if her good, professional showing on the Aurora story weren’t enough, there’s this poetic justice: ratings for “Today” have dipped since Ann was usurped from her morning chair next to Matt Lauer. And now this strange twist: Ann and her successor could be on the same set covering the Aurora shooting for “Weekend Today” on Saturday. Life sure is strange sometimes.
Good luck, Ann… and keep up the good reporting.
This story isn’t about them, no one cares who the “F” is covering it. “Today” may pick up some of the viewers who dump GMA after Brian Ross’s bad reporting. Then again NBC News did edit the Zimmerman 911 call and Romneys trip to WAWA, Maybe CBS be #1 soon?
You realize this is an industry news website, right? While no one may care who is covering the Aurora shooting story, this specific article IS about Ann Curry and the business decision to have her return. But I guess you wouldn’t realize that this was an industry news site because you’ve delved into unrelated George Zimmerman and Mitt Romney territory.
Well said, Alex. As for your other responder, this may be an industry website but let’s not forget that the head of this site has been very moved by this tragedy and rightfully so. Who cares about Ann Curry right now? I mean, come on.
Well I got on just to see if she was on this Saturday morning. And even though I got on at the last hour of Weekend Today I hadn’t seen her yet in the last hour 9:00 AM EST. And I also have not heard her name be mention. So the question is did Ann Curry go if she did then will she be on the Sunday Weekend Today? I had really hope to see her on this weekend.
If she had changed her mind I can honestly say good for her.For all this could’ve been just for trying save face of the Today show if that is the reason they did this sadly that is not the way to save what they are now finding out was the wrong thing they did by letting her go.
Sometimes anchors are hosts but not at the desks.
Always the better fit frankly. Arrogance (not hers) about Today’s preeminent ratings pushed her into a chair. She’s a terrific reporter and a great utility player for all of NBC News.
Is anyone but me sick to death of Ann Curry’s ham-handed, overly dramatic soap opera coverage of each and every tragedy that comes along?
No, Fitzie, my darling… you are alone… alone… ALONE!
Perhaps you are just so cynical at this point in your life that any journalist (and I’ll use that word loosely) who shows some amount of emotion in the face of horror appears to you to be hamming it up.
I like that she’s not a robot or hard-bitten. I think she’s actually sincere… but hey, I haven’t been painted by the brush of cynicism just yet… But I live in L.A…. I’m sure my time will come.
You’re not the only one. That was my chief complaint about Ann @ Today. Overly dramatic says it well, the only thing I would add is phony overly dramatic. Her Barnum & Bailey manner of introduction and interviews turns my stomach. It’s not for news television.
Not just you – that’s why they let her go. Of course, they did it in the worst way possible, which is why many viewers are upset. But if they took a minute to objectively look at Ann’s on-air performance, they’d remember why she was unsuccessful in the job to begin with.
This of course was a ploy by NBC to get more viewers now that the show is failing since they fired Ann! NBC’s press release said “Ann would be co-hosting with Savannah” but yet she was on maybe 30 minutes total.
Though I do thinks it’s important to point out that Ann Curry’s second hour of the Dateline Special on Friday was the most watched news program of the night.
Just the first of many proofs that NBC should not have let Ann go.
I miss her ‘compasionate’ reporting, approach. I will always ‘tune in’ to watch her, at her job.
I don’t watch the today show and no one should, if they cannot be honest and supportive of their own people, then they don’t care about anyone but money. Just like Miracle on 34th street, you either believe in your staff, or you are just a bunch of money grabbing selfish people. I believe in Ann, but I am not watching the Today show anymore
I miss Ann Curry ot it is great to see her on Dateline and reporting news stories
What a mess! This Savanah Guthrie is horrible. Less personality than a popcycle stick and not as likeable. When is this going to be corrected?
