Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage
Is it the right time to trot out a liberal superhero suffering from PTSD who’s hellbent on justice and revenge? The CW believes it is with the introduction of Arrow, based on the characters from the hugely popular DC Comics series Green Arrow, which will run Wednesdays at 8 PM beginning October 10. The new series’ TCA panel this morning featured producers Greg Bertlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg along with stars Stephen Amell and Katie Cassidy. The hour figures to give conservatives plenty of ammunition during this election season as it promotes a vigilante protagonist who likes to use weapons to “right the wrongs of his family and fight the ills of society” while embodying something of a populist agenda.
Kreisberg admitted his lead character’s liberalism (culled from that of the comic version of Green Arrow) is embedded in the DNA of the show. “People that Oliver (Amell) is targeting are the wealthy and the corrupt,” he said. “There are some echoes of the one-percenters and Occupy Wall Street within the show. He’ll have that sort of man-of-the-people, stick-up-for-the-little-guy aspect.” The pilot is a mixture of great athleticism and seeming random violence driven by the lead character. But Guggenheim defended Arrow‘s mayhem as having a purpose behind it — a sensitive subject in the wake of the recent Aurora, Colo, movie shooting. “I think it’s incredibly important to be responsible, first and foremost,” he believes, “because obviously the violence in our culture is seeping into the real world in incredibly tragic ways. When Aurora happened it came up in the writers room of course, because we’re all human beings and it was a terrible tragedy. I think we all need to be responsible and portray violence in a responsible way.” Is it possible to be responsible when your hero likes to hunt people down in a vigilante fashion? Guggenheim thinks so, making the point that Arrow “has the opportunity to explore the consequences of violence that maybe other shows cannot — because we’ll be looking at all facets of vigilantism and taking the law into your own hands.” (Photo: Get

Bet this dreck doesn’t last 5 episodes.
The PoS that was Smallville lasted a decade, I’m sure this will do just as well.
That “POS” was one of the best retellings of the Superman mythos one could’ve hoped for. But obviously, you’re more a cultural expert than anyone else…
Even Smallville’s worst episode was 100 times better than anything on The Cape. And that is what I fear the Arrow is looking like. The return of THE CAPE failure POS. We can hope for the best, but let’s get real. THE CAPE ARROW looms large.
Why dont you shut up smallville fans, not interested?, then hit the road. Arrow is going to be better in some ways than Smallville, its way grittier and darker, than just a Dawson creek with a superhero. It may not last as long as Smallville, but that doesn’t mean it wont be good ,Smallville was at its best during the first 3 seasons and went downhill, seaso 9 and 10 were a disgrace. I would rather have a short run that is great than long run that diminishes in quality and becomes a chore to watch.
Refresh my memory. Wasn’t THE CAPE sold as the “grittier and darker” superhero/Smallville show? How did that work out for ya? Good thing nobody behind THE CAPE failure POS is involved with ARROW, because that could have been disastrous. Unless you’re that one lone CAPE fan?! LOL. I kid. As if THE CAPE failure POS has a single fan.
So, when we get a new Robin Hood movie, are we going to get endless media talk about how the bandit of Sherwood is a proto-socialist violently redistributing a nation’s wealth?
Robin Hood railed against the high tax, big government policies of the King enforced by the Sheriff of Nottingham. Robin was a bit of a tea partier.
Ha, somewhat. But, he also stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Obviously, that’s not a tea party idea. So, both sides can see something positive in robin of loxley.
Stupid move by Warner Brothers and DC Comics to put this character in the middle of a political firestorm. It will damage the character for years to come and the show will flop. Not a very smart way to manage your characters.
Will he steal from Bruce Wayne?
We saw this Occupy agenda and mayhem in Aurora last week. Next!
Wrong. We saw a disturbed man carry out a horrific act that is in no way representative of the Occupy movement or its participants.
You kinda want to elaborate on that? Aurora was a messed up idiot with no political ties, no matter how much both sides of the media want to think it is.
He should be targeting the writers.
Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) has long been one of comics most politically liberal characters. Mike Grell’s series “The Longbow Hunters” amped up the adult themes and led to more politics within the pages of GA.
It would be a whitewash for that not to be part of the character in a screen version.
So, Greg Berlanti is attacking the 1%? And who is he, some guy who works the night shift for minimum wage? The hypocrisy of liberal Hollywood knows no bounds. Why doesn’t he open the gates to his Beverly Hills mansion for his comrades in the Occupy movement? They can soil in his carpets and throw his Ruscha art collection into a bonfire…
That’s pretty much how he was portrayed on SMALLVILLE as well, so the only thing newsworthy is that it just happens to coincide with the current political clime.
I saw the pilot a few weeks ago and it was awesome! Having comic book writers actually writing on the show makes a huge difference. I wouldn’t get too caught up in the Liberalism of it all, as it is will be one of the most entertaining shows on television. CW will have a huge hit on its hands.
Considering the $$$ Berlanti gets paid for making garbage like Green Lantern, how is he not a member of the “wealthy and corrupt”? How many villains see themselves as villains? Are scumbags never poor?
How many flawed human beings are attempting to make life better based on partial data? (Most of us). Inevitably, people hurt themselves and other people, regardless of “good” intentions. Rich and poor are all misunderstood and stereotyped; there is no such thing as a flawless group of people.
Rather than rise above the lowest-common-denominator hypocrisy of his peers, Berlanti keeps shoveling muck rather than pursuing innovative compassion to distinguish his career.
Again, if he is going to target the corrupt 1%, wouldn’t he start with people at Time Warner, Tribune and Paramount, who as leaders of the CW are pushing for free broadcast TV to become Pay TV?
Or how about the cable networks that generate $20-billion of their $31-billion in sub fees by charging people who don’t watch the networks through channel bundling.
Or how about the production companies that ship their jobs to Canada and Asia?
Or perhaps the major studios, who have cut production deals with the Chinese government that provides the Communist Party in that country with censorship authority over the content produced?
Just asking. Rhetorically, of course, because we all know the real bad guys sell sandwiches.
Green Arrow from the makers of Green Lantern. can’t wait!
Thanks for the warning, I will avoid this far left propaganda and spread the news throughout the WebSphere to avoid this rubbish. It’s giving the finger to 80% of the country.
I can’t wait for “Arrow.” I think Stephen Amell is going to be HUGE!
Clearly the CW doesn’t want conservative and independent minded individuals watching this show, even though combined they make up the vast majority of American viewers. Very well. The CW will undoubtedly get its wish.
I was a huge GA fan as a kid, and am excited to see how they do this. A great character for a TV show.
‘Arrow’ should gun after the team behind Political Animals – they stole that hour from me.
Seriously, responsible violence? Spoken just like an idiot liberal. AND I’M A LIBERAL. What is responsible violence? Get your head out of your butt and stop feeeeeeeeeling. You can’t blame real violence on fictional violence. It’s not your responsibility to save sickos. Entertain us. Simply, entertain us. And that will be enough. But sadly, I don’t think that’s what you guys have in store for us.
Wow after reading the comments I realised there are tons of idiots posting here.
I am not a member of any political party. I’m not tethered to any political ideology. Nevertheless, I am going to watch Arrow.
