EXCLUSIVE: Could American Idol be going country with its next judge pick? I hear the veteran Fox reality series is seriously considering country star Brad Paisley for one of the vacated chairs on its judging panel. Bringing in a country star as an Idol judge appears logical since the show’s most successful winner to date, Carrie Underwood, is a country singer as are a number of other well-known Idol finalists — including last year’s winner Scotty McCreery and runner-up Lauren Alana. Paisley, who has performed on Idol, has a relationship with both Underwood and McCreery, recording hit Remind me with Underwood and bringing in McCreery to tour with him. Meanwhile, NBC’s The Voice has had success with a country star, Blake Shelton, as a mentor.
Fox is focusing on recruiting a new male judge after closing a deal with Mariah Carey to succeed Jennifer Lopez. Word is that original Idol judge and Carey co-manager Randy Jackson will likely come back, while Fox is also toying with the idea of a four-judge panel that was phased out when Lopez and Steven Tyler were signed two years ago. (Rivals The X Factor and The Voice both have four-person panels.) As for the vacancy on Fox’s other singing reality show, the hosting gig on The X Factor, the name that keeps popping up is Kelly Osbourne.

I’m am so sick of these rumors next we’ll hear that President Obama is being considered. Personally I’m tired of what AI is putting out to the press and blogs. Brad Paisley is Country why in the world would AI bring him on the panel.
Jo dee Messina!
Did you read the article? Some of their most successful winners (and finalists) are country singers. I’m not a fan of country music, but even I can tell that adding a well-known country singer would be a good idea for the show. Not only do they have a big, loyal fan base, it would differentiate them from The X Factor.
Cuz the country audience is very loyal and many Idols have found success in country music…Plus Brad has had a duet with Carrie Underwood and had Scotty McCreery on his tour. Last season, we had Skylar, before that of course, Scotty & Lauren…you had others with varying success including Kelly Pickler.
Personally I don’t see how this helps them with the younger demo unless they move Randy offf the judging panel and hire a 20 something (but please NOT MILEY)
The 4 judges thing is a bad idea…At least be diff from XF and TVoice….Plus its not necessary when the judges always agree. I hope these judges have opinions but artists always fear they’ll take a hit to their image and piss people off.
As for XF, NO NO NO NO NO NO NO To Kelly OSbourne. Don’t want to be mean so won’t write much…But she’s famous for being Ozzies daughter and losing weight on DWTS…Shes still doing that ridiculous purple hair…and I thought we didn’t want more Brits on XF. Of cousre her mom was a judge on the UK show and now judges Simons AGT
Finally, a relevant singer with plenty of success and experience unlike some of the former American Idols’ names who have been tossed around. Brad Paisley would be a good addition to AI.
Blake Shelton hasn’t made the Voice a country singer competition–it’s an all-genre competition which AI should be. So why not have a judge in a different genre? They already spent big bucks on Mariah Carey though, so I wonder if they can afford Brad?
It’s not news FOX is interested in country music. The net capitalized on Underwood’s success a few years ago with a Christmas special hosted by the star, and two years ago launched its own fledgling version of a country music-themed awards show – the abysmal American Country Awards. (Brad and Carrie have of course co-hosted the actual Country Music Awards together for years on ABC.) So I can see AI and FOX considering a country artist, and Brad has the wit and gravitas to pull it off.
I think a country star on the panel will help their show since many of that category have been successful winners! Adam Lambert should be 3rd judge. The rumours of Randy Jackson being a mentor I hope are true if he is still a judge I will lose it, his non vocabulary and disgusting promotion of his ugly fashion and accessories make me hurl!!!

Kelly Osbourne as the host for X-Factor is very very bad.
I love love LOVE Brad Paisley, but I doubt he’d take the judging gig on American Idol. First of all, his career is red hot and he’s always on tour or recording an album, so he doesn’t need the show to revive his career like most judges do. Also, let’s not forget his making fun of Idol (and other reality shows) in his song “Celebrity”. He’d make a fantastic judge with his sense of humor, talent, and good looks, but I imagine this rumor will die out quickly. I’d start watching again if Brad was a judge. If they want someone country, they should pick up John Rich. He was great on Nashville Star as a judge and has no problem doing reality shows, having been on several.
For crying out loud…. NO ADAM LAMBERT…. EVER !!!
He was overrated and he DID NOT WIN. He hasn’t even had a #1 Hot 100 Billboard single. He doesn’t deserve to be a judge, PERIOD !!
Brad Paisley’s name being added is an actual pleasant surprise. I’m down with him joining the show.
It’s going to take these solid strides to help American Idol regain some lost ground.
Mariah Carey was an uber catch. She may be a diva but she earned her diva status. She has the voice, sales and an incredible tally of endless #1 songs and albums. Plus she has something that Jennifer Lopez NEVER had and that’s called TALENT !!!
Adam is a great performer, has the vocal chops and stage experience, and is very smart and articulate. The judges seat will only enhance his music career…have you heard his new album? Great pop record…he deserves more attention.
Brad would
be GREAT! He has a sense of
humor which they will NEED badly!
I think Randy will have respect for Brad but i’m not sure how
Mariah and Brad will mix.
Maybe don’t put Mariah in the middle of the guys!!??
For crying out loud…. YES TO ADAM LAMBERT…. He was the most talented contestant EVER on that show.
Country judge on idol – boring.
I don’t know about Mariah Carey;is she even relevant anymore? She is super talented – lovely voice. Don’t know if the younger audience will connect with her. IDK, Jennifer Lopez was washed up and she seem to start-kick her career again. So maybe. I know it will be interesting b/c Mariah is such a Diva.
If they’re going to hire an ex-contestant, why on earth would they choose one who’s had no real success to speak of on the American pop charts (i.e., Lamebert)? Pick one who’s been around a while & actually sold some records (e.g., Clarkson, Underwood, Daughtry, Aiken).
I don’t listen to country music, so I’ll have to trust the opinions of others on Paisley’s draw. I do think that moving Randy aka for you for me for you, to another role on the show would be wise and put Lambert on the judging panel (or have a 4th judge if Jackson must stay). Lambert’s articulate, honest but not cruel and without a doubt a gifted singer. Just as importantly, he knows how to entertain and could certainly help liven up a show that has become increasingly dull. One thing for sure, he’d generate the water cooler talk again which has been sorely lacking.
The problem is, Brad Paisley doesn’t help Idol’s current demographics issue. And the show airs internationally, most of the viewers have no idea who he is. He will not bring any young fans to the show.
Like Lambert or not, he gets the press talking, which is something Idol desperately needs again. He’s been there and has proven to be a good mentor and is smart and articulate.
If Idol insists on copying The Voice, a Blake/Mariah/Adam panel would work. But one thing is for sure, Randy must take another role. His critiques are not helpful and he’s Mariah’s manager, he’d never disagree with her, making him more useless than ever.
Brad Paisley would be a great choice. He will be the right balance between Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey.
To Obvi: You are correct that Adam hasn’t had a #1 Hot 100 Billboard hit; but he has done BETTER THAN THAT. He has had a #1 Top 200 album instead. His fans love the entire album, not just one song! He hasn’t had a #1 hit because the radio won’t play his songs. He is however, an international star. The other countries recognize what a talent he is. America is still homophobic but is coming around (at least some people are LOL). He would be a great judge because he is intelligent and very articulate (like some others, I am tired of Randy’s dawg and pitchy), he is honest to a fault, and most of all, he knows what it is like to be judged and knows how to give criticism nicely. He was a great judge on Project Runway and a children’s television singing competition also. I forgot the name of that summer show.
YES! YES! YES! Brad would be fantastic as a judge if he can fit it in his schedule… but what about Garth Brooks? Oh yea…now he has the time, he has the talent, he has the wit! What do y’all think about him?
John Rich would make an excellent addition to the panel.
Brad Paisley would be a bad choice. The only judge I want is Adam Lambert. Adam is one of the best loved American Idol alumnus ever and he is the change the show needs.
