EXCLUSIVE: America’s most famous blended TV family is eyeing a comeback. CBS is developing a new take on the cult comedy The Brady Bunch, co-developed and executive produced by Vince Vaughn. The multi-camera comedy project, which has received a script order, will be produced by CBS TV Studios.
The original sitcom, created by Sherwood Schwartz and starring Robert Reed and Florence Henderson, ran on ABC from 1969-1974. It centered on Mike Brady (Reed), a widowed architect with three sons, Greg, Peter and Bobby, who marries Carol Ann Martin (Henderson), a single mother with three daughters, Marcia, Jan and Cindy.
On the new next-generation Brady Bunch, written by Mike Mariano (Raising Hope, My Name Is Earl), a divorced Bobby Brady, with children of his own, is remarried to a woman who also has kids, and together they also share a child. In addition, their ex-spouses are still part of their lives. The new setup reflects the evolution of family dynamics over the past four decades. Back in 1969, Schwartz wanted Carol to be a divorcée but the network refused, so the end of her first marriage was never addressed.
I hear Vaughn came up with the idea for the new Brady Bunch and teamed with Mariano. Mariano and Lloyd Schwartz, son of the late Sherwood Schwartz, will executive produce the CBS project along with Vaughn, Victoria Vaughn and Peter Billingsley through Vince Vaughn’s Wild West Picture Show Prods.
CBS TV Studios has the rights to the original series as it was produced by its predecessor Paramount Television. The studio has a lot of experience successfully reviving old series. There are three reboots now on the air now: CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and the CW’s 90210 and Beauty And The Beast — all of them produced by CBS TV Studios.
The Brady Bunch signals a return to the traditional family comedy arena for CBS, which gradually moved away from it following the end of Everybody Loves Raymond and The King Of Queens in favor of buddy/relationship comedies like Two And A Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and 2 Broke Girls. As for classic comedies, the network last year took a stab at remaking another 1960s series, Bewitched.
If the contemporary remake goes forward, CBS will likely bring back The Brady Bunch‘s popular theme song tweaked for the 21st century the way CBS modernized the signature theme music of Hawaii Five-0 for the reboot. (See title sequences from all seasons of The Brady Bunch below).
The Brady Bunch has spawned spinoffs, TV movie reunions, a musical and a successful movie parody franchise starring Shelley Long. One of the TV movies, the 1988 A Very Brady Christmas, led to the short-lived 1990 CBS series The Bradys, which followed the extended Brady family some 15 years after the events in The Brady Bunch. It featured most of the original cast.
Wild West Picture Show has stepped TV efforts over the past couple of years — the company has a series on the air, TBS’ Sullivan & Son, which had a solid second-week showing. Vaughn and Mariano are repped by CAA.

This should be huge.
I assume this is a joke.
Bobby was the loser of the group and this show is DOA.
You obviously know nothing about The Brady Bunch. Jan was the loser of the group. And it wasn’t even close!
What did people expect. Vince Vaughn is stuck in his past (same old, same old)so what’s left? Dig up the past. This just proves “he’s way out of touch” by producing another stupid ripoff. Nothing original anymore? Guess not.
Goodness, I hope so!
Just when you thought it was safe . . .
NO! Can’t we just leave somethings alone? WHY do we need to reboot?
we “need it” because we are so deprived of talent and imagination on television that we have to rape the past for ideas…..
Make Glee a liitle bit more wholesome and uplifting and it would have been perfect for ABC in the 1970s between Happy Days and Brady Bunch.
What was the point of this comment?
Don’t you remember Fame, thats were Glee came from. It was on in the 80′s.They had daning and singing with kids.
We can use more family comedies. ABC has hits with modern family and the hugely rated the middle, one of the shows thats always dvred in my house
I sincerely hope Anna Faris is a series lead.
That would actually interested…
Whoa. I don’t know how to feel about this. I LOVE the spoof movies of the Bradys but would this be a spoof? Asking anyone to take this as a serious reboot at this point would, in itself, be laughable.
This will get cancelled within the first 5 episodes.
no. just no.
even the original brady bunch was single camera.
original ideas would be better.
Too bad no one in this town can come up with an original idea.
People have them, it’s just no one is buying them.
WHY???
vaughn came up with the idea? bobby has kids. wow great idea.
would they have the real brady’s in there too? florence henderson as gramma?
Does reboot mean no Gary Cole?
Vince Vaughn should be rebooting The Beverly Hillbillies. Then, he could cast himself as Jethro, and have a part which currently reflects his acting skills and portfolio of films. Plus, he gets dual salaries.
And, after all, if there is one thing Vince Vaughn has proven he can do…it is to play the same character over and over and over.
Oh well…The Brady Bunch without Vince in it will just have to do.
These stories feel like a certain kind of hideous torture.
Hey, FTCS. Vince and Acting Skills in same “comment”? Being Vince is being Vince, not acting. “Acting” takes talent. Being yourself is not acting. Well, maybe this is a sign he’s making a career change; hope so but this is a bad start.
‘Cult comedy?’ I seem to remember that this was a big, hit show back in the day …
“Cult” just makes it sound cool and different.
That this is the first major series reboot is not entirely accurate. In 1990, the was an hour-long “dramedy” format called “The Bradys” (with all original cast members but Maureen McCormick) that only lasted for six episodes.
Don’t forget The Brady Brides.
1) This can only work if any characters from the original are played by the original actor.
2) I would consider it more of a continuation than a reboot, ala TNT’s Dallas.
3) RE: There are three reboots now on the air now… Um, eauty and the Beast isn’t on air now. It won’t premiere until fall.
Nothing that you just said makes any sense. All of the continuations with the original cast members of the Brady Bunch were a disaster (The Bradys, The Brady Brides, etc.) Years later, people will care even less to see a bunch of has-beens desperately trying to cash in yet again on something that was over for them 40 years ago.
The only way this could work is if it was either a complete spoof or not nearly as wholesome as the original was back in the 70s.
Beauty*
Maybe CBS felt sorry for how ABC and NBC were doing and decided to even the competition a bit. Just to make it interesting.
I liked it better the second time when it was called Step by Step. And the third time when it was called All of Us.
Amen.
Sorry, I meant themost underrated show The Middle
Considering all of the industry’s reboots, remakes, sequels… This one I did NOT see coming. Wow… SMH
Let me guess the cast: Nathan Kress, Carlie Rae Jepsen, Selena Gomez…
I will watch the remake!
Wait, so this multi-cam? So it will be even MORE broad than the original??
Oy vey.
Garbage. Vaughn is a bloated no talent unfunny never was. With him attached this actually has LESS of a chance at success.
I hope they really bring it to this decade and make Alice a full-blown lesbian.
F you pal.
Alice never stopped talking about Sam and his meat. No way she was a lesbian. Her cousin Emma on the other hand . . .
