Ray Richmond contributes to Deadline’s TV coverage.
FX‘s presentation for TCA, hyping his new long-run comedy Anger Management and looking appropriately ready for the weekend in shorts, sockless black shoes and button shirt.
He said that what he’s doing now is more fun than being loaded and fighting with Chuck Lorre, and that it’s great to be back living life and working again. When asked how his life is different now, his costar Selma Blair took that as her cue to place his hand on her belly and say, “We have an announcement.” Recovering from that, Sheen said, “It was a crazy time, like a crazy dream, a runaway train I couldn’t get off of. I learned a lot from that time.” What did he learn? “Don’t go on the road for 31 days in 23 cities with no act.” But ultimately, Sheen understands that chaos may simply be his fate. “I can wish every minute for a very simple life … But I don’t look at what (happens in my life) as chaos but challenges,” he stresses. “Things have to be dealt with in the moment. My interpretation of fun is not always the right choice.”

Personal issues aside, Sheen said he’s having a great time on Anger Management, so much so that he’s looking forward to getting renewed for the back 90. “I feel like we’ve just scratched the surface, barely” in terms of material, he said. Not that it’s easy. Showrunner Bruce Helford admitted that the show’s accelerated production schedule allows no time for rehearsal, but said all the performers got into their characters quickly. “It’s a whole different animal,” Sheen admitted. “There’s no time to overthink it. Sometimes that’s OK, sometimes it isn’t.” But what’s really been energizing for Sheen, Helford suggested, is that he has the voice on Anger Management that he completely lacked on Two And A Half Men. “He didn’t really have a voice on that show or much creative input,” Helford said. “The way I’ve always worked is, we’re all truly partners, we hold hands, we share responsibility and blame for all things. We’re in this together. We think that Charlie;’s gotten his creative juices flowing and looks forward to going to work, as we all do. To have a say in what you’re doing and control of your destiny makes all the difference. This is a very freeing experience. FX truly understands how to work with talent.”
At the same time, Helford maintained that it’s a tough grind producing television this way. “It isn’t easier for anybody, the writers or the actors,” he said. “It’s more of a gut experience, but at the same time a more natural and spontaneous experience.”

Anyone else notice the giant middle finger directed at Chuck Lorre? So happy for Charlie! Anger Management with it’s infinitely better cast is primed to make an even stronger run than Two and a Half Men. Love it!
Well it proves Charlie wrong, so the finger could end up at him? He claimed the success of 2 and a half was due to him, while here they are claiming he had little voice in it, so little influence, so it wasnt him. He has done many things and in decades, 2 and a half is among his few major successes, and now we hear he had little to do himself, creatively speaking. If cast alone can do a difference, nor selma or sheen have proved it, I do love Selma Blair, but it is hard to say this new project will make a stronger run than 2 and a half (a show i ve never loved)
I think this new show is going to be better even if given time I like the sober with it Charlie he’s just really fun and, I didn’t like the guy that was always the playboy after awhile you wanted more and, this show I think is showing more and a happier Charlie. Which I think people are going to go for more and more. Happy Charlie is so much fun ! Cast is great I think it’s only scratch the surface and will be like Seinfeld where you can’t get enough ! I don’t even watch 2 1/2 men he was the spark. But in this show he’s a very happy spark and it will get better and better he has natural wit when he’s happy and, I think he’s at a much happier part in his life!
This is one of the more boring TV shows I’ve ever watched. And that’s not hyperbole. I may have laughed once in the 3 episodes I endured. Charlie is REALLY bad, his wife is a bad actress, Selma Blair, endurable but barely. And the dialogue is just mundane…
i also think it’s kind of bland but i give multicams more time to evolve. i have noticed it is getting a little funnier. the denise richards one actually made me laugh out loud a few times.
single camera might have been a better way to go… more fluid in changing locations… not stuck in the group setting.
and are we stuck with these group members for the whole run or will they add new faces to the group. that would change things up.
still better than the badness that 2 1/2 men was last season. that was painful. anger is just dull.
Totally disagree with you!
AM will be gone after next season. It’s a bad, bad show. I think I know what Charlie’s next project will be: “Keeping up with The Sheeniac!” on A&E.
It;s interesting how people simply do not read completely the story. Anger Management may get a 90 episode renewal which will mean 4 more years of shows. That means there is no way for it to be gone after next season. Plus, did you ever try to view the show simply on its merits and potential rather than because of the “Sheeniac” as you say?
I love the concept and, think your totally wrong I think it’s going to get better and better cast is great!
I disagree with some posters here (seem more bitter than anything else by the way..not a good look) i find this show alright at the beginning but it is improving every week, the cast has great chemistry, the writing is funnier now..well i am happy to watch it and can’t wait for these 90 episodes. Yep i said it.
Totally agree! This show is funny, not depressing at all, cast is great and, Charlie happy which is so much fun I think he has a natural love for people and, I love him in it!
I consider myself pretty snobby about comedy. I think 2-1/2 Men was and still is wretched. But I laugh out loud at every episode of AM. I find it dangerous, witty, sexy, edgy, and smart. Will it cure cancer? No. But it won’t cause it either — like most sit coms. I also love Shawnee Smith’s chemistry with Charlie.
The show is getting better and funnier. it is improving every week.. I loved most especially the episode with his ex-wife, both of them are good together. I hope she does more episodes.I am going to be really excited if it stays on the air. Charlie Sheen is a really good actor. A class act. His talent should be judged by the way his lives his personal life.
Sheen acting all crazy was more fun! He should just have his own reality show! Anger Management is the same old crap!
charlie sheen was the best on two half men. they should realy bring him back some howe every one wants him back
