That kid sounds like a chipmunk but looks like an adult. Hello, goodbye whoever u r.
Im sorry but that main actor is terrible. Another fail for surf films. Someday an authentic surf film will come out.
How more authentic can you get, this is a true story of Jay Moriarty who surfed those 40+ foot high waves at Mavericks at the age of 16. World class surfers have lost their lives surfing Mavericks. Jay became a surfing legend only to die at 23 doing a free drive accident.
The movie is a family film and I think it looks like Curtis Hanson has done a great job bringing Jay’s story to the big screen. I’m looking forward to seeing this film.
I guarantee if Jay Moriarty was alive today and saw that trailer he would be embarrassed and would not want to be portrayed that way. Jay was a great guy who left this earth far too early. He wasn’t a popcorn bubble gum half ass version wannabe surfer actor. Yes, it may be based on a true story- but it doesn’t mean its accurate. Also Gerard surfs like a kook.
Have fun seeing the movie in a theater full of 12 year olds
Amazing that you can tell all this from a :30 second trailer… maybe you should think about day trading??
Yo “Truth”, I know you bro!! You’re that really good, boogie-boarding, day-player from West Covina! Good posts dude, right on! And hope that authentic surf script that you’ve been talking about for years is coming along well!!
Was he a friend of yours?
So, someone is going into the “boneyard”, huh?
Kid actually looks hauntingly like the real life kid (Jay Moriarty).
well that was disappointing
Aw man, this looks awful. I had the good fortune of reading the script a couple years back, and at the time thought it’d have made a great film. Of course, I wasn’t expecting it to get the MTV Films treatment. Guess I shouldn’t be surprised….
wow. Fox is in a serious tailspin… What happened to Curtis Hanson? From LA Confidential, Wonderboys and 8 Mile to THIS? And he produced Big Year? wow.
Citing 8 Mile as quality film making isnt a great way to make your point in my opinion…but ill agree that I didnt expect him to do something that includes a voice over saying “did you ever feel like you were meant for something bigger?” Cant get much more cliche than that.
I think this looks great… not LA Confidential great, of course. But then again Life of Pi doesn’t look as great as I would have thought. Maybe Curtis and Ang are on the down slide… or maybe it’s just that Fox’s marketing team is?
Regardless, I’ll see both!
Who the hell cast this kid ?
If this is the young actor from Cherry, boy’s pretty damn good (and pretty damn HOT!!!). Why so many haters out there???
Oooh – Gidget for the Millenials
Were you a friend of Moriarty?
massively disappointed by this trailer.
Casting should be fired!!! This kid talks like the uber annoying Justin Timberlake and ever has the pube curly hair like him. #FAIL WHY? Couldn’t you find anyone better?
Mavericks is no joke. A movie about it, well… Despite this being a big metaphor ‘feel-good’ movie, didn’t expect the Disney treatment hinted at in the trailer. And surfer fans, don’t kid yourself and act all haughty. No matter what the trailer looks like, every surf fan will see this movie one way or another- at least to see footage of real big-wave pros stunt-double the wave. Yes, I used stunt-double as a verb. Second the Fox marketing comment above. Life of Pi trailer didn’t impress. This trailer tells me that this movie will be a guilty pleasure but probably nothing more. Regardless, the life and story of Jay Moriarty is a great one, at least people will be informed.
hahahaha every surfer will see this? what a joke. you don’t surf. i grew up near mavericks. you don’t know shit
No, the surfers aren’t going to show up for this one. Neither is the mainstream audience, I’m sad to say. I’m glad a bunch of surfers and watermen got paid to work on this but the problem is that they didn’t create a compelling storyline (soul surfer) and they didn’t dress it up enough to make it look like a fun day at the beach with hot chicks (blue crush.)
Nope, what they have is basically an after school special about a kid who wants a dad. That may be enough, but it doesn’t look like they found a way to tell the story.
Oh, and in terms of the surfing footage, who the fuck cut that trailer? It’s boring. Didn’t they have camera in more interesting places that the wide shot stuff? And they didn’t even use the better angle from when they almost lost the Huligirl (whatever the boat name is), the shot from inside shows how close it was and gives better perspective on the size of the surf. Too bad.
Of course, maybe the movie is really great, and the trailer is just a total failure.
Agreed. Nobody wants to see a Hollywood watered-down (pun intended) version of surfing. Can’t you just hear the pitch? “It’s ‘Karate Kid,’ but with surfing!”
There’s another surf flick on the horizon with Sam Worthington, hopefully it’s a lot better.
Shame that Curtis Hanson has been reduced to a hack director. Gerard Butler as Mr Miyagi? This looks terrible
Love surf movies good or bad. Looking forward to this.
Truth, Vin… Do your research about the subject of the film. If you don’t appreciate the authenticity of one of the most beloved surfers in recent history, how do you expect to judge the film? This film was shot in Santa Cruz (where Jay grew up and surfed) and real surf pros shot the surf sequences at Mavericks. Before you smear your negativity, consider this.

I’ll rent this and turn off the volume. Guess Curtis has to work like the rest of us.
