Speaking on behalf of the cast and crew of The Dark Knight Rises, I would like to express our profound sorrow at the senseless tragedy that has befallen the entire Aurora community. I would not presume to know anything about the victims of the shooting but that they were there last night to watch a movie. I believe movies are one of the great American art forms and the shared experience of watching a story unfold on screen is an important and joyful pastime. The movie theatre is my home, and the idea that someone would violate that innocent and hopeful place in such an unbearably savage way is devastating to me. Nothing any of us can say could ever adequately express our feelings for the innocent victims of this appalling crime, but our thoughts are with them and their families.

Nolan is a class act.
Thanks Mr Nolan by the words. From Spain. Condolences to all family victims. And Viva el cine, Viva los moviegoers!Yeah the movie theatre is for me like a home. Down NRA!Up Chris!
Thank you Christopher for speaking from your heart. Most of us that work in the Entertainment industry are motivated and inspired by the Movies since back when we were kids. I know I still am. It is the most innocent of events going to the movies…first date / matinee with the kids / etc. This is truly innocence lost for many people.
DISCLAIMER:
Someone PLEASE DELETE most of these moronic insensitive UNRELATED comments so Christopher’s statement can stand strong (…”blood money” rick? really? you obviously do not have 2 brain cells to rub together, bloody pillock).
Nolan made Batman ultra dark, realistic and violent. A nutjob would be much less likely to have committed such an act with a more cartoony Batman movie. Nolan is an intelligent man and it must weigh heavily on his conscious that he turned the Batman franchise into a despicable spectacle of violence and insanity.
As sad and Tragic as this Is ! James Holmes is nothing more than a domestic terrorist. No different than the ones you hear about in Iraq or Afghanistan. WE just think this doesn’t happen in the U.S. It had nothing to do with the film ! This happens everyday over seas. Those people have? family’s also. WE just think the U.S. is the Utopia where bad things dont happen ! its very Tragic and unfortunate and Hopefully James Holmes will Die in prison
Everyone always blames the gun companies and sellers. The guns that were used didn’t go off by themselves, they have no minds to decide to shoot or not to shoot. The companies didn’t push some magic button to make them go boom. They just make a product that can be, if used properly and intelligently, a useful tool and to save lives and minimize potential loss of life. If used improperly they can cause major carnage like this. The man made the decision to pull he trigger, the firearms had no choice but to obey. The evil here is the person that pulled the trigger, he is to blame and maybe the person who gave him the firearms, but there are to many scenarios for that to immediately assign blame to that person. He could of very easly driven his car through the people as they lined up outside. Would you request blood money from the car company? The dealer or individual that sold it to him? No, because a car doesn’t just drive it’s self. He could of used a knife or a bat too, the list goes on and on. And yes, a gun is a weapon and a deadly one at that, but it’s the user that is more dangerous if they are willing to kill with no remorse. So let’s blame the shit bag that shot all of the innocent people not the tools that were used or the companies that make them.
Guns don’t have “magic buttons that set themselves” off as you say….but please tell me how an ASSAULT rifle can be used intelligently to SAVE lives. It is a gun made for mass slaughter and it is sold over the counter to anyone who doesn’t have a criminal record. Don’t feign surprise when some wacko who flew under the radar uses it for its ONLY intended purpose.
It’s the same with those who defended extended clips in handguns after the massacre in Tucson last year. It may be the individual, but is there a reason to equip them with weapons and applications that exist solely so as to maximize the carnage and death? I think not.

These are “words” designed to force specific emotional responses in people. It should not be part of the discussion. There is a difference between a semi-automatic rifle and a fully automatic “ASSAULT” rifle. Ordinary citizens cannot buy fully automatic (or even selector switch enabling) machine (or, as you want to scream, “ASSAULT” ) guns.
Furthermore, these .223 caliber rifles are designed specifically NOT to kill. They are designed to wound. That’s why the UN Treaty specifically names that particular cartridge and the 308.
I wish it were possible to actually discuss these things without emotional distortions from using inappropriate words. I suspect that we could all agree that the way to stop these broken people from such heinous activity would be to hang the perpetrator publicly and within hours. There would be no weird people writing letters to Charles Manson.
I forgot to add that a .223 rifle is not legal to hunt Big Game in New Mexico (and I suspect, Colorado.) So, it was not an “ASSAULT” rifle and it was not a “Hunting” rifle. You have to eliminate those “Straw Men” from your responses. They just make you look Stupid.
The tragedy is horrible, but arms control is not the answer. Thats like saying “arms providers are accomplices to crimes”….. well “spoons made me fat”…. how much sense does that make. People need to take responsible for their own actions.
Or maybe their insurance can take care if the bills after their copay of course. And maybe gun manufacturers should give everyone a pistol so that no one has a competitive advantage.
Short, but very tasteful and sympathetic. Well said, nolan. Well said.
The actors, nor Nolan, owe nothing to the victims. It is no ones fault but the killers. To think that rhe victims would sue someone is stupid. How can they blame anyone that that hasn’t done anything. All it is is fucking greed.
Um, he could have just as easily obtained those weapons illegally. Fuck you and that gun controll bullshit. They died because they didn’t have anything to defend themselves because of assholes like you.
RIGHT! EXACTLY! You hit the nail on the head!
class move by nolan. could have easily said “not my problem.” but decided to take the opportunity to get involved and try and do some good. he is an example for the right direction of the entertainment business.
It makes no sense to blame a movie, especially one that focuses so much on heroic deeds. If you’re seriously suggesting that that guy would have never thought of killing people if there was no such thing as violent movies then you’re pretty naive.
Most of your comments have absolutely NOTHING to do with what happened. Why don’t we stay on topic? There’s always someone who says the wrong shit, and then these other people jump on him and give them attention.
No, not the people that sold the guns, you moron. This is one persons fault, and one persons fault only. Don’t let this p.o.s. off the hook by giving him some one else to blame.
when is the MPAA going to start rating these movies with violence rated R? A teen movie with even talk of sex is rated R but a movie with extreme violence PG-13? I don’t get it.
You do realize the movie had NOTHING to do with what happened right? he didn’t even stick around to watch the freaking movie. He picked THIS movie on THAT night becuase it would have the MOST people and make the most impact. He was a sociopath looking for the most attention.
Bottom line to me is the fact. That all the criminals, drug dealers, pretty much all the bad guys are the ones that have the guns. And the people that don’t. The good guys the good innocent people are the ones that end up paying for it. I have a permit to carry a gun. I’m from Texas. And I can tell you that gun control wouldn’t help. I think if we allow more “good guys” more life’s could be saved. What do ya’ll think?
My deepest condolance to the victims and their family. So sad to hear such tragedy could struck the community of aurora .
I have read the comments that many have written. Many want to blame everyone from Chris Nolan to the kid who took the ticket at the door. I will never forgot what a young man who came to the USA for the first time on business from England. We took him and a companion to many places as we come from New England and wanted to share some of our history. What he said to me was,”Your country is so violent”. I said that we were not any different than other countries including your own. He said that England was around for longer than we were and still their police do not carry guns. I am not pushing for gun control. The theme of the NRA is that we have a right to bear arms and that many Americans buy guns to protect themselves and the Constitution gives them the right. I guess the young man is correct as we still think the “British are coming”
Why does anyone need a gun like the several that he had? There is literally no reason to own a gun like that unless you are going to kill someone. So yeah, i think gun control s the answer.
I aso think it was a nice sentiment. Who cares if lawyers read it first? Doesnt make it less real.
When a one man wrecking machine decides to do this on his own it’s hard to catch. We don’t have “precrime” teams like in that futuristic movie with Tom Cruise. If he doesn’t tell anyone else and he isn’t on the radar there is nothing we can do but react when it happens. It’s sad but true. I feel for the families and the pain on Amber Medek’s face is very raw in her pictures. My heart breaks for you Amber. I can’t imagine. The finger pointing solves nothing. We need to help everyone heal instead of drumming up more drama! He had full bullet resistant armor on by the way folks. More bullets flying in that chaos by people that THINK they know how to handle a gun may have increased casualties and injuries. So..unspeakable.
“An armed society is a polite society.” – Robert Heinlein
You don’t need a gun to kill humans like this event. You just need a misguided idea of reality. I will find this soul in the afterlife, and invoke justice.
I’ve always seen the specialized weapons you describe as being a result of a mixture of competition and military contracts. Obviously a lot of rifles and other assault weaponry is developed for use by the military, and the manufacturers took the next step and made them available to the public as well. The rest are often designed to be “better than the rest,” not because it’s necessary, but because the nature of a capitalist economy is to outdo your competition in order to get business.
If you’re talking specifically about the ammo capacity, I think that kind of falls under the military side of things. There really isn’t a reason for a civilian to own expanded magazines, and I can see how it would make sense to limit/ban their sale.
The only problem I have with your reasoning is that you believe guns are only intended for self defense, which is not the case. By that reasoning, we should ban sports/muscle/rare cars because car’s only purpose is for transport.
Just like people collect rare/antique cars, lots of people like to collect cool/old firearms. A lot of people just enjoy shooting as well. They don’t need a robber or rapist to shoot at, they just want to shoot at targets for the sake of shooting, whether it be to inprove their marksmanship or to release stress.
That being said, I agree with you about the mental disorders. There’s really no other explanation for such a heinous act. And gun regulation most likely wouldn’t have helped at all, just like in most cases.
Correct, I lived in tucson az all of my life, recently, 2 people have attempted to go gunning at innocent people. First, a man, drives around town firing randomly, and was forced to go up mt. Lemmon hw.(out of town) due to both police, and citizens being armed against him. Second would be the more well known gabrielle giffords shooting, where he wasnt able to even reload due to people both drawing guns, and attacking him with hand to hand combat. Making gun laws stricter simply hinders the ability of normal people to defend themselves against people who WILL get their hands on a gun regardless of laws.
