EXCLUSIVE: While Disney is at Comic-Con today to unveil some details on its Sam Raimi-directed Oz: The Great And Powerful, Universal is finally moving forward with its screen adaptation of the cash cow musical Wicked. I’m told that the studio is courting Stephen Daldry to direct the film, and I’m optimistic that he’ll make a deal. At the same time, Jon Favreau is in negotiations to direct Jersey Boys. Both Wicked and Jersey Boys are among the top-grossing Broadway musicals on a weekly basis.

Favreau has been the rumored front runner for some time to helm Jersey Boys, but Daldry is a surprise. Universal and the musical’s producer Marc Platt have been meeting with helmers since last year, as this was one of the most coveted gigs to come along in a long time. Wicked, a Wizard of Oz prequel, is based on the Gregory Maguire novel Wicked: The Life And Times Of The Wicked Witch Of The West and focuses on the early relationship between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, a green-skinned beauty before she ended up flying on a broomstick. Wicked began as a movie development project with Platt and Universal, before they changed course and took it to the stage first. It was an immediate sensation, quickly recouping its $14 million capitalization in 2004 and becoming one of the biggest-grossing tuners of all time, with the Broadway show and eight touring companies. The Broadway musical routinely tops the weekly gross charts — $1.4 million per week is average, but the musical has broken the $2 million mark more than once. The musical shows no signs of winding down and its global following has Universal feeling this could be another Mamma Mia!, which became one of the studio’s highest-grossing global films ever.
Daldry most recently helmed Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close, and before that The Reader and The Hours. He won a Tony for directing An Inspector Calls.
Favreau, meanwhile, revisits that period male bonding territory that marked his early career with Swingers. John Logan has written the latest draft of the script for Jersey Boys: The Story Of Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons after book writers Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice wrote the script. That project has been a high priority since it was acquired by GK Films’ Graham King and Tim Headington, who are producing with Frankie Valli and Bob Gaudio serving as executive producers. It is anticipated that the project will be produced in partnership with Columbia Pictures, with Columbia handling worldwide distribution of the project except for some international territories that GK may potentially sell. GK spent millions to get the property, which was chased by every studio.
Favreau helmed two Iron Man films before helming Cowboys & Aliens. He’s also aligned to The Magic Kingdom, a potential family tentpole for Disney.
The play tells the story of how Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi went from blue-collar wrong side of the track origins to become an American pop sensation, selling 175 million records worldwide before they were 30 years old. The play has done over $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales since its 2005 Broadway opening, when it was directed by Des McAnuff and produced by Dodger Theatricals. It won four Tonys, including Best Musical and the cast album won the Grammy. When it transplanted to London, Jersey Boys won the 2009 Olivier Award for Best Musical.

I really wish they would do rob reiner’s Next to Normal with annette bening
Jake, I loved “Next to Normal”,but Annette Bening cannot sing.
YES.
OMG I totally agree! I loved ‘Next to Normal’ and think it would make a fantastic movie musical. Even just as a movie without the music it would be so incredibly interesting.
I’m surprised it’s taking Wicked so long to come together, since it debuted on Broadway almost a decade ago. Movies like Hairspray and The Producers were released only four or five years after debuting on Broadway, and Wicked always looked to have the potential to be a way bigger blockbuster than pretty much any other Broadway show of the past couple decades.
They didn’t want to shoot Wicked out in theaters too quickly while it’s still making so much money on Broadway and in its touring companies. People may opt to pay 12.00 to see the movie rather than 135.00 for an orchestra seat so they’re taking their time with it.
I wonder if that’s really a concern, as Phantom of the Opera and Chicago are both still going strong. The Producers eventually closed, but that can’t be because of the movie since no one saw that movie lol.
The stage Phantom debuted in London in 1986, Broadway in 1988 — the film didn’t come out until 2004. Les Miserables debuted a year before Phantom on both continents, and we’re just getting the film version now. Even a contemporary piece like Rent took 10 years.
Chicago’s success (after Moulin Rouge struck first) helped put musicals back on studio heads’ desks faster, but the trend is still for stage properties not to be translated before they’ve finished peaking as theatrical moneymakers. Wicked may be an exception as it is the last true perennial megahit that started out as a stage piece. The Book of Mormon is matching its grosses at the moment, but Parker/Stone have said in interviews that they have no interest in making a film veresion.
No, as I recall, Parker and Stone said they wanted to do a film, but not for a while.
OMG!!!!!! This is fantastic!!!! Sooooooooo excited!!!!!! And I agree with Jake, Next to Normal HAS to be a movie!!!!
The show has been making too much money to be adapted so quickly to film.
Don’t get your hopes up about Next To Normal on the big screen.
Jon Favreau to direct a musical is a sure way to make a disaster. His movies always feel clunky. I think the best person to direct Jersey Biys would be Martin Scorsese or Mike Nichols
Universal is becoming the studio of musicals. They have Lez Miz coming out this December and Streisand and SIlver’s Gypsy is supposedly starting to shoot in 2013.
I think he’s a terrible choice. Not a bad director, but I can’t see any reason to think he’d be able to pull this off. This is going to take someone who knows how to do BIG onscreen..AND be able to pace it-he’s a bad choice.
I’m talking about Daldry.
“Swingers” was not a period piece, it was set in the era in which it was shot, during the swing music/dancing revival of the ’90s. And Favreau didn’t direct it, he wrote and starred in it. But, you know, other than that…
i just wonder who they’re going to get to play glinda and elphaba? hollywood will take the least talented people, just because they think they’ll bring in box office and give them this biggest part. probably jennifer lopez and kate hudson will get the rolls with they way hollywood thinks. i’ve already seen previews for les miz and i’m not impressed with anne hathaway’s voice (or at least how i dreamed a dream is being interpreted). i’m holding out hope that hugh jackmand and russell crowe are going to save the film.
Wicked is a big musical to take on. It could go really badly or really great. I am a bit nervous for a movie remake.
I haven’t seen Jersey Boys so I have no opinion on that.
Next to Normal needs a movie ASAP! I loved everything about it. I just don’t know if it was enough of a hit. They tend to make movies out of Broadway Blockbusters “Rent” Phantom of the Opera” “Les Miserables” etc. Next to Normal recouped its cost, but wasn’t on Broadway very long.
I really wish Ryan Murphy were directing Wicked. And I want Lea Michele and Megan Hilty to star in it.
favreau is a turd of a choice clunky, pandering, sycophant filmaking…and he knows it. smart guy, but not a true creative bone in his body.
Ryan Murphy would be great for Wicked. That is a much better fit for him than the Normal Heart. Lea and Megan are good choices as well. Maybe Lea could then stop thinking of playing Louise to Streisand’s Rose.
Wicked Movie Cast:
Elphaba: Lea Michelle
Glinda: Amy Adams
Nessarose: Anne Hathaway
Madame Morable: Meryl Streep
The Wizard: Richard Gere
Fiyero: Aaron Tveit
Boq: Zac Efron
Nuff Said.
I don’t want all these mainstream celebs in Wicked. Lea also ‘longed’ to play a lead in Les Miz. I think Wicked should have someone who hasn’t had a Hollywood spotlight before. Kerry Ellis or Rachel Tucker as Elphaba. Louise Dearman, Dianne Pilkington or Megan Hilty as Glinda. Just NOT Lea.
My dream cast:
Elphie – Kerry Ellis
Glinda – Louise Dearman
Nessarose – Michelle Federe
Boq – Adam Pettigrew
Morrible – Carole Shelley
Wizard – Keith Bartett
Fiyero – Diego Boneta
No. The only actresses that should play the lead roles in Wicked are Idina Menzel and Kris Cheno. They are the best ones to playing these roles. They originated and put their personalities in them. Glinda and Elphie are made from Idina and Cheno
I would kill to see them there!
They are both amazing. Unfortunately they’re both too old to do the movie roles now.
