Breaking Bad is heading to Germany in the second episode of the new season, showrunner Vince Gilligan said today. Gilligan also told the Comic-Con crowd that audiences should expect more German accents than Spanish accents this upcoming season based on some financial deals that Walter White has made. He also said the White character finally does something that removes all sympathy for the character. “This season is all about winning and staying on top,” he added. “As we wind down to 16 episodes, we’re cranking it up,” said star Bryan Cranston. He also noted that Sunday’s opener is “not violent but intellectual.” His onscreen partner in crime Aaron Paul, whose
catchphrase of the opening episode “magnets, bitch” he revealed, described the new season as “eerie”. That wasn’t all the audience learned about the upcoming season. Two days before the Season 5 debut of AMC’s Breaking Bad, the crowd tonight at Comic-Con got a glimpse of what’s to come. If the gunplay in the short preview they showed in Ballroom 20 this evening is any indication, the opener might not be so violent but the new season of Breaking Bad is going to be very, very violent. Also new characters will be added, and the Skinny Pete character played by Charles Baker is coming back. The preview showed that Walter White’s cooking meth again and his wife Skylar is on board. And after an initial attempt at killing Walt for the death of Gus at the end of season four, Mike Ehrmantraut has joined him and Jesse Pinkman.

Lastly, there was a brief shot of Walter from inside the trunk of a car in what looked like a beard. That shot Cranston said was very revealing. Those snippets and clues got a cheer from the crowd but the appearance of the panel members brought a roar. It started with executive producer and showrunner Gilligan, followed by Anna Gunn, who plays Skylar, Betsy Brandt, R. J. Mitte, who plays
Walt and Skylar’s son, and Jonathan Banks who plays Mike. Dean Norris, who plays Hank, the DEA agent who is also Walt’s brother-in-law, came out in a black wig, studs and leather that looked more Game of Thrones than Breaking Bad.

Stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul who entered in their bright yellow cooking outfits and masks followed that. Of course, if you were looking for someone to really spill details and plots about what is going to happen as the show enters its final two seasons, this was not your panel. Gilligan did say that he would not kill off Paul’s Jesse, or at least not as originally planned before the actor was cast. “There’s hope,” quipped Cranston to big laughs. Banks wouldn’t reveal anything about the upcoming season. “No, cause Vince gave me a whole list of things I can’t talk about,” he said. Before taking questions from the audience, the cast and Gilligan joked that people should change to their cable company if they have Dish. The company has dumped AMC over a dispute over carriage fees. To counter the move, AMC has said it will stream Sunday’s season opener online.

Part of what works with the series is that you feel some sympathy for walter — sad to see that he does something really bad — although the ending of season 4 was a shocker.
ummm… Walter killed Jesse’s girlfriend and that was not something to be sympathetic about. Thos show works and the writing is great
Walt did NOT kill Jesse’s girlfriend. He just didn’t save her when he could have. Big difference.
Walt didn’t kill her. She killed herself.
Rewatch that episode. She was sleeping on her side. When Walt shakes Jesse, he disturbs her sleep and is then on her back. Thus Walt kills Jane. If he didn’t enter the apartment she would not have died. He is responsible for her death.
If she didn’t inject heroine, she would not have died.
If Walt had taken action, she wouldn’t have died. He took no action. He killed her.
Rationalization is awesome. And you and Walt would have a fine time sharing a beer together.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhh so pumped
Fascinating stuff… can’t wait.
Wow. As if I weren’t geared up enough to see the new season, this just kicked my anticipation into overdrive! Each season has been better than the last and the first season is AMAZING, so that’s saying a lot. I have complete faith in Vince Gilligan, Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and the rest of the crew that they will bring their A game this year. If only there were more shows like Breaking Bad, I might would actually start watching television again.
They will end up doing a 7th season. These 8 ep’s upcoming are the 5th season and next year’s 8 will be the 6th season. Sony and AMC will both realize they can get extra profit from an additional 8 or 10 ep’s. The fans will demand it and I hope it happens. This show is so great it deserves as many additional episodes as possible.
The main problem is the soap opera aspect that slows down so many episodes. Skylar’s affair with Ted was pure soap opera. Marie starting her shoplifting again was terrible soap opera. We could have had so many more scenes with Walt and Gus instead of the damn soapy drama which they do to appeal to women viewers.
I agree with you on the soap opera elements, particularly the frequently annoying female characters. I feel the same way about Dexter. Those scenes make the show drag, and the seasons waste episodes on fluff instead of the really interesting characters and story.
Well, they can’t hold a gun to Gilligan’s head and make him write the show. If he says he’s done, he’s done.
I tend to believe he has created the show he wanted to create and is telling the story he wanted to tell, in 5 seasons, just as the creators of The Shield did. Don’t hold your breath for more than these final 16 episodes of BB.
My biggest concern is, I didn’t see any of the show (though I knew it would be good) until a few months ago. Then I pretty much watched all of the episodes. The idea of having to wait a week to see the next episode of this season might just kill me
Yeah. I’ve also recently started watching 2 weeks ago and have been on binges every since. I can’t imagine myself waiting for a new episode every week.
I know someone who hadn’t watched the show until a week ago. He’s trying to get through all of the episodes before the 5th season premieres on Sunday night. Good luck to him.
I am amazed that Breaking Bad consistently does what a TV show is supposed to do: compel the viewer to come back to it each week. It took an offbeat premise and made it into great entertainment.
As for the female melodrama that bores some of the viewers, chalk it up to content. You need these characters to “break bad” as a measuring stick to what Walter is doing. Skyler and Marie are great; I would not mind them being melodramatic with the housework as long as I can see them!
I jumped out of my seat when Gus blew up. I can’t wait to see how far this show will set the bar again for television.
I hear you, I’m in the same boat. I got lucky that Season 4 was coming to video the same moment I finished Season 3. Waiting a whole year to see how this season/show ends is going to be torture. At least Gilligan is ending the show on top, something him and Chris Carter should have done with The X-Files.
One of my favorite shows of all time. Noticed that none of the comments refers to Saul Goodman, an amazing character if there ever was one. Better cal Saul!
I don’t think the two posters above fully understand television.
Excellent show. Excellent scripts and cast. On par with the Sopranos.
This show has dwarfed the Sopranos. Especially the cop out ending where we see Tony get killed via getting faded to black at the end. That was so weak. the writers don’t get that viewers don’t care about writers wanting to do that left brain bullshit. If u kill Tony S. We want to see a killing. So Breaking Bad is a monster on steroids compared to Sopranos.
Much of television, even good television, is in the end, pleasant distraction. And every so often something is created that breaks through, really takes hold and renews your faith in the whole ‘grab some ratings and sell commercials’ process that is commercial television. Vince Gilligan, Brian Cranston and all the rest who passionately throw their time and creativity into this one have truly earned a lasting place in the TV hall of fame. It’s an exceptional show, where each episode is something to savor.
