Two and a half months before Elementary premieres on CBS, the pilot screened to a packed ballroom here at Comic-Con and it was all about the woman. Lucy Liu to be specific. The actress and her casting as Joan Watson in the Sherlock Holmes modernization attracted a lot of attention when it was announced in February. But to today’s applauding Comic-Con crowd Liu, who plays a sober companion to the recovering addict Holmes, seemed as natural to
the Holmes iconography as the Facebook, cell phone records, drug addiction and New York Mets references in the pilot. It continued during the panel that followed. “We love you” cried out a fan at the back of the hall as Liu responded to an audience question concerning criticism about her casting. “I think the gender change creates a dynamic and chemistry that you don’t see in the films and the BBC series,” said Liu earlier to applause, “I’m not saying it’s romantic but it’s little bit of tingle.” Liu and Elementary’s Holmes, Jonny Lee Miller, were joined on the panel by executive producers Robert Doherty and Carl Beverly. “Lucy was hired because she’s a great actor,” said Beverly to big cheers. Doherty told the crowd that turning Watson into a woman was an essential part of his version of the detective but not to create a romance. “Holmes doesn’t’ quite get the fairer sex, so it made me wonder what would be more trying for Sherlock Holmes to live with a Watson who was a women, but it shouldn’t make a difference, it’s the bond between the two of them.” Elementary debuts on September 27th at 10 PM.

Amazing. Were they clapping because they thought “Elementary” was good TV, or clapping because they were in close proximity to two Hollywood stars and thus drove themselves into a fan frenzy?
^^^^ Exactly.
I still think changing Watson into a female just for the sake of some unresolved sexual tension is bad.
Almost as bad as that Jennifer Garner – Miss Marple clusterfuck that was going to happen.
Jennifer Garner as Miss Marple?
Really? Did hell freeze over and I missed the weather report?
My biggest complaint about “Elementary” is the whole bandwagon mentality of Hollywood. Can we PLEASE have original programming? I know it’s risky to try something new, but saying “OOOOOHHHH, there’s those new Sherlock movies and the British are doing it, so ….” I have no idea if the show will be good or not … will probably check it out … but the copycat aspect has colored my view.
No thanks. I’ve already seen House and The Mentalist. I don’t need to waste time watching their bastard child, Lucy or no Lucy.
Having seen the pilot, I think that it has the potential to be a great show. Liu as Watson seemed a perfect fit for this Holmes, and I was relieved that their chemistry WASN’T sexual. Nurturing and intimate, yes, but not romantic. I love their dynamic, as well as having Holmes in NYC, which adds another layer of things to explore. Taking Holmes out of his element and placing him elsewhere does some great things for the character. I look forward to seeing where this show goes.
No matter how much the fans of Miller and Liu welcome this show, there will still be some disgruntled fans of Cumberbatch and his little mini-series. Come on, people. grow up! Entertainment is business and Elementary with Miller and Liu will do very well for CBS.
CBS calls Steven Moffat, “Hey, can you adapt Sherlock for US audiences?” “Sorry, I’m quite busy Sherlock and Dr. Who”
So CBS goes off and develops a near carbon copy of Moffat’s Sherlock.
I hope Moffat sues.
They had to make it different in some dramatic way. Otherwise, everyone would just be saying it’s not as good as ‘Sherlock’. Which I don’t think it ever will be, but it will be different and might be good in it’s own right.
I liked Jonny Lee Miller on Eli Stone, but my first reaction to the casting of the two leads was that the roles should be reversed.
Boring idea, CBS. Might as well watch BONES. And I’m more bothered by an ASIAN Watson than anything else.
No female Watson has ever worked– and it never will.
A female colleague recently pointed out to me that if they really wanted to do something intriguing with this angle, they would have made HOLMES a woman, not Watson. However, I think Lucy is underrated and I really enjoyed the BBC series, so, I will be watching if at least, at first.
Naming the characters Holmes & Watson was unnecessary and totally irrelevant to the show–it will only irritate fans of the traditional stories.
I don’t particularly hate a woman as Watson. I do hate the utterly repulsive Lucy Liu as Watson.
It’s a bad casting decision for a show that is otherwise very similar to many more on the same network. I hope they move The Mentalist back to that time slot or substitute Unforgettable there once Elementary inevitably fails.
Don’t mind the gender change but Lucy Liu is an average actress at best. From what I saw in the promos, she’ll ruin the series with her weird delivery.
I love that the Brits have their collective panties in a wad over this. Might be wiser to wait and see….less chance of looking like sour grapes when Elementary succeeds.
