EXCLUSIVE: In a whopping summer auction that reached seven figures, 20th Century Fox acquired Gone Girl, the Gillian Flynn novel that was just published by Crown and is atop The New York Times Bestseller List for the second week in a row. The book will be produced by Pacific Standard’s Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea, along with Leslie Dixon. Flynn will write the screenplay. Other studios including Universal were in on the action and I think the Fifty Shades Of Grey action has elevated interest in bestsellers geared to female readers.
A woman disappears on the day of her fifth anniversary and all roads point to her husband as the killer. Flynn, who has three novels on the bestseller lists all at once, has two other movie projects in the works. Dark Places has Amy Adams attached to star, with Gilled Paquet-Brenner directing and her first novel, Sharp Objects, was optioned by Alliance with Blumhouse’s Jason Blum producing. Fox’s
New York office, headed by Drew Reed, was all over this book. Reed and Chris Goldberg teamed with Peter Kang to bring it in. It was sold by Smiley Group’s Shari Smiley, the former longtime CAA agent who teamed with Stephanie Rostan of Levine/Greenberg Literary Agency. Smiley also sold the screen rights to the Cheryl Strayed book Wild, which currently sits atop the Non Fiction bestseller list. Pacific Standard bought it, with The Kids Are All Right’s Lisa Cholodenko adapting to direct.

Reese is making smart decisions lately
Lets be real and give credit where credit is truly due and that is to Bruna Papandrea on these creative decisions!
gillian will become a force to be reckoned with — amazing writer
I’ve been a fan of Flynn since Sharp Objects. I live in SW Missouri and her characterization of these areas is deadly accurate.
That said, holy fuck I hope Witherspoon doesn’t plan to star in this. She’s completely wrong for Amy and she’ll probably try to do a bad Southern accent even though Amy’s a New Yorker.
Reese Witherspoon can’t “try to do a bad southern accent” because she actually is from the south. (Raised in Nashville)
I wouldn’t call WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS AND MEN ARE MARS are smart choice, but this one sounds interesting. More of this please.
I don’t get it. What’s all this commotion about? The plot sounds like an episode of “Snapped” on Oxygen Channel
Flynn is an interesting writer, because she writes what are essentially genre thriller books with the expected fast pace, plot twists and so forth, but she has the technique and writing ability of writers who write “serious books”. I guess an anology (not on content or even style, but on mixing high and low) would be the way someone like Tarantino makes “B-movies” with incredibly high production value and great writing.
Oh, come on. Read the damn novel before you respond!
That was a response to huh’s comment. Not your’s, Heff…..
I’m not so sure it’s a good idea to have the author pen the script. Script writing is a separate art form.
Agreed! I completely agree. Give this to a great screenwriter who will turn it into “Best Picture.”
Does anyone know about Sharp Objects? I had read awhile ago that a screenplay was being written.
YAY Shari Smiley! She is a fantastic agent and really nice too. I’m not at all surprised to see her succeeding on this scale. Go Shari!!!
really, another Reese W. development deal. 7 figures. No way. Can’t remember the last Reese W starring vehicle that did any business. No studio is making a movie the rests on her sole shoulders. these announcements are so ridic.
Gone Girl was the first book I read by Flynn, and I was completely blown away by her talent. I for one am glad she’s writing the script. Maybe it will stick more closely to the book with her writing it.
Witherspoon needs to stay away from the FRONT of the camera. IF not, this also will go to the wayside and it doesn’t matter WHO is writing what.
I was wondering who would be a good “Amy”, and though I haven’t read anywhere that Reese plans to star in the movie, I think she’d be great. Type-A, tightly wound, very pretty, she’s a little young, but close enough. I can’t see a total unknown taking it on, and can’t think of a current actress who would be more suitable. Who should play Nick? Food for thought.
I’m kinda hoping Reese doesn’t get this role. I like some of her stuff but I really feel like she doesn’t have it in her to depict an accurate Amy. Based on looks, I personally think Kristen Bell (even though she’s a bit young) would be better. And I always envisioned Nick having brown hair so the fact that he is supposed to have blonde hair slightly aggravates me. But whatever. Trevor Donovan is definitely attractive enough. Look him up! (Keep in mind many of the initial results are from when he was a bit younger) Overall, incredible book… let’s just hope it isn’t another great read butchered on screen.
I see gwenyth paltrow playing amy, shes real good at being disconnected yet loving yet completely not herself (or anyone in particulat for that matter) at the same time. The perfect sociopath.
I’m almost done with the book, and I keep picturing Charlize Theron in Young Adult whenever I try to picture Amy. Especially with the whole Amazing Amy thing and how Theron’s character was a ghost author for a series of once-successful children books.
I just heard on The View that Reese is going to play Amy. I hate that casting. This girl is supposed to be a hip NYC girl which, while I love Reese in some things, she is not
Totally agree about Gwenyth. And I never pictured Nick as a blond either…he is a Brooklyn hipster and they are not blond. I loved this book, I hope they don’t ruin the film
All of you saying Reese couldn’t play her, dis you see Freeway?? She played crazy INSANELY awesome. And Election too! I would love to see her play an adult crazy.
Jennifer Wells I totally agree. I think Reese Witherspoon is exactly America’s sweetheart. She is the Amy on the outside for real. But when you see Freeway and Election you know she really is an actress. That’s what actors do they act. Rick Witherspoon is an Oscar winning actress. She even played a circus performer. Or did ya’all just watch Legally Blonde.
Agree with Sloane…Reese should play Amy. As far as her ability, she’s an academy award winner (see Fire, Ring of) and the true nature of the charachter of Amy may let her cut loose and show a dark, manipulative side the public might eat up. Just please, much as I admire her, no Jessica Chastain. I’m sure she could do a great job…she does in everything….but she is way overexposed.
I’m finishing GONE GIRL and it’s so good I dread it ending.
How about Jake and Maggie Gyllenhaal for Nick and his sister Go? They could certainly pass for fraternal twins. I like Gwenyth or Charlize for Amy – sorry Reese!
Oh no!! NOT Resse Witherspoone as Amy Dunne!! That just simply “does not connect!” You need to find a different actress for Amy. Resse is much too loveable. Consider Aaron Eckhart as Nick. But, PLEASE find another actress to portray Amy. I don’t think the audience would grow to “hate” Reese Witherspoon” as Amy’s character enough to make it through. Please, give this a “re-think.’ and please choose another female actor.
I kept Julia Louis Dreyfus in mind while I was reading the novel. J.L.D. has yet to prove herself on the big screen and this could be a wonderful opportunity for her to expose herself as a serious dramatic actor. Pair her up with Aaron Eckhart, as Nick, and see what happens……
Julia Louis Dreyfus is to old to play Amy
I see Scarlett Johansson as Amy and much as I’d like to see Ryan Reynolds as Nick I’m not sure those two would act on the same set together. Imagine the chemistry! That truly would be acting!
