EXCLUSIVE:While 20th Century Fox isn’t banging the gong at Comic-Con this year, the studio has big developments on several geek-worthy projects.
* Fox has officially set Chronicle helmer Josh Trank to direct the reboot of Fantastic Four, and the film will be the next Marvel property to be slated for production and dated for release by the studio. Fantastic Four, which will include a new cast, falls into line after The Wolverine sequel
that starts production shortly, and the Matthew Vaughn-directed X-Men: First Class, which is also on a fast track. After Trank’s breakthrough with the Fox sleeper hit Chronicle he has been offered everything and attached himself to several projects. But I’m told that Fox expects Fantastic Four to be the next film he directs. It’s scripted by Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz, who also wrote X-Men: First Class and Thor.

* Fox has set Attack The Block helmer Joe Cornish to direct Rust, an E.T.-style story scripted by Aline Brosh McKenna based on the Royden Lepp novel about a struggling farm family and the mysterious robot that shows up and changes their lives. The film is a sci-fi adventure aimed at a family audience, and it is now a priority with Cornish aboard. Simon Kinberg’s Genre Films is producing, with Stephen Christy and P.J. Bickett of Archaia Entertainment exec producing.

* Fox is looking for a director on its other major Marvel reboot, after David Slade just dropped out of Daredevil. The studio has a script it likes, but has to get the film into production by fall or contractually risk having the the property revert to Marvel Studios and Disney. Slade could not make the timing work as he is directing the pilot of the series Hannibal.

I hope they don’t find a director to replace Slade on Daredevil so it will revert back to Marvel.
My thoughts EXACTLY! Please, oh PLEASE let Daredevil – and ALL Marvel properties, in fact – revert back to Marvel!
My God… The nerds have officially taken over Hollywood.
Dude, nerds have control of most things related to entertainment.
It would be great to let Marvel have control of (gasp!) Marvel-based movies.
And it makes sense for Fox to have a new take on Fantastic Four, since Chris Evans is currently Captain America, for the (somewhat) foreseeable future.
Can I be the only one who hopes that Fox is just a bit late on that ‘Daredevil’ option? I would love to see–since Marvel can’t have Spidey, yet–Daredevil make an appearance in a Marvel film.
See, I doubt he would even if the rights did revert.
People act as if Marvel regaining the rights (to any of these properties) would mean an instantly-greenlit “good” reboot by the studio, while completely ignoring the fact that Blade and Punisher have been back for several years yet have been entirely unused.
Well, Punisher: War Zone didn’t do as well as expected, so that may explain seeming indifference toward that property. And the Blade TV series just soured my view of a not-Wesley Snipes Blade. And I doubt they’ll be able to get him on track again for a 4TH Blade movie.
That’s where those properties went wrong.
And also probably why they aren’t being used again just yet.
Punisher TV show is in development by Marvel TV for Fox. Blade as it stands wont fit into the current PG13 Avengers Marvel Universe.
They also have so many new characters they haven’t used yet so there’s no reason to rush brining Blade back. Might be more likely to be made once Dr Strange and the more fantasy / horror stuff comes to the screen.
Because typically whenever Marvel does get the rights back they usually fast track them with some sort of project. Iron Man and the Hulk weren’t even a part of the Avengers film slate when it was first announced but once New Line and Universal gave up the rights, Iron Man and the Incredible Hulk became the first two films Marvel produced. When Lionsgate gave up the Punisher, ABC Studios jumped onto a Punisher TV show. And when Sony gave up the television rights to Spider-Man, they immediately jumped onto a new Spider-Man cartoon.
The only character that has not been fast tracked is Blade, and that’s because no one gives a shit about Blade, and most don’t associate him with the Marvel brand. Hell, Marvel barely promotes the character at all with the Marvel Universe asides from incredibly obscure projects.
Slade dropped out to stick with a tv pilot?
He’ll make way more money in the long run off of residuals of every episode. If it goes a few seasons, he’s set.
Of course they will make a bad Daredevil movie very fast just to keep the rights. That is what’s wrong with today’s studio mentality. They are so afraid of losing something to another studio but in this case Daredevil is worth losing. They tried it with Affleck and it won’t be any better with another actor. Tom Rothman should step up and direct it himself he thinks he’s a director here’s his chance to really be one.
So if Daredevil isn’t made now then Disney can add Daredevil to it’s lineup. Maybe intro Avengers 2?
More origin stories I suppose? Thousands of issues and we keep getting the first one over and over. Getting kind of ridiculous.
At last word, the new Daredevil was going to skip the origin and go straight into a story about a revenge-bent villain.
let it revert back to Marvel than they can actually use Kingpin in the Amazing Spiderman 2 as he was a spiderman villian first
Wouldn’t matter…Spiderman is at Sony.
Even if Daredevil went back to Marvel/Disney, Sony has rights to Spiderman so Kingpin wouldn’t be in a Spiderman movie unless Marvel/Disney allowed Sony to use him.
David Slade. Please stay in television.
Look on the bright side: Joe Cornish is directing a new movie. Attack the Block is one of the finest genre films we’ve ever had.
They have their place but I prefer the darker approach to certain characters in the Marvel Universe and don’t need them all homogenized under the Avengers, so I hope Daredevil gets a great director like Nic Refn.
As if I need 2 more seasons to boycott the box office. The people running these studios are dumber than the people mopping the floors of them.
You are right they have not been used but if daredevil revert back marvel might reconsider this properties because now they can expand and create a new street level universe with these characters and it won’t cost them as much to make these kinds of movies because your not using as much SFX and CGI like with the big budget films. I don’t think marvel will sit to long if they get daredevil back. We just need a little patients.
It’s not that I want to see cameos and crossovers galore in Marvelverse — cameos are nice, but don’t over do it — but I want events to be in one continuity and know that every Marvel superhero has the chance to meet another just like the comics. And know that with each event, the heroes are accounted for somewhere.
Really? Reboot FF? How freakin unoriginal have people become? Hey why doesn’t Fox reboot STAR WARS? A whole generation hasn’t seen it. Go for it Fox.
I like how everyone has completely ignored fantastic four Josh Trank can finally make a solid Fantastic 4 movie with an obvious dark approach and the coolest villain of all time Dr. Doom will return to the bigscreen
I know I’m psyched about the FF movie reboot, No. 2 was good but felt they could have improved some. But what I’d love to see would be a Green Hornet movie reboot (where it took place back in the 40′s); Doc Savage and even a redux of the Peter Cushing Dr. Who 1965/66 movies
