BREAKING: Walter Hill, who most recently wrapped the Sylvester Stallone-starrer Bullet To The Head, has partnered with The Aldrich Company to develop a remake of the 1962 Bette Davis-Joan Crawford classic What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? Hill will write the script and direct the film. The original was directed and produced by Robert Aldrich, with Lukas Heller adapting the Henry Farrell novel.
Warner Bros will release Bullet To The Head in February and Hill sparked to the idea of re-creating the nightmarish relationship between two sisters in a crumbling Hollywood mansion, where former child star Jane Hudson (Davis) holds captive her crippled former movie-queen sister (Crawford).
“The two equal leads demand great performers — that is a given,” Hill said. “The intensity of the Gothic storyline makes a reconfiguration of the drama still a potentially searing experience. The idea is to make a modern film without modernizing the period. It needs to resonate the golden age of Hollywood.”
The Aldrich Company controlled the rights on behalf of the original director and entrusted them to Hill. “I am greatly honored that Walter Hill will be joining us in the collaboration of this film,” said the late director’s daughter Adell Aldrich. “I know that he will respect the material and the legacy of this terrific project.” Hill and Aldrich will produce. ICM Partners reps Hill with attorney Eric Brooks while Aldrich is repped by attorney by Eric Weissmann.

DO NO REMAKE THIS FILM!!!!
Some things should never be remade…
PLEASE SAY THAT IT WILL START MERYL STREEP AND ANGELICA HOUSTON…
Already remade once for television starring Vanessa and Lynn Redgrave. Tough to improve on the original. It will be interesting to see if/how they manage it.
Great. I can just smell the casting now: Anne Hathaway and Natalie Portman!
Or, how about “Baby Jane: The Teen Years” with Kristin Stewart and Dakota Fanning?
And, of all writer-director hyphenates in all the world, Walter Hill is attached to this?
P.S. “I know that he will respect the material and the legacy of this terrific project.”
Really? Can someone please tell me when, ever, did a writer or director respect previously filmed material?
Courtney Love as Baby Jane Hudson!!!
And Courtney Stodden as a young Baby Jane!
Courtney Love is TOO nuts to play Baby Jane.
Trannies the world over are scratching their heads, and not from itchy wigs. What an odd choice to remake a camp gay classic. Definitely posting about this…
Just don’t cast Kyra Sedgwick for either part. Hated the one where she was the psychiatrist. It was painful. Glad to see Walter back at work, A wonderful guy to work with.
Believe me,,the film is in the very best of hands with Walter Hill,,He’s one of the all time greats and the Best to work with..
Whatever Happened to Bullet in the Head? This was shot a year ago! First John Bonito then Wayne Kramer. Way to go, Sly! Either of those would have been a better choice to direct Bullet in the Head.
I’d take a seasoned helmer like Walter Hill any day over those two. Wayne Kramer is inconsistent at best, and John Bonito… the guy who directed THE MARINE? No, thanks.
How is this related to Comic-Con? That’s the problem with SDCC. It’s not even about comics anymore, really. Which is sad. NYCC is the new comic convention for true comic book lovers.
They’ll tart it up and do it all wrong. Besides, an aging actress now would have been big in the 80s. The melancholy nostalgia won’t be there!
Jack is absolutely right. The nostalgia factor had to do with one sister being a Shirly Temple like star – what about the 70s or 80s calls up that same film sense or could convince us that Baby Jane had once been a sort of America Sweetheart? Love Walter Hill and never thought he got his due but this is all so wrong.
What the what? No, no, no. All this time I’ve been hoping against that proposed remake of his THE WARRIORS, and now HE’S going to do THIS? Please, no, Walter!
Glenn Close & Meryl Streep? Y/Y?
Brad Pitt and Russell Crowe?
” But ya are Blanche “- this is another Hollywood mistake. And who are they going to cast? Two twenty year olds ? A really bad idea- how about Lohan & Holmes-LOL
It could be brilliant as a stage play for two extraordinary actresses. But as a film, it’s just too iconic. You might as well re-make Casablanca. (Damn, that’s probably already on somebody’s development slate.)
WTF?! Let’s just go for Sunset Boulevard while we’re at it! BAD idea!
I love Aldrich’s films. Many people think of him as an action director (“The Dirty Dozen,” “Emperor of the North,” “Ulzana’s Raid,” “The Longest Yard,” etc.) but when you see the female performances he encouraged in “The Killing of Sister George,” “The Legend of Lilah Clare” and “Hush…Hugh Sweet Charlotte,” the versatility and thoughtfulness of this underrated filmmaker cannot be denied. Hill has a huge benchmark to reach.
If they’re going to remake it, Bruno Heller, Lukas Heller’s son should write it. Or, Zoe Heller, his daughter. Also a brilliant writer.
Remade Once already. A TV-Movie with the Redgrave Sisters
And, as wonderful as those actresses are/were, that version still pales in comparison to the Davis/Crawford original. After all, the well-known accounts of their backstage feud during filming provides the original film with more bite than any contemporary version could.
Stop this Meryl Streep nonsense. You know there are other equally great actresses out there? Give them a chance. I’d love to see maybe Sigourney Weaver and Jessica Lange tackle these roles. Jessica in Joan’s role and Sigourney in Bette’s.
Perhaps you should let AMPAS know that. They are still under the impression that she is the ONLY actress in Hollywood.
Don’t get me even started on AMPAS and Meryl… It’s absolutely ridiculous.
Jessica Lange must play Bette’s role.
Hey WB,
Let’s do this remake properly.
First, change the title to “Whatever Happened to Baby Jack”.
Second, cast it with men specifically Johnny Depp and Russell Crowe.
Third, make it about aging vampires. (of course, vampires are not really supposed to age…but, that is not important either).
Fourth, make it in at least 3D unless 4D or 5D has been developed. You know, the more D’s the
better.
Can’t wait.
For the record, I did see that Walter Hill is developing this concept with the Aldrich Company. The comment is addressed to WB on purpose as this concept is a match made in heaven for the current WB team.
And thats the problem with the SDCC too many non comic properties taking up already limited space
“Whatever Happened to Baby Jane” has already been remade!!! But even with the brilliant Redgrave sisters (Vanessa and Lynn) in the leads, the 1991 made-for-TV update tanked. No additional versions are necessary!
MAKE IT STOP FOR ALL OUR SAKES
The problem with casting is finding an actress that was big and no longer big today. She needs to seem like a “has been” and who wants to admit to that?
If Elizabeth Taylor was still alive, she would be perfect for the role of one sister.
In the past, 40 to 50 year old actresses were “has beens”. Today, 50 to 60 year olds are “has beens” and they may have to aim higher.
Glenn Close and Sharon Stone with Michael Douglas as Edwin Flagg.
Actually, Gimbo, Glenn Close is an excellent casting idea. But I’d pair her with Courtney Love, who wouldn’t even need to be told it was a movie.
Naill: Only one can play the outright wacko. It seems like Glenn Close, the bunny boiler, can now be the rat server.
Sharon Stone can play the straight sister unless they want to make it slightly kinky.
Glenn Close or Jessica Lange as Baby Jane and the great Barbara Hershey as Blanche.
