The CW isn’t the kind of network that might have a propensity to assault its audience with ugly characters, which is why some were puzzled when it picked up a reboot of the 1980s CBS drama Beauty And The Beast for fall. But those attending TCA and have watched the pilot quickly learned that the home of Gossip Girl and young adults with flawless skin hasn’t deviated much
from its focus on the physical. In fact, with stars Kristin Kreuk and hunky New Zealand native Jay Ryan, it was difficult to tell during a morning panel which of the two was supposed to be the beast. It more closely resembled Beauty and the Beef. The only real physical tipoff that something might be amiss with Ryan’s character Vincent is a small scar on his cheek. When this was pointed out to the show’s producers, they stressed that, well, the guy’s beastliness is
supposed to be more…internal. “When we were first thinking about this, it was about the beast in our lives”, said exec producer Jennifer Levin, “and most of the beasts in our lives don’t look like an actual beast. They might be charming. There’s something that might draw us to them. So there is that thing of what happens when you do fall in love with a beast, which is what we related to much more than somebody who obviously was beastly from the outside. It was more beastliness that was on the inside. That was more interesting to us”.
There was only one problem with this explanation as far as the critics and reporters on hand were concerned: in the pilot, the beast is pretty un-beastly on the inside as well. That prompted star Ryan to jump in and stress that his character is really more of a Jekyll and Hyde. “It’s almost like two people in this one character”, he explained. “The beast is more of a serial killer, and Vincent is trying to suppress him throughout. That will become more apparent and the beast will become much more dangerous”. Of course, the other explanation is that The CW couldn’t risk alienating its core audience with a guy who resembled Freddy Krueger. Even vampires on this network look like they stepped off the pages of GQ. This sentiment was expressed to the producers, prompting exec producer Sherri Cooper to respond, “The beasts who are going to hurt us don’t come across as beastly. They don’t look exactly like Jay.” Added Levin: “And the idea that no one’s all beast and no one’s all beauty.” Assured Cooper: “He’s going to become beastlier. Much beastlier.” Levin then began to substitute the word “beast” for “jerk”, making the point that few women don’t fall for guys with plenty of baggage. “We really wanted to feel like this was relevant to us and our lives and have it be more grounded and compelling in that way. To us, that was more realistic than just having as guy who looks like a lion.”

If they don’t have the guts to show the Beast, then there is no show. This will die by mid-season.
That last quote just HAD to be a jab at the talented Ron Perlman, who played the Beast in the original version.
Or they could try to expand their core audience of, what, a million viewers? Lame.
I watched the pilot at Comic Con (because I was waiting for something else) and it was so ridiculous and stupid.
SPOILERS BELOW
1. Both detectives looked mid 20s and we know how realistic that would be in the NYPD
2. The beast wasn’t just a beast. He was a doctor BACK in 2001, joined the army, not as a medic but as part of a special op team picked for experimental drugs and in 2012, he looks still 20. He must have gotten his medical degree back in kindergarten.
3. The Beast turns into the Hulk when angry
4. In the pilot, she finds out about his existence, meets him, help each other and are possibly in love and now that they have gotten that out of the way, they can start with the ‘will they/won’t they’ stuff.
Wow. Just, wow. The only words that I can come up with at this point are this: “Epic Fail.” The mind boggles at the utter hubris of taking a successful classic franchise, then thinking it’s a good idea to throw out the key core element that made that franchise what it was. (See also: “Let’s remake Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. But wait! This time, they’re not turtles or mutants, they’re aliens!”)
Frankly, the quotes from the execs sound like this is just one giant excuse to exorcise issues from bad relationships they’ve had.
Have you even seen it?
I agree. We should never try new things. Unless I can watch the exact same show I’ve already seen, I ain’t watching!
The whole point of the classic tale, beyond the 80′s show, is that they can’t be together, no matter how much they want it, they can’t do what normal couples do, they can’t be seen together. So, if the beast is not really a beast and just has the “inner” beast to deal with, there is no real longing for what can’t happen, no turmoil, which the essence of the whole story. If he’s too normal and can bust into McDonalds for a Big Mac, you don’t have b&b, you’ve got an average sounding police drama. Snore!
@CMG: Right on.
It appears that in order to have a’pre-sold’ title, they’ve forgotten what this lovely morality tale is about–not judging a book by it’s cover, in fact, the polar opposite of what they’re describing. In the traditional story,The Beast has had a spell put on him, but he is a good hearted person–he acts all mean and nasty because he’s been rejected (due to his scary looks)–and it’s the beauty who sees through that armor that breaks the spell. So, having the Beast be someone who looks good on the outside but is secretly an asshole–why do they need to use this title? it’s ridiculous.
Seriously ppl shut up! This is the CW. Where hot guys and shirtless guys are what’s pimped. Having your main guy covered in hair 24/7 was not going to happen.
I saw the pilot at comic con and liked it. Its called beauty and the BEAST cause he TURNS into the beast when angry. He looks like a beast. Just cause he’s not beastly all the time doesn’t take away from the fact he is still a beast
Because it’s Kristin….I am withholding my opinion. Sometimes it takes awhile for a show to get it’s legs. We’ll see..
seems like a weak attempt at a tired concept, but.. who knows? could turn out to be pretty good. Kreuk is a beautiful actress who has leagues of experience selling that trademark CW tone we have all come to know and love
pretty sure I’d watch it just to see her close ups… and to hear the kiwi guy’s best attempt at an American accent.
Their only real mistake here was calling this show “Beauty and the Beast” to attempt to capitalize on a connection that doesn’t exist. The show could be fine, but it quite specifically lacks every narrative feature of the supposed source material.
As mentioned, the key to the original was the fact that the Beast could not be loved by an ordinary girl, because of his repulsive appearance. It took someone capable of seeing past his disgusting exterior to the person inside for him to find someone that could love him.
By making him a “jerk on the inside” they’ve pretty much made the beast into…well, a decent portion of your standard male population. Someone plenty of women (unfortunately) would be happy to form a relationship with.
It also takes away from beauty’s specialness, transforming her from someone able to see past physical imperfection into someone who apparently pines after a jerkwad who looks like an underwear model.
Meh. Like I said, it could still be a successful CW drama, but it’s hardly “Beauty and the Beast.”
I saw the pilot and I actually enjoyed it! Obviously, the viewer has to suspend disbelief to accept what is happening on the show but overall I enjoyed it and excited to see Kristin return to the silver screen!
Wait…so Kreuk is playing the beauty!??!
If there is no beast then it is not Beauty and the Beast, period!! You must have a Beast and not just some cute guy with a small scar on his clearly handsome cheek!!!!! How dare you take the Beast out of it!!!! He will NEVER be Vincent to me, NO ONE can replace my Vincent!!! And I never thought he was a beast anyway, I thought he was gorgeous!! To be a beast he is supposed to be physically hideous when compared to the modern concept of human attractivness, NOT already attractive with a mild flaw!!!
Kristin kreuk is a talented actress,i will watch this for sure!
The last line said something about this Beast being more realistic. The most beautiful part of the Ron Perelman/Linda Hamilton Beauty and the Beast was the fantasy of this terrifying, uber-strong “mutant” who could think, reason, control and love deeply despite the hardships he has endured because of his deformity, making him all the more handsome! I fell in love with Vincent when I was seventeen, thanks to Ron Perelman and his portrayal of one of the best characters on TV.
The new “version” sounds perfectly CW; I just wish they call it anything else.
