The CW remains high on the concept of young people battling each other. The network last season developed the Hunger Games-esque The Selection, an adaptation of Kiera Cass’ book. The project went to pilot but didn’t make the cut to series. “I’m a big believer (in the concept)”, the CW’s president Mark Pedowitz said during the CW’s TCA executive session. “The producers did a very good job, but it wasn’t where we wanted to be tone-wise, we wanted it to have a Hunger Games/Game Of Thrones-type tone.” Elizabeth Craft and Sarah Fain, who wrote the original pilot, are back rewriting it.
While Selection is still in the works, the CW also is looking to put a development a series version of the 2000 cult Japanese movie Battle Royale, Pedowitz confirmed, stressing that talks are very preliminary. The film is about a group of school children sent to an island where, on the government’s orders, they must kill each other until one remains. Asked about the rationale behind going after such a violent premise involving school-age kids shooting and killing other kids, especially in the current environment, Pedowitz said that “we’re not planning anything that we cannot get on the air; we won’t go in that direction.”
After the session, Pedowitz noted that his team is in conversation with Warner Bros TV about more projects based on DC properties to join new drama Arrow. “Even if Arrow does not work — and I hope it does work for a lot of reasons — we plan to continue developing comic characters,” he said.

The CW continues to be interested in bringing back comedy series to the network, but the plan is being put on the back burner until “we stabilize the schedule,” Pedowitz said. Last season, the network developed eight half-hour scripts. It held onto two of them — an adaptation of the 2009 British comedy FM and the Craig Zadan- and Neil Meron-produced Swordfighting – for midseason consideration. Now Pedowitz said there will be no movement on the comedy front until after the CW fall lineup premieres but the network will continue to selectively buy comedy pitches. He also said that, instead of going down the traditional pilot route, “we may do it through digital,” testing comedies online before making a decision whether to migrate them to TV.
Doing yet another postmortem on cancelled Sarah Michelle Gellar drama Ringer, Pedowitz noted that “22 episodes a season may be too many” for a heavily serialized drama, with six or 13 probably more manageable. (New CW serialized drama Cult will run a 13-episode first season.) Pedowitz also repeated his statement from the upfront that the CW has invited Gellar to come back to the network as an actress or producer.
Pedowitz was asked about the CW’s ratings woes (the network recently earned a 0.0 overnight rating for a repeat of 90210). He reiterated that overnight ratings have little meaning for the network. “We look at it through an aggregation, (including digital platforms)”, he said. “We can measure who’s watching us on digital, but it does not count with the Nielsen ratings.”
Of the CW summer series, Pedowitz noted that he wished they’ve performed better. Both reality series Breaking Point and Canadian drama The LA Complex, which Pedowitz said has performed well digitally, are “under consideration for continuing.”
The CW is airing Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog in October. Pedowitz admitted he was proactive and reached out to Whedon after first trying to acquire the rights to the online musical when he ran ABC Studios.
After the session, Pedowitz said that discussions are under way for a Gossip Girl retrospective special and that Misha Collins is signed for a minimum of eight episodes of Supernatural.
Pedowitz kept the proceedings going at a brisk pace with quick answers and occasional quips. Here are two of his answers:
“Why didn’t Secret Circle connect like The Vampire Diaries did?”
“Not enough good-looking men, not enough sense of humor. Women do love men.”
“Did the CW pass on its zombie project because zombies are too gross for broadcast TV?”
“The CW dead look a lot better than those on The Walking Dead. You can’t believe how good they look.”

“Battle Royale” as a TV series? After the Movie Premiere Massacre? What on earth are they thinking?
Thinking “money.” And thinking who cares who gets shot. Gross.
There’s no evidence that violent television had anything to do with that, there’s only one person to blame for that tragedy and that’s the gunman. This adaptation would obviously be toned down for network television for teenagers and I doubt there would be any glorification of the violence. Society can’t take on responsibility for the actions of despicable individuals.
So anotherwgamember, are you saying you won’t watch any more violent TV series and movies with guns? Total Recall, Bourne Identity, James Bond and Hunger Games?
Hello!!!!!! please go through your thoughts before airing them online.
I think the CW is being pretty transparent that they want their own version of a HUNGER GAMES series. This is the wrong way for them to bring ratings for their network. If they keep doing this, they’ll end up the broadcast equivalent of the guys selling knock-off purses on the sidewalk in NYC. At best, they would get some of the Hunger Games fans watching their show for a couple episodes, then saying, “Hunger Games was better.”
I’m shocked with it’s ratings that it’s still functioning as a network. It never should have merged — WB was doing well.
I do think that this is their best lineup in years with very smart moves.
Would love 2 see Ringer & The Secret Cirlce back! I think they would do great, already missing them!
So you’re the one.
“Asked about the rationale behind going after such a violent premise involving school-age kids shooting and killing other kids, especially in the current environment, Pedowitz said that “we’re not planning anything that we cannot get on the air; we won’t go in that direction.”
Then which direction can you possibly go?!
Yeah. Unless it’s on FX or HBO, Battle Royale is WAY too dark for almost any network. Kids killing kids? You’re waiting around for your favorite characters to get killed or kill someone?
Good book. Enjoyable movie. Won’t work on network TV. It’s just REALLY dark. And if you tweak it too much, it won’t be Battle Royale. Don’t think Royale fans are fans anyone would want to piss off.
There are other pilots bouncing around town that take the concept and play with it just enough to make it more palatable. CW needs to do their research. The scripts are out there – lighter than BR but not as dopey as (yawn) The Selection.
I hope the CW gets their heads together, cause i’ll be darned if my show Supernatural has to find a new home or worse, get canceled because the network cant produce that many watchable shows. I mean, its all about ripping off other ideas…The VAmpire Diaries, obvious(Twilight), and no one wants to watch a bunch of snobby rich kids(90210). at least Supernatural was an original idea, not ripped off from anywhere. It has its own pure storyline and the characters are believable. It’s one of the greatest shows ever made! That’s just my opinion!
The Vampire Diaries has nothing to do with Twilight!Trust me.I thought so too but BOY did this tv show suprised me!Is this show awards-worthy?NO.But it certainly better than most of the shows that the top 6 networks airing!I mean this show cliffhangers and jaw-dropping moments like nobody;s buissness. It’s fast-paced and you know that you are in for one hell of a ride!Yes it strats kinda slowly (witht the forst 5 eps)but then it starts kicking some serious butt!
From episode 6 it’s so obvious that this show is not afraid to take risk. And the best? Most of its episodes are episodes so significant that other shows (calles award worth) would keep for a season finale or something like that!
Trust me..it is no twilight!Actually TVD was writen in 1991 while Twilight got published in 2005!So no rip-off here!
“Not enough good-looking men, not enough sense of humor. Women do love men.”
That’s insulting. There are too many misogynistic pricks in Hollywood. Maybe the Secret Circle failed because the writing was terrible and they took forever to get to the point and they would bring up an interesting plot and then abandon it. There were plenty of good-looking men in cast, however, women do not simply watch television to get their rocks off.
The Secret Circle did have terrible writing, but I think Mark has a point, too. Killing Nick (one of the best-looking guys — not to mention the most interesting character) off after three episodes to introduce his brother Jake (read: character who was boring as hell) was a stupid decision. They should’ve killed off Nick’s girlfriend instead (I forget her name, but geez, she just sucked the fun out of any scene she was in).
I don’t watch Secret Circle (or Vampire Diaries, for that matter) to get my rocks off, but the hot guys and darkly sarcastic, witty writing (both of which TSC overall lacked, outside of Terminator Boy) of Vampire Diaries certainly doesn’t hurt. Not to mention the acting is loads better on TVD.
The Secret Circle improved dramatically, in every way possible, by the time it ended, but that wasn’t enough to save it. I went from openly mocking it and groaning every time I sat through an episode to actually wanting it to come back so I could see what happened next and missing it now that it’s gone. I think it was actually something like the #2 scripted show on the network in the demo, but I guess when you can’t live up to The Vampire Diaries numbers, you get axed.
I liked Ringer, too, even if it wasn’t the best show in the world. I hope SMG comes back to network television again.
I doubt SPN will be cancelled Pedowitz is a HUGE fan of the show to start with. Secondly it’s their biggest hit at tthe moment besides TVD. Speaking of Twilight ripped off TVD tho I don’t care for either but TVD was around YEARS before twilight. I do agree about the snobby rich kids. As for SPN not being ripped from anything that’s laughable since Kripke himself said he ripped the idea from a cross between X-files and Star Wars. Dean is based on Hans Solo. Not trying to cause an argument just setting facts straight. I have been a fan of SPN since Pilot so I’m not bashing the show or the boys.
FINALLY!!! A network executive who is actively and open to looking at “Digital Ratings” when it comes to the success of it’s shows!
What is the point of having all these “third party” TV companies (Hulu, Netflix, etc) if the network doesn’t care and/or track how many people are watching/using them!
Not to mention that almost every TV network has a Mobile App that they want you to “download to watch your favorite shows!”
If the networks only care about “live” viewers than they shouldn’t allow the shows to be on the “third party” sites!
“Battle Royal” was ripped off by “Hunger Games” with three books to explain in detail why it’s okay to murder children. The violence in film, video games and TV is anestsizing our culture. The puritanical repression of sexuality has to come out and violence in the US is the acceptable release. I think we are being programmed to just not care if some one is eviscerated on screen or off. Once you’ve seen it it’s there forever. You can say what you want but the reason they don’t let pilots fly for 48 hours after a simulator is because the human mind can’t differentiate between really and image. Now try that at 8 yrs old or 10 or 15 or…
I think “Bad Kids Go to Hell” should be a TV series!!<3
Pedowitz shouldn’t be making jokes in the state that his network is in right now. I can understand giving him a pass last year because most of the programming was under the origins of Ostroff, who ruined that network with her crazy ideas and leadership. Now, Pedowitz has his first year of full development of programming at the CW and he cannot totally rely on digital being the factor here or why even have a broadcast network if that’s where you’re going to put all your hopes on? He needs to establish a proper foundation for this network and that begins with good solid programming choices that will resonate with a variety of audiences and not just the tweens, as Ostroff relied on. Give shows the time to grow and kill of these stupid reality shows once and for all and focus on the tasks at hand for now.
BAD KIDS GO TO HELL would be a great TV series! It has the comic book character angle the CW says they are looking to develop. It is a great film.
Thank you, Mark! For giving The LA Complex a chance. I absolutely love that show. It’s so well written and I just love all the characters, their struggles and realistic portrayal of real people in the entertainment industry.
Hoping the ratings will pick up going forward to score a season 3 renewal.
Please watch this show, people!
First of all WHAT the HELL are they thinking Battle Royal is totally undo able for tv. Saw the movie and I’ve read the book and they were great but what if you do it for tv you cannot just kill off the whole cast in one season or keep the battle going on for how whever many seasons. But I have also read The Selection and I think It be great for tv soloy because they can darken this story up and like the TVD can make it juicer and mush more interesting than the book also they can use the idea of the book and make it better. More hunger games with a touch of romance.
I really hope he renews The L.A. Complex because it deserves to be seen in America. It improved sooooooooo much on Monday nights and I hope he sees that.
I believe continueing the Secrete cirle for a season two will be benificial for everyone. Im not saying this a fan of the show, but to say that i think the Secret Circle could be just as popular as the old television show Charmed. There is a huge part of the population that go crazy for this genre of television shows and movies. If casted right and written to please the viewers, this could possibly atrracked large amounts of profits and being able to continueing the show for more than just two seasons if chosen to be taken a chance on. Before another network jumps of the oppertunity of continueing the show i belive you should reconsider the cancellation of the Secret Circle.
