The pulling of The Dark Knight Rises TV spots after the shooting in Aurora, Colo, came from the networks first — not Warner Bros. “The networks decided the ads should be pulled this morning due to sensitivity concerns during their news coverage and WB agreed after the fact,” a studio insider says. All the networks turned over their Friday morning shows to reports of the shooting at the midnight screening of the third installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman saga. “NBC pulled the ads this morning and then later heard from Warners’ agency not to run them,” a source close to the network told Deadline. It was deemed inappropriate, the source added, to be covering the tragedy and showing ads and scenes from the Batman film in the same broadcast.
ABC, NBC and CBS plan to have their newsmagazine shows broadcasting from Aurora on Friday evening. CBS declined comment on the pulling of Dark Knight Rises ads on its network, but no TV spots will be running there this weekend. ABC had no information about the ads being pulled or not. In at least one instance, a network was contacted by Warner Bros: A Fox executive said the Dark Knight Rises ads were pulled in conjunction with a request from the studio.
The ads, which were to run during the film’s opening weekend, will now run at a later date on the networks. No details were available as to when that will be.

What exactly is the point of a piece like this? Who decided first? Does it matter?
Agree. This is a story looking for an angle that has none.
If they’re pulling all The Dark Knight rises adds , shouldn’t they pull ALL the movie spots in general from the other releases ?
That makes no sense at all to pull a Brave ad, or Ice Age ad. The whole shooting concerned The Dark Knight Rises movie? Use a little common sense. For once the media companies, networks and studio did the right thing. This has shaken up some people; I doubt they won’t go into a theater in a long time. Some people don’t really care and some it shakes them up.
People react to things differently.
Why?
They don’t need the ads. All CNN can talk about is this movie. There is no such thing as bad press. I went to see the movie today and the theater was full. I don’t think any of this will affect ticket sales at all.
Call me a cynic but I imagine a bevy of honchos from all the networks on a conference call agreeing to pull the ads because they know they’ll get eyeballs (and money back) by dedicating all of their news programming tonight — and over the next few days — to this tragedy. As for Warner Bros., they too probably figure those very same news programs will mention ‘Dark Knight’ so frequently, driving the movie into our collective consciousness more than any run-of-the-mill ad could EVER do. In a twisted sense, everyone wins (even the sicko/opportunistic politicians who will run to make this shooting and gun control the latest political football) Condolences to all who’ve suffered mightily from this madman gunman in Aurora
I don’t understand what pulling the ads do. Do the ads say ” Come see the movie linked to a mass shooting”? It’s nonsensical to me. The studio, the movie or its ads is not at fault for the tragedy in Aurora, its the fault of the stupid coward who perpetrated the crime and no one else’s.
I agree J.A. I wouldn’t be offended by seeing an ad for TDKR this weekend or at any other time. It’s not the filmmakers’ fault it’s the nutcase with a gun’s fault that those people died.
Some bean counter is thinking, “we don’t need to spend that movie now with all of the free pub we are getting.” In Hollywood, they live by the mantra that “there is no such thing as bad publicity.”
That does make complete sense.
A story like this is exactly why I enjoy this site. Here is a tragedy that should be evenly documented. It’s a perfect example of modern art that fuels the entertainment industry. The steps that the industry takes to address what happened is also an indication of how it responds to the viewing public in general. After all we all should react to whatever is happening to us; world events, trite, entertainment or otherwise.
To blame one movie or the content of one movie for an act of violence by a nut job wacko is ridiculous because then you would have to blame on movies even the kiddie cartoons. If this film violence was the case then there would have being a lot more incidents like this believe me because there are a lot of nut job walking about. It like blaming guns for some wacko using a gun to kill someone. Why not ban cars, or knives, or baseball bats. etc. I suppose if someone did this act at a football stadium they would be blaming football and its violence and demand no more football take place. Etc. etc. Paranoid hysteria is what this is all about and the media uses this kind of incidents to boost their ratings not because they are concerned for the welfare of anyone or are trying to show sympathy. The blatant truth of the matter was on display the last two days.
