UPDATE, 12:35 PM: Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures’ The Dark Knight Rises earned another $18.5M from 44 international markets on Thursday, giving it a new foreign cume of $149.2M. That means its worldwide total going into this weekend is $374M. In North America, The Dark Knight Rises took in another $13M for a fresh domestic tally of $224.8M.
PREVIOUS, 12 PM THURSDAY: The North American cume is now $211.8M from 4,404 theaters for a worldwide cume of $337.1M for its six days in release — which is less than its predecessor The Dark Knight earned in the same time period. But NRG research is currently showing that 20%-25% of the domestic moviegoing audience is still very hesitant to go this weekend because of the Colorado theater shooting. Overseas, Warner Bros and Legendary Pictures this weekend are opening 40 more foreign markets for The Dark Knight Rises, which debuted in France Wednesday and Germany and Russia today. Wednesday grossed an estimated $15.1M international from the 23 markets now in release for an overseas cume to date of $125.3M. France opened to €1.7m (US$2.0m) from 892 screens, including previews €2.7m (US$3.3m); UK cume £21.6m (US$33.8m); Korea cume KRW 23.5b (US$20.5m); Australia cume A$19.2m (US$19.7m); Spain cume £4.9m (US$6.0m). Japan opens Saturday. There is no doubt that the Aurora movie theater shooting has dramatically deflated the pic’s box office, especially considering that Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy’s 2nd installment The Dark Knight earned more in its first 6 days (not adjusted for inflation or higher ticket prices) of $222.1M domestic. Overall The Dark Knight Rises is grossing well below Hollywood forecasts even though it was one of the most anticipated films of the year. Neither Fox’s The Watch comedy nor Summit Entertainment’s Step Up Revolution opening this weekend are expected to gross what was hoped.

It’s the word of mouth about the quality of the TDKR, not the horrific events. Even Academy members in the private screening, as reported here a few days ago, agree that it’s average, and some what disappointed. Nothing is more devastating than a loss of loved one, kin, and innocent human beings.
Nice attempt at spin, but no. The movie received an “A” Cinemascore and word-of-mouth has been quite good. The bigger factor was probably, you know, the madman who went on a killing spree during a midnight showing of the movie.
And, of course, international box office numbers look quite good for TDKR. In countries that haven’t suffered a horrific showing during the opening night of the movie, the film’s box office results are outpacing The Dark Knight’s haul (see, for instance: South Korea).
I’m waiting until I can view it at home. Not taking a chance with the crazies in the theaters. There have been several incidents since the one in Colorado. People’s nerves are on edge and I don’t want to get caught in that.
Not going to the movie theatre because of one isolated incident has to be one of the stupidest reasons ever. You’ve got a better chance of being killed ON YOUR WAY TO THE THEATRE than of something happening in the theatre. And it’s not even close. The “other incidents” were not noteworthy in any way and the only reason you read about them is because the media is going overboard in their fear mongering.
Are people really THAT stupid that they think there’s some sort of a drastic rise in movie theatre violence? It’s incredible that people like that are able to live life without accidentally suffocating themselves by sticking a plastic bag on their heads.
Thank you all for not going to the movies this week. I enjoyed TDKR in a theater of only 20 or so others. It was pleasant, it was not noisy, and it was worth the money. Those who don’t allow evil to win will be the winners.
Boxerbuddy, that’s your choice, but I hope you find the guts to just go ahead and watch this great film on the theater screen as it’s meant to be. Our society cannot let idiots rule our lives! Any decent fan of the Batman films will go see the final Bale/Nolan film at the theater.
You gotta be kidding me?!
I don’t know. Cinemascores are usually determined “fresh-from-the-theater.”
But TDKR is having an issue with people turning against it after a few hours or days. It starts to fall apart for some people once the afterglow wears off.
And one has to imagine that the kind of people who still went to the film last weekend in spite of the tragedy, were more inclined to have liked the film in the first place. If the opening weekend had a disproportionate number of hardcore mega-fans to casual moviegoers, then we may be looking at skewed data.
Yes, it’s hard to put too much stock into initial Cinemascore reactions for a film like this, considering how much audiences on opening weekend are skewed towards die-hard fans.
However, regardless of what anyone thinks about the overall quality, the film is obviously not generating the kind of repeat business that The Dark Knight enjoyed. When fans start supporting their arguments by pointing to the movie’s performance in South Korea, you know something has gone wrong.
Part of it may be due to the shooting leaving casual moviegoers feeling cold towards the Dark Knight, but it’s likely a combination of that and the lengthy running time. The most common reaction I’ve heard from people- even those who really enjoyed it- is that they have no desire to see it again anytime soon. The Olympics will likely have an effect as well, since box office is generally down during the summer games.
One thing is clear: As much as fans always like to pretend box office doesn’t matter to them, nothing debunks that claim quicker than a film underperforming.

oh please what rubbish.
So now because you have a gripe with TDNR we should all discount a ‘A’ Cinemascore rating.
please show me a survey, any survey, that supports your following comment as a fact: “But TDKR is having an issue with people turning against it after a few hours or days. It starts to fall apart for some people once the afterglow wears off.”
whoever paid this nutjob to scare people from going did its trick. a survey shows 20-25% of movie goers are still scared.
dang what is wrong with you??? why deny the truth so openly?
I doubt CinemaScores across the board, not just for TDKR. And if it was really outstanding, I would have expected an A+ among at least some groups. You had a hugely hyped capper to a beloved franchise and theaters populated mostly by the biggest fans of the film, and you got a positive reaction. If that doesn’t scream selection bias, I don’t know what does.
I’m also surprised that you imply that someone paid the gunman to scare people from seeing the film? Seriously? I’ve heard of being a fanboy but that’s taking it a little extreme.
I can prove in one sentence that Cinemascores are skewed:
“There are films in the Twilight series that have been awarded “A” Cinemascores.”
That should be enough for you.
You simply CAN NOT take them at face value when an pre-established fanbase is involved. You really do have to account for that added context. (Even when it gets a low score, too, since some fans can be harder on a film for not living up to lofty expectations.)
And I’m not saying this to bash TDKR at all. I’m just saying that CS’s are not the best judge of a film’s quality, and that people’s opinions of a film after a few days are not always how they feel coming right out of the theater.
Average? What movie did you see? LOL.
Agreed. The Dark Knight Rises just wasn’t entertaining. It was long, boring at many times, and pretentious. Between Prometheus, Magic Mike, and Dark Knight Rises it has been a very disappointing summer for movies.
dude if you expected anything great from Magic Mike then you have lost all credibility with me as a “critic for good movies.” TDKR was a solid movie but I think most walked in expecting another Heath Ledger experience and it didn’t happen. I liked it much more the second time once my expectations were settled.
What’s wrong with going into Magic Mike expecting something great? It was directed by Steven Soderbergh, a great director. Sounds like you lose the credibility.
Well people are entitled to their own opinion but from I sat and not being a movie critic my opinion is that “TDKR” is great and the best picture of the year thus far and I seen just about every major release this year. Most people I have talked to also say pretty much the same. I am thinking it will still do very well in the next few weeks.
Just curious since no one seems to be able to answer this with much specifics beyond “I just really like Nolan’s Batman films.”: What was great about it?
Prometheus was incredible (although I know that is not a popular opinion).
Its actually getting great word of mouth…
It has an “A” Cinemascore. Some people should get their facts straight before they post.
It’s really annoying and frustrating that you got to be the first comment — People clapped at our sold out theater after the movie and I’ve heard that from friends from california and michigan who all raved about the movie. I really honestly hope that all of you go to the movies this weekend — just see ANY movie — don’t let this psychopath let us live in fear and allow him to win.
I just saw The Dark Knight Rises at AMC Century City late Thursday afternoon to a full house and the audience gave it a rousing ovation at the end. If the academy members were disappointed, then is just shows what a disconnect they have with film audiences. Hell, they didn’t like The Dark Knight.
Word of mouth has been nothing but positive from what I can tell. Who cares what the old farts at the academy think?
Just saw it and loved. Sure , not as good as TDK. However, people had their expectations high for the TDKR. He would have need to made the Godfather to surpass peoples expectations. Its a great movie. A lot of my friends won’t go to the theater because of the shooting. Actually went to TDKR alone because they chickened out. If this shooting hadn’t happened TDKR would have surpassed TDK earnings.
I will admit I am both a fan of Nolan and Batman but this film was bloated and at times boring. Word of mouth is indeed impacting the box office.
So the box office in foreign markets where people don’t have access to assault weapons is down because of this shooting? That makes even less sense the preposterous idea that 1 in 4 Americans is afraid of going to the movies because of the actions of one loser and his precious guns.
No I am fairly sure they are saying domestic is running a bit slower and international is doing fine. It will likely do around a billion, but with higher international/lower domestic than the Dark Knight. This movies is making and will make a fortune; but if moviegoers continue to be scared, a lot of smaller to mid range films could face some real trouble.
To hell with the shooter. Anyone who wanted to see TDKR should go out & see it. We can’t live in fear because of 1 person. I’m going to continue going to the movies regardless & will of course pray for those in the Colorado shooting.
agreed. I even think Batman’s stance about not using guns is especially necessary. I’m a registered republican but i still can’t justify guns today.
Hopefully you don’t step out of your door all day. You never know what normal non-criminal, non-cop is carrying a gun.
I wonder when this is going to end. The only comparable situation I can think of was when there were a series of shootings related to “Boyz In The Hood” back in the 90s. It may just take some time for people to feel comfortable going to the movies again. Hopefully, eventually, they will feel safe and realize that Aurora was (hopefully) a one-time crime and not a trend.
25% of Movie-goers are stupid. Plain and simple.
I think that numbers a little low
i went and saw it on Monday. Still felt a little weird in light of the recent shooting, but it was too good of a franchise for me to skip the last one in the trilogy.
If i had to guess, you might see some of those people going a little later to the movie than normal.
Saw it two days ago, and I did start to feel uncomfortable during the Stock Exchange shootout. Then I tried to comfort myself by remembering I was in the Cinerama Dome, but that didn’t last long because then I kept thinking, “It’s playing on at least two other, lesser-known screens at the Arclight, why pick the easy-target landmark with the weird concave screen?”
All of which is to say that a more engaging, less overblown story that didn’t wallow and lag might keep everyone focused. Just saying.
It’s clear now that the Aurora shootings have had an effect on the box office of The Dark Knight Rises. Hopefully as people become more comfortable and motivated to go to the theater, and with the good word of mouth of the film, the movie in the end will still do fine. It will do brilliantly on blu-ray and DVD sales.
People need to get a grip and not let the acts of ONE deranged bastard dictate their lives!
25% of movie-goers are stupid. Holmes wanted exactly this. And he got it.
Holmes wanted bad box office for “Dark Knight Rises”? How dumb can you be?
You think he meant Holmes wanted box office when he obviously meant Holmes wanted a wave of negative publicity? How illiterate can you be?
I’m not sure how much the ticket sales are related to the shooting. Remember that the movie did break records (and beat TDK) over the weekend, which means sales are off during the week. More than likely it’s either people busy with the summer, or word of mouth. Probably the latter, the movie doesn’t have the same “YOU. MUST. SEE.” that Avengers had, and I’m not sure it has the same draw for people to go see it again, which might also be why sales are down.
Now I’m not going to lie, when I saw it last Friday night in IMAX it was a little weird after the opening sequence and about a half hour in thinking that I could definitely see why people were confused about what was happening. And my IMAX screening was NOT sold out (although it was close), which I found a little strange.
The shooting clearly had an impact last weekend, as outgrossing a 2008 movie by a couple of million was hardly a huge win for Warner Bros. Prior to the shooting, the film was estimated to be heading for a $190-200 million gross. To fall short by $30-40 million is a pretty sizeable drop.
I do agree it doesn’t have the same “must see” factor that The Avengers or The Dark Knight did. Realistically, audiences typically reserve that crown for one movie per summer. They also have a tendency to lose interest by the time a sequel arrives. People forget that Batman `89 was also a true cultural phenom at the time, whereas Batman Returns wasn’t met with the same level of excitement.
Shtup with that Word of mouth crap, the shooting as obviously hurt the boxoffice, it probably cost at least 20 million on opening weekend.
25% of American movie goers need to grow some f*****g balls.
The reason for the low $125m foreign gross is due to the lack of territories it has been released in, giv it 2 weeks and that figure will go up by like 200-300%
It made a massive $22m hear in the UK on opening weekend.
The foreign gross will not be a problem. Everyone is watching it here in London where you don’t have to wonder if the person next to you has a gun because of strict gun control! This is why this kind of incident only happens in the US.
Movie box-office throughout the world will be affected over the next two weeks by the Summer Olympics.
Tdkr was not disapointing. Perfect ending. It’s all the way the shooting. People at my work have just lost interesting its like the sense of escape with going to movies is gone.
It will gross what the last movie did, just not as quick as they had hoped for it. Those hesitant will eventually change their mind and it’ll make as much money as the last one did.
It’s really stupid how the media wasn’t reporting box office numbers and pulling advertising out of respect. Makes no sense. If someone walks into a McDonalds and kills some people, should you not eat at McDonalds anymore? Why should we let some mentally screwed up lunatic do any more damage than he has? Bottom line, respect and honor the victims, pay more attention to people who you think might be crazy and report them to the authorities if need be, and get out and enjoy yourself at the movies! The true fans aren’t going anywhere.
Word of mouth has actually been very positive. Check out its score on flixter, cinemagig, IMDB, or metacritic all of which give it amazingly high scores.
maybe 25% Of Moviegoers Still Very Hesitant This Weekend because they heard how bad the movie is…
“It’s the word of mouth about the quality of the TDKR, not the horrific events. ”
Uh YEAH. No one will say it, but the movie WASN’T THAT GOOD! Could it be that the audiences just don’t want to see a film that isn’t good?
Fanboys…rise.
Again …
Cinemascore – A
Flixster – 93%
IMDb – 9.1
Metacritic – 8.8
When I saw it, people clapped at the end, which is the first time I had seen such an occurrence outside of a premiere since … well, ‘The Dark Knight’.
It’s a GREAT movie! I can’t wait to see it again!
Word of mouth is hurting it more than the Aurora shootings, especially overseas.
Nice try, but the movie is doing very well overseas (better than The Dark Knight, in fact). And word-of-mouth is quite good in the states as well, where the movie received an “A” Cinemascore.
But keep trying to deny that the Aurora shootings are hurting the film’s box office if it makes you feel better. Just know that the facts aren’t on your side.
Yeah, the article kind of points out that it’s NOT being hurt overseas, but since you seem to have some inexplicable axe to grind, I guess you weren’t going to let facts get in the way.
I saw the movie. It wasn’t very good. Maybe that’s why people are staying away.
The movie received an “A” Cinemascore, so no, people aren’t staying away because the film “wasn’t very good.” In actuality, most people think the movie is quite good.
People are such wusses man. By not going people are just giving this loser more power than he deserves.
This is idiotic. A dozen people were killed in one theater during a viewing, so people are hiding out? Come on. When there’s an airplane crash or a car crash, do we say “oh, we better not fly or drive, because someone was killed in a car/plan accident last week”? Of course not. Because we’re adults with functioning brains.
And the movie was fantastic! One of the best closers to a trilogy in years!
