2ND UPDATE 12:30 PM: Disney announced today that a ‘Marvel Untitled’ movie will be moved to August 1, 2014 after first being dated May 16, 2014. Now sources confirm to Deadline that this film is indeed the intergalactic superhero team Guardians Of The Galaxy coming to the big screen. Unconfirmed fanboy rumors circulating for weeks had this before us, but always secretive Marvel as well as Disney are not confirming anything. It appears the plan is to have the Guardians fight Thanos, the grinning evil purple character seen after the credits in this year’s The Avengers. In the Marvel universe, the time travelling Guardians, who were rebooted in comic form in 2008, consist of Adam Warlock, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Phyla-Vell/Quasar.
This comes just days after Marvel acknowledged it is developing an animated feature film based on the comic book series Big Hero 6. On their already established superhero front, the studio is very busy right now: Disney/Marvel announced in May that there will be an Avengers sequel. Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black, and currently shooting, is set to be released May 3, 2013. Thor 2 is scheduled to come out on November 8, 2013. There also is another Captain America, this time helmed by the Russo brothers and set to come out April 4, 2014. With that timeline and Marvel’s habit of teasing forward in their movies, Guardians Of The Galaxy would be well positioned for the summer of 2014.
PREVIOUS: As usual, with a ridiculous need for secrecy we don’t yet know the title of the Marvel film, but Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures says it is moving to an August 1, 2014 wide release date from May 16, 2014. Will update when we know more.

I’m guessing Captain America 2. Possibly a Hulk reboot.
WOW! Guardians of the Galaxy has always been one of the weakest selling, least popular comic series that Marvel has printed. It’s unfathomable why they would decide to use such a lackluster comic as their new movie franchise.
I have to disagree. I remember when Jim Valentino and Marvel launched GOTG in the early 90′s and it was hot for the first 30 issues before Valentino went to Image. Also the last incarnation of Nova and GOTG was amazing from Marvel.Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning were praised for there writing and the art was always top notch. I thought these were some good issues, unfortunately it did not translate into sales even though CBR and other websites were pumping these titles hard.
it is a risky move from Marvel. An intergalactic movie can be very expensive – cgi all the way. Moreover, GOTG are a very obscure superhero team unlike the Avengers, to whom most folks could relate. Kinda reminds me of Green Lantern – more obscure than bats and supes, expensive intergalactic movie. it might end being a very arrogant move (they probably now feel they could do no wrong with anyhting )
I agree completely, Joe. The Abnett/Lanning run was out of this world: amazing story, incredible character development, more twists than you can shake a cosmic cube at, and some damn funny dialogue.
If it weren’t for that run, I’d have never gotten into GOTG, and I never would have thought I could take Rocket Raccoon seriously; but the Legacy, War of Kings, and Thanos Imperative storylines were some of the best-written comics I’ve ever read.
Yep I read and loved the 90s Jim Valentino ones too, didn’t realise it has had a reboot since, from memory it was cancelled back then when left with all the rest to form Image?
If it’s not that Guardians film, could it be they’ve reconsidered the Hulk as a film franchise post Avengers?
Shit, I already had August 1st taken off just in case this was a movie worth seeing.
But won’t the wait be worth it when they add the new Channing Tatum scenes, and do the re-shoots to bring him into the other story arcs (whatever the film is)?
CAN’T WAIT!!!!
“John Carter 2″
exactly what i was thinking. Avengers works only because of the countless other movies cross-pollinating the characters leading up to it. Spending the time to introduce the audience to each of these new superhero characters will eat into story time, thereby fucking the movie up. Nobody outside a few geeks has heard of this property.
LAME! The person they cast as Untitled’s main villain is TOTALLY WRONG!! Plus, everyone knows that Untitled is more of cosmic hero so why is it partially based on earth!! HOLLYWOOD, STOP DESTROYING OUR CHARACTERS!
Ummm…ok…well, i guess it would be easy to say some snarky remark about this article…..buuuuut, I cant help but think its genius marketing to build buzz around a brand new Marvel film that no one knows about…hmm, makes me wonder which character its going to be based off of…after watching The Avengers, Im surely ready to see what else they have to offer
I don’t wanna get ahead of myself here, but… isn’t May 2014 when the next Spider-Man was supposed to come out?
Couple that with Garfield leaving the studio with a bunch of Avengers books and…
YESSS!!!! CAN’T WAIT!! Untitled is my favorite character!!
The secrecy surrounding this is rather silly, but truth is, I’m more worried about the bad buzz already surrounding Cap2 than some TBD title.
What bad buzz?
Very few were impressed with the choice of directors. And the script is said to be a mess and as far as I know, Joss isn’t doing a re-write this time.
It’s fine. Idiots and haters like you were all over how terrible Avengers looked and was going to be. Someone even said Whedon’s script was crap and never backed it up.
Where are these rumors of the script being bad Alex Gregory and ksb36? I haven’t seen them anywhere. The movie isn’t even going before the cameras for probably a whole other year. So that means they have time to do re-writes now and punch up the script if they want.
The film is supposedly being directed by the Russo brothers, who did You, Me and Dupree/Carpoolers. If you read the article above on CA2, people are saying that there are rumors that the script is crap.
First Avenger was a great film in its own right, and they need a strong script to carry the character further. I hope to God it isn’t another Red Skull retread – give him something new to face, and don’t just stick Evans in again as the underdog character.
All signs point to this being a Guardians of the Galaxy film.
AVENGERS 2
Must be another Hulk remake.
They don’t want this Guardians of the Galaxy film to get in the way of Amazing Spider-man 2′s grosses. Understandable.
Taking August 1 off so I can go to the midnight show!!!!!!
Black Widow The Movie. Come on, if all the guys can have their own movie, then the only female superhero of the bunch is entitled to her. And Scarlett deserves it, she’s back on Broadway next year and she’s to be seen in Under the Skin and Hitchcock. Get it Scarlet !
i wish they would make the widow movie – but very few female-headlined bllock busters come to mind – besides Angelina Jolie’s movies. They still cant make Wonder Woman, the oldest, most established female super hero of all time
Cool! Adam Warlock is one of my favorite Marvel characters from way back. Really interested to see who they’ll cast in the role.
Marvel did such a great job of establishing individual characters leading up to “The Avengers.” Throwing a bunch of lesser known characters up on the screen all at once to try to approximate “The Avengers” asap seems like a bad idea.
If they were trying to approximate The Avengers I don’t think they would choose a team that features a tree and a talking raccoon. But I could be wrong.
Sounds fun. Another uninspired CGI shitfest!
ditto
Spidey is NOT a Marvel property. It is a Columbia property based on a Marvel comic book.
Cap is going to smoke weed and date trashy women in an effort to snag the Ted audience.
Good news! I’m a huge “Groot” fan since way back.
Better off going with a Runaways film adaptation. Guardians may do okay but there is no existing fanbase for this film.
To me, The Guardians are Vance Astro, Starhawk, Yondu, Nikki, Martinex, and Charlie 27, who travelled in their starship, the Captain America.
I don’t know about Guardians of The Galaxy as a movie. Seems more like Watchman 2. This collection of minor Marvel characters into a Superhero team.
I’m more for superhero movies that can stand on their own and that they’re also on a team based in the Marvel Universe. I don’t recall Guardians ever being that popular. They were in a good storyline with the Avengers comics back in the day, but I know nothing about this 2008 new reboot.
I meant Watchmen.
