2ND UPDATE 12:30 PM: Disney announced today that a ‘Marvel Untitled’ movie will be moved to August 1, 2014 after first being dated May 16, 2014. Now sources confirm to Deadline that this film is indeed the intergalactic superhero team Guardians Of The Galaxy coming to the big screen. Unconfirmed fanboy rumors circulating for weeks had this before us, but always secretive Marvel as well as Disney are not confirming anything. It appears the plan is to have the Guardians fight Thanos, the grinning evil purple character seen after the credits in this year’s The Avengers. In the Marvel universe, the time travelling Guardians, who were rebooted in comic form in 2008, consist of Adam Warlock, Drax The Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, Groot, and Phyla-Vell/Quasar.
This comes just days after Marvel acknowledged it is developing an animated feature film based on the comic book series Big Hero 6. On their already established superhero front, the studio is very busy right now: Disney/Marvel announced in May that there will be an Avengers sequel. Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black, and currently shooting, is set to be released May 3, 2013. Thor 2 is scheduled to come out on November 8, 2013. There also is another Captain America, this time helmed by the Russo brothers and set to come out April 4, 2014. With that timeline and Marvel’s habit of teasing forward in their movies, Guardians Of The Galaxy would be well positioned for the summer of 2014.
PREVIOUS: As usual, with a ridiculous need for secrecy we don’t yet know the title of the Marvel film, but Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures says it is moving to an August 1, 2014 wide release date from May 16, 2014. Will update when we know more.

I’m intent on this movie.
don’t know this comic.
i hope it wouldn’t be like captain america, it was lame in comparison to avengers and others.
So Disney wants to make a movie based on Marvel’s thinly veiled Legion of Super-Heroes rip-off and have them fight Jim Starlin’s even more thinly veiled Darkseid rip-off. Sounds like another winner from the studio that brought us John Carter.
Why the Gaurdians of the Galaxy? Nobody reads it! They could have adapted The Defenders, a comic featuring some Marvel heavy hitters who alone might not be able to carry a film but together could be a great show.
Fans would especially love to see Namor the Sub-Mariner and Doctor Strange. The Hulk has been a Defender and Marvel is anxious to use the character again. They could use a Defenders film to introduce Ant Man, a character Marvel wants to use but seems shy about giving a solo film. Other Defender members over the years include Luke Cage, Valkyrie, Nighthawk, Mar-Vell, and Hellcat. Unfortunately former Defender member Silver Surfer would probably be untouchable.
The Defenders would lead into an Avengers sequel much better than Guardians.
Too bad.
The last I heard, Universal Pictures owns the rights to the Sub-Mariner; Silver Surfer is at Fox and I think Luke care is elsewhere.
Dr. Strange is supposed to be appearing in his own Marvel movie, and I am not sure that Ant-Man ever was connected with the group.
The fact that the other characters are all third tier makes it unlikely that they would support a huge franchise, which is why I am baffled by Guardians of the Galaxy, who need The Avengers treatment (individuals films about most of the characters, since most viewers would not have heard of them prior) if they are going to be successful.
Perfect set up for Marvel’s Mega-budget Summer Blockbuster of 2016….The Infinity Gauntlet!
Come on DC, get your asses in gear!

Popularity doesn’t mean lack of quality. I can’t speak for the original GOTG but the 2008 reboot was one of the best reviewed, well written and, frankly, exciting comic books on the market during its short but amazing run. I don’t know how it will translate to the big screen but I for one am excited.
On a side note, anyone notice the article’s author forgot the main protagonist of GOTG, Peter Quill, Starlord?
Well they had to think of someway to tie in Thanos into the movies and the Guardians fit in. Can’t use the dark avengers because of rights so I am looking forward to how they blend them in together.
