BREAKING: Emile Hirsch is in talks to play Navy SEAL Danny Dietz in Lone Survivor, the Peter Berg-directed drama that is being financed by Emmett/Furla Films for a September 25 start in New Mexico. Mark Wahlberg, Taylor Kitsch and Ben Foster are already poised to play the other main roles in the drama centered around four Navy SEALs. Universal Pictures, which developed the movie, will distribute.
An adaptation of the book by Marcus Luttrell (Wahlberg), Lone Survivor tells the harrowing story of how Luttrell and his Navy SEAL team members fought to stay alive after being ambushed in Afghanistan in 2005 by Taliban forces during a covert mission in the Hindu Kush mountain region, where the team went to kill a terrorist leader. Film 44 partner Sarah Aubrey, Akiva Goldsman, Barry Spikings are producing with Emmett/Furla’s Randall Emmett and George Furla, and Wahlberg and Stephen Levinson.
Berg, who covered the Middle East terrain previously with the taut drama The Kingdom, has put in the work on this one. He wrote the Lone Survivor script after embedding with a SEAL team for a month in Iraq, an experience that really gave him a chance to see how they do their job. When I first wrote that the picture was a go as Emmett/Furla stepped up, Berg told me that “Bin Laden’s death has cleared the way for this, a movie that will be an unapologetically patriotic film that honors and pays homage to an incredible group of badass guys who do this,” Berg told me last May. “The mission was similar to the assassination mission that got bin Laden, but things got complicated when they ran into three kids and an old man. Under the rules of engagement, they could have killed them, but they decided to let them go and take their chances, even though they knew these people would likely talk.” Shortly after, the mission had to be aborted when the SEALs found themselves under fire from about 250 Al-Qaeda soldiers. When the dust cleared — and after a rescue helicopter was blown up by a rocket-propelled grenade, 15 SEAL members were killed, and the lone survivor was Luttrell. “A massive land assault was carried out, but by then Marcus was brought to shelter by an Afghan tribe that fought off the Taliban until Luttrell could be rescued,” Berg said. The team’s leader, Mike Murphy, was posthumously awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. This puts Emmett/Furla Films principals into yet another major feature.
It’s the second film Emmett/Furla is doing with Universal, as they are in the middle of 2 Guns with Denzel Washington and Wahlberg.
Hirsch, who’s repped by WME and The Collective, was just seen in Savages and has the David Gordon Green-directed Prince Avalanche with Paul Rudd and Venuto al Mondo with Penelope Cruz.

boy that is one short seal…..
This is fantastic. I had Emile Hirsch or Joseph Gordon-Levitt in my mind for this part after I finished the book and heard this would be made into a movie. I’m so happy that more people will be able to hear this story.
Hahahahah. The Navy Seal community and military community is going to CRUSH this film. Great story, good book, none of the actors cast except maybe Kitsch should be playing navy seals. Ridiculous. Thought this might rival black hawk down, now I know it won’t.
seriously. while i like ben foster, i don’t buy him as a SEAL for a second. And Emile Hirsch? Really? Even Kitsch isn’t believable for me. this movie is gonna suck. it’s a shame.
I can’t think of a worse choice to play a SEAL. What a joke.
Let’s see, a 5’4″, 145lb outspoken liberal pacifist is set to play a member of one of America’s most lethal special forces unit in a story that chronicles unbelievable bravery and commitment to accomplishing an assigned mission – a mission that is about killing America’s enemies.
What could go wrong?
Maybe I should just be glad Demi Moore hasn’t been cast (yet).
short and fat. NOT A SEAL
I’ve said this before… if it’s anything like the book, at least one of the main characters will stop in the middle of the story and start pontificating about how the liberal media hates America and loves terrorists and eagles and apple pie and shit and Texas.
And “short” isn’t a dis qualifier for something like SEALs.
If you’ve ever met a real SEAL, they’re not necessarily ‘big’ guys. Strong. Tough. Yes- but they’re usually around 5’8″ to 6′.
Peter Berg: All sounds fine if you will stop moving the camera so much. When you have good actors and a solid script just let the camera be at rest–or quieter than you usually have it.
Kitsch, Hirsch, and Foster. Three shots of pure box office poison. Mark Wahlberg, you are in danger boy! RUN! Jump ship before they drag you under! Save yourself!
Worst casting choice ever. Why not cast Betty White as a navy seal?
Are you sure he wasn’t cast to play an actual seal? Because that makes sense – he’s about the right size.
Oh, I missed the best part: 5’8″ (generously) Mark Wahlberg is playing 6’5″ Marcus Lutrell.
Jesus, is there one “leading man” left in Hollywood who doesn’t have to stand on stack of apple crates to shoot a scene?
Hugh Jackman
lol I found you one.
Are you kidding me ?? This cast is a JOKE !!!! This movie will truly SUCK !!!!
The story is the movie not the actors. I like the actors so don’t get me wrong I can’t wait to see it. My point is it doesn’t matter who plays the characters, only the real men that lived the story should be thought of while watching this movie!
If this movie can’t be done right, it shouldn’t be done at all. Take a few hints from the Band of Brothers casting they did it right. Don’t insult the men involved with a cheesey half baked self serving rendition of the horrific and solemn experience the SF community endured during OP Red Wings. Do this right.
Everyone’s already condemning the movie based on the cast. Lighten up. All of you are going to see it anyway. I don’t see anything wrong with the cast.
BTW,
Special Forces = Green Berets.
SEALS = SEALS.
Why not use actual SEALS for the movie ( just like in Act of Valor). If there is any group of men, who know how to portray SEALS, it’s SEALS themselves, and I think they would jump at the upportunity to pay their fallen comrades a genuine salute.
Yo easy on blasting this movie based on who they chose for the actors. Marcus Luttrell is happy with the whole process and SEALs will be in it as well. I’m sure it won’t be a cheesy movie that disrespects this amazing story. You sound like a bunch of clucking hens and they haven’t even started yet. STFU.
