The cast and executive producer of the ABC soap General Hospital appeared before critics this morning at TCA, looking and sounding like people thrilled simply to still have jobs. The fate of most of their cohorts on One Life To Live and All My Children weren’t so lucky, with only a few of the cast members — and producer Frank Valentini — absorbed into GH. It was touch-and-go whether even General Hospital would survive the ax.
But it’s back, and as Valentini said, the fact a panel for the show was arranged shows a certain support for the show going forward. “They invited us here, and to me that’s a great sign,” he noted. “They’re behind this 100% and very excited about the 50th anniversary coming up. I’m pretty confident. You just need to watch the show to sort of catch the energy and the momentum that we have, and the network’s a big part of that.” One of the challenges for the show going forward is that it’s being displaced from its longtime 3 PM perch by Katie Couric’s new syndie talk show Katie. But Valentini did his best to put a positive spin on things, calling the time slot change “great” in that it will “shake up the lineup a little bit. And the network is doing a big push to inform the audience about the change.”
No matter the general lack of esteem in which the business holds soap operas, longtime regular Nancy Lee Grahn (who won a Daytime Emmy Award this year) pointed out, “We’re actresses. We get to work every day. It’s essentially the industry in the primetime area that tends to pooh-pooh soap operas a little bit. There’s a little bit of judgment passed there. But you know, we still have jobs. This is a good time in my life to have a job.” That said, its a far different job than it was a few decades ago. Steve Burton, who has been with the show since 1991, noted that the cast and crew is forced do a lot more work now in less time. “When I first started the show in ’91, there were 21 scenes a day we would do. Yesterday we did 78. It truly is amazing what we do and a lot of credit has to go to our crew, which is amazing. But having the wrecking ball poised over us and being on death row has really united us…This is just such an iconic brand and we aren’t ready to let it go.”

But who even watches General Hospital now? Anthony Geary, who has played Luke Spencer on the show since 1978, quipped: “Anyone who works at night like hookers. We’re in fact very big with hookers.”

They’ll probably be dumped after the 50th anniversary. That’s how these things usually go.
Probably right. Why would they bring writers from another soap who was canceled to write GH.Dumbest thing I ever seen. They took GH and writing the same mess they had on OLTL,and OLTL got weird, thats not what GH is about, all the morbid bull, triangles, quads, baby snatching, crazy people who are smarter than the cops.
“Morbid bull?” Like a show in which the mob boss and his paid hit man are the good guys is jolly place? GH under past recent writers and EP’s was the darkest of the dark, with little respect for the women characters as a whole. As for “crazy people who are smarter than the cops”, the aforesaid mod out-smarted the cops day after day. OLTL was not cancelled because of it’s writing or EP. As a matter of fact, it out-produced GH in ratings for most of it’s last year. It was cancelled because the network wanted to get rid of ALL it’s soaps, and that included GH which was very lucky to escape. Sure, it had some wild storylines – it’s a soap. But it’s not as if crazy ladies wandering through tunnels and scientists causing blizzards in the middle of the summer and aliens from outer space are exactly reality based and GH has had them all.
Katie ought to hang it up I will record Gh and watch it at 3.8
I don’t agree with Rory. In fact, General Hospital is a better show, story and acting-wise, than the majority of ABC’s primetime shows.
That doesn’t matter in the business of television. If the ratings were strong enough, they wouldn’t have been shunted about like ABC is doing. Last stop before the end.
One potential way to improve the ratings seems so clear that it defies logic that network executives in the U.S. have not even considered it: move the daily soap operas to a later time. If the soaps were reduced to 30 minutes in length and were shown between, say, 5:00 and 8:00 P.M., just before primetime television hours begin, the ratings would be stronger simply because there are more people around at that time of day, and it would be a lesser investment of time on the part of the viewer. This is the standard format for most of the soaps airing in Great Britain, and so far this has been successful, at least for some shows–”Coronation Street,” for instance, has been on the air for more than 50 years. This is just one idea, of course, but my point is that there are avenues that have been conspicuously ignored by those who should be most interested in exploring them–the networks that produce or air the soaps.
There is no reason that the GH should have to die after its 50th year, nor indeed the American soap opera genre itself. Its death is preventable, albeit with a modest amount of effort and ingenuity–something the American television networks seem to be unfortunately lacking.
Between 5 and 8 pm many mothers are making dinner and putting kids to bed. That was why the news was put on then. Executives way back in the dark ages figured that women would not be interested in “hard news” and put it on at a time “the little woman” would be busy in the kitchen and with the kids. TV porducers as a whole have never been the brightest bulbs on the tree. Just like the ones at ABC and CBS who decided soap fans would watch what ever was shown. Only watch GH on ABC, and Primetime on CBS. My daytime belongs to Netflix. (must be a song in there somewhere)
“Who even watches?” How ironic is that. First you talk about the “lack of esteem” in which the business holds soaps and then you put THAT in your last paragraph? Talk about lack of esteem! Would seem more people watch soap operas than watched “The Revolution”, at least, like a LOT more. Under Mr. Valentini, GH has become a show I can watch again, something it hadn’t been for years. Here’s hoping it sticks around for its 55th anniversary show.
I agree! GH was a show I watched every day and now, with the new team, it has become a show that I can’t wait to watch every day!
They also brought over Headwriter Ron Carlivati from OLTL.
Why? Because OLTL had better ratings than GH when it was cancelled, along with more efficient production and was considered by critics to be the best of the 6 soaps still on the air at the time.
Hopefully they will continue merging the two shows…
Why do you ppl post if you don’t like the show? Why not just keep your holes shut? Sorry but that’s just my opinion. Verona, I agree
Because *SOB* I’m still not over the end of Another World! *runs off in tears*
ABC Soaps have been apart of my life since I was a little girl. My grandmother and mother both has to watch their stories they would say. They were always on the tv at both houses. GH was always my favorite. All the great actresses and actors. I loved Sean and Tiffany Lucy and Kevin. I’m so happy that characters are being brought back like Anna. I always love her.
I would be do disappointed if they canceled GH. I cried the last week of OLTL. I wish they would bring that back.
Frank and Ron have awaken some new and good stuff on GH. I’m glad they are here.
Soap opera actors are the hardest working people to make us believe in their characters 5 days a week,52 weeks a year. Before Valentini took over the reigns,I was barely watching the show.It was the Sonny,Jason<mafia,Craly show. Now its everyone. You can't wait to see what the others can do. Guza ran GH into the ground. Now its exciting once more like back in the Gloria Monty days,Hope its around for a very long time. Kick katie at 2PM or 4PM.$PM worked for Oprah.
TRW is correct. At the time of cancellation OLTL was the best soap on. It was cancelled because soaps didn’t fit Brian Frons’ vision for daytime. The cancellations causes such a backlash that Frons is finally gone. Too late, unfortunately but he’s gone. And Solimge to say that a soap isn’t about triangles, baby switching and murder is ludicrous. And GH not about murder? Really the soap that became the wannabe Sopranos?
I say thank God for Frank Valentini and Ron Carlivati for turning GH back into a great soap
This is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic.
Why are soaps looked down on? GH is not one of the old mindless cliche soaps of the past. This show offers action and suprises and a great cast. I would put this up against any nightime plot oriented show right now. I can’t believe anyone would chose a mindless reality show or a talk show over this.
The writing and pace is picking up. The actors are fun to watch. This is not your ‘Grandmas’ soap’.. This is drama and more in the afternoon..
Tune in and be prepared to get hooked.. Thank you to the writing staff for bringing back the old fun GH of the past.
LOL Jon
The show has gotten a lot better. The new Producer has brought a new energy to a show that has been pretty bad the last few years. Now if they would just deep six the mob part of the show.
This is all just postponing the inevitable. GH is still going to get the axe as soon as ABC finds another low-cost replacement that does moderately well. GH fans liking the show had better enjoy it while you can because it almost certainly won’t last past its 50th anniversary.
GH is looking so strong right now. I look forward to each days new episode! Frank has brought such an energy to the show. I really hope that ABCD is SMART and keeps this show on the air.
I hope they don’t break my heart for a final time and yank GH off the air.
If you haven’t tuned in in awhile, try it, you wont be disappointed!
I think Katie’s show will feel the backlash of soap fans just as the Revolution and GMA in the afternoon last I heard. Soap fans are loyal to their “stories”. I have been watching since I was a young girl. For 30 years. I think the writers are starting to get a feel for the type of cast they have and I believe they are listening to what they want to see in their characters as well ax what the fans are saying. It is exciting to see some of the old characters coming back. But GH has an abundance of talent across the board. More than any other soap. This writing team has a chance in a lifetime to display that talent. Just listen to the fans!
I have been watching General Hospital for over 30 years! Although ABC has unfortunately eliminated all of its other daytime soaps, I am thankful that there is still one soap to watch. I have really enjoyed seeing the old characters written back into the GH storyline lately as well as the One Life to Live crossovers. Keep up the great work writers and cast of GH. We need at least one daytime soap for all the loyal viewers of ABC.
Agree, too bad they are changing time slots
I have been watching the soaps for years and my mother and grandmother have too. Its really sad that they took One Life to Live and All My Children off the air.All of these talk Shows and food Programs are so boring. They have made a lot of viewers not interested in watching tv any more. At least when the soaps were on we had a place we can go and escape from everyday life, even if it was for 2-3 hours a day.Even my grandaughter who is only 14 years old started watching General Hospital she just loves it.I really hope they get rid of the food and talk shows before they consider taking more soaps off the air.
Katie Couric needs to be on at the 4 pm (ct) spot that used to be occupied by Oprah. Or broadcast in the morning after The View. They would be a good lead in to her type of program, as the same type of person would watch both. Leave the afternoon to soaps and soap fans. I turn off the TV after GH, so that way I won’t have to watch her at all. Really don’t plan on watching her now. ABC made a major programming mistake by cancelling the soaps, and are either too blind or too arrogant to admit it. Too bad, ABC used to be such a successful network.
still watching GH, but liked it better before the new producer/writers……
abc bring back, all my children and one life to live,I MISSED THEM from the day on t.v. IT was a disapointment. ABC TAKEN THEM OFF. LOVE GH , SO KEEP GONE GH LOVE MY SHOW.
The current writer is doing a phenomenal job. I have been watching since 1980. He keeps the interest and excitement going. Great great job!! Go General Hospital-love ya!
If oltl was so great why was gh chosen to keep on the air and the other 2 shows got taken off?? These guys are killing me there dragging things out and taking away from the towns who concept GENERAL HOSPITAL!!! HOSPITAL BEING THE KEY WORD!!!
I’ve been a GH fan since at least 1980 as well. It used to be 45 mins when I was kid. At times I’ve lost interest, but recent years have been more entertaining. I didn’t know anything specific about the changes behind the scenes, just that, lately, things have been way more exciting. Mixing in the best characters from OLTL is just genius. Great chemistry. So fun. With so many old characters coming back, I worried GH might be on the chopping block again. I sure hope not.
I am a longtime fan of all ABC soaps. The current regime at GH deserve much credit for revitalizing the show. And they are doing so while respecting us loyal viewers. They are doing a fantastic job in integrating great OLTL characters onto the GH canvas. And bringing back many GH favorites (Heather, Anna, Robert, Duke, AJ and now Lucy Coe!) has been a blast. Amazing and exciting stuff!!! Thanks for rewarding the loyal fans! Keep up the great work Frank and Ron.
i have watched soaps for several years, if they ax gh, iwill not watch anything else. hate katie, reality shows, such as THE VIEW,THE CHEW, DR> OZ. they ate so fake & misleading
