Some of the characters may have left McKinley High and Ohio but practically none of Glee‘s regulars is leaving the show. Additionally, I’ve learned that Chord Overstreet is in talks to return next season, this time as a regular. Overstreet joined Glee in Season 2 as a recurring, left at the end of the season and then came back midway through Season 3.
At the end of last season, which saw several seniors from the New Directions glee club graduate, series co-creator Ryan Murphy extended an open invitation to all 15 regulars to return for Season 4. It appears that virtually all accepted it and are set to come back, though not everyone will be in every episode. Leading couple Lea Michele and Cory Monteith are among those likely to be in most if not all episodes. Also coming back are Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Chris Colfer, Naya Rivera, Kevin McHale, Darren Criss, Amber Riley, Jenna Ushkowitz, Jayma Mays, Dianna Agron, Mark Salling, Harry Shum Jr and Heather Morris. Their workload will vary as the show once again will work to accommodate the large cast and make room for some new characters. (Glee has already booked Kate Hudson and Sarah Jessica Parker for multi-episode arcs.) In addition to storylines reasons, some cast members may have reduced presence on the show as they pursue other projects, including features, theater and music.

It always amazes me that enough people are still watching Glee to justify it getting a new series.
People got invested in the characters early on and even when stories involving a teacher-pupil relationship or an adopted child went off the rails, plus one whitney tribute too many, many of stuck in there. But it has made fans a little bitter, perhaps even entitled. Personally, I was hoping for a spin-off – ideal for those of us rooting for Finn and Rachel but who aren’t as keen on seeing Mr.Shue, Blaine or the other newbies. But again I will stick in there to see what happens to my favorites.
The juggling of such a large cast has created a lack of confidence in how they are going to pull season 4 off as this was one of the big issues of season 3. Unfortunately, the show burned a lot of bridges last summer with the casting fiasco and they have to promise to keep all the characters or risk another potentially fatal fan backlash.
They should let some of them go. I mean, the actors who played seniors last season should move on. Glee should be renewing its cast every three years, to make things fresh. After all, the audience gets used to new faces. Keep the same people over and over again isn’t creative and overexposing Lea Michelle, Colfer and Naya Rivera will hurt the show, as the ratings have proven.
Yeah, I think they’re afraid they’ll lose viewers by axing the main three Cory, Lea and Chris.
Watch the finale and you see why they can’t let the seniors go: Cory Monteith and Lea Michele were remarkable all the way through but particularly in the ‘break-up’ scene at the station. They are just very good actors who draw a massive response from the audience because of the emotional depth to their scenes.
They do not even slightly have that in anyone left behind in the choir room who can deliver that however much they have over-expose Darren Criss or the Glee Project kids. I would beg them to have certain of the obvious non-actors move on because it is painful watching at times. Fans will come on here and bemoan that their favorites should have all the screen time but Fox will know who tests well and who they can’t afford to lose.
Yeah because all shows should have cast overhauls every three years– same cast seems to work for NCIS, greys anatomy, 30 rock and any other long running series
So glad chord over street is getting to be a series regular
Well, those shows aren’t focused around high-schoolers. Aren’t some of these actors playing 17 year olds now in their ’30s?
You clearly do not watch the show — most of the cast graduated and will follow life after graduation.
Grey’s Anatomy has certainly overhauled their cast….just gradually not all at once:
Season 3: Kate Walsh left for her spinoff and Isaiah Washington left
Season 5: TR Knight and Brooke Smith
Season 6: Katherine Heigl
Season 8: Chyler Leigh, Kim Raver and several others are in limbo
If Grey’s was still focused on the initial core 5, imo it would be incredibly stale by now.
There are only so many story lines that Glee can explore with the same cast….they should be phasing them out in pairs or threes to evolve.
Glee is only on season 4? It feels like season 12.
The cast is huge and they continue to overuse Rachel, Finn, Kurt, Blaine and Santana. It gets boring (especially since the writing on this show is awful). Season four sounds like a giant mess.
…not a reg viewer of the show ( recently) though i applaud keeping the cast intact with varying degrees of focus depending on the episodes and arcs… also think it’s good to follow grads after high school , so they can address the issues of the day for that demo musically … difficult job prospects, university , student debt ,etc.
Glee is based on a high school music club whose members are underdogs… well, it was.
Watch Glee’s ratings drop heavily next season (~20-30%). The show is a complete mess creatively and the show has provided a natural end point to let viewers abandon the show.
Of course, Fox is in an NBC-esque tailspin, which should guarantee renewal next season regardless, especially as the production company has leverage over the costly current cast.
Rachel and Finn are the two characters that desperately need to be backburnered,….
To you, maybe. Rachel and Finn are the only two characters that continue to hold my interest. I’ll be tuning in for Season 4 just for them.
Actually, to a lot of people they need to be blackburned. It’s one thing if a couple and characters are interesting and it’s justifiable for them to dominate as much as they have. There is no reasonable reason that is justifiable for them to be on say 21 out of 22 episodes.
What are you watching for them to be the ONLY two characters that hold your interest? I would love for them to backburn them and actually write for other characters like Quinn, Puck, Santana, Kurt, Blaine, etc. It’s absolutely ridiculous that the season finale focused on Rachel as much as it did. Am I fan of hers? Sometimes. Was I glad she finally made it to New York, on her own? Absolutely. However, what is Puck going to do? What is Kurt going to do now that NYADA/New York aren’t options? What about Quinn? Santana? Even Finn and his enlistment.
The simple fact of the matter is Glee is a former shell of itself and the constant shoving and pimping of Finn, Rachel, and Finchel have turned fans out. Of course, lack of definitive writing, plots, and characterizations have played a part but it seems that when the dust clears; they have Finn, Rachel, and Finchel in tact. Even when they weren’t in the right and should have had to pay or at least be called out for their actions.
I’d say the 50% of viewers who stopped watching Glee this season would agree Finchel needs to either just end completely or get really, really backburned. Especially Finn.
Your supposed ‘facts’ have no foundation whatsoever in reality. Finn was on screen for around 8 minutes in the first three episodes in total (I won’t go into the reasons) and the testing showed the majority of the GA wasn’t happy. Like it or not, the majority of the viewing public are hooked on the ‘Finchel’ story. And while ‘Klaine’ is popular in the fandom it has created real issues for the show’s general appeal. I actually felt more positive about the show’s future when I thought they would be strict in reducing the cast numbers.
I agree. Finchel has to be the worst to ever happen on TV.
Oh, this show. Used to be good but they ruined with the preachness and the abuse of some characters like Rachel, Finn, Kurt, Blaine and Santana. Season 3 was a disaster and I think is gonna be worse in season 4.
These musical fad shows never last more than a few seasons – remember “The Partridge Family” and “The Monkees”?
Haven’t had good ideas for these characters in 2 1/2 years… why not bring them back?
NO! please ryan if u read this. DO NOT FOCUS NEXT SEASON AND FINCHEL!!! Oh my god it will ruin the show!
SIlly people if they get rid of Michele, Monteith, Colfer and Rivera they’re toast the show will officially go in the toilet.
I enjoy the new characters introduced this season more.. Rory, Joe, Sugar, Harmony and Unique/Wade.. so tired of Santana, Brittany, Rachel and Finn.. if they don’t bring back the aforementioned.. won’t be watching at all.
Sugar, Joe, and Unique/Wade work quite well. All three should return.
Harmony was awesome, but she didn’t get much screen time. I’d like to see her enter as a full time cast member — could cause some friction because Rachel’s leaving probably has a lot of people believing they could take her place as big diva and then enters Harmony.
But let’s face it. Rory was an epic fail.
Glee is one of the best shows on tv and my favorite by far. So excited for season 4.
GLEE is supposed to be about high school. Let the graduates move on to a spin off if Ryan Murphy desires. But keep the show about a high school choir with all the lower classmen of season 3 returning. The seniors graduated – let them move on and let the others have their turns to get bigger story lines.
Eh, the high school formula is exhausted at this point. The whole point of Glee was that they were the underdogs and came together over their differences. Sue and Will are friends now, the school loves Glee, and there’s not really any point to it anymore. They should have just given the high school aspect that Nationals ending, it was the perfect end to Glee, imo.
Amen to that! If they stop now, they’ll go on a bang, which is what people want(ed). If I have to watch an episode of “Rachel making it in NY”, then I prefer not to watch it at all, because that defeats the whole purpose of the show. Winning Nationals, being respected at school, it truly was the perfect end.
The voice of reason! amen
Rachel in NYC making it in theatre? Kate hudson? Sounds boring.
cause it’s amazing!!!
I dissagree with some of the comments.. D: I don’t get used to new faces.. I feel like the show is completely different without the mains.. Which you know, could be good, make it a whole new type of show.. I’d probably eventually get used to it…
I watched the first season of Gunslinger Girl and it was amazing, mainly because of the art.. Second season, the art was minorly changed and … The show is great still, they’re all the same people.. Same effects.. But I just can’t get over those details.. Meh, I’m iffy on the whole thing. But I like that our cast is still together
People vow not to watch Grey’s Anatomy anymore because one character dies. ONE. So any comments about an overhaul is stupid.
totally agree with you! They give us these characters and we feel like we KNOW them… that’s WHY we continue to watch season after season!
It’s strange that most of the comments here are just glee-haters who don’t seem to even watch the show — season 3 was creatively their best season since the first 13 and a night and day improvement over the horrible season 2 — where there were no story lines, no story arcs and music for the sake of music. This past season was great because the shows incorporated songs that added to the story — they got more character development and many social issues — especially an emmy worthy performance by dot marie jones as coach. If you all don’t know, Glee will air on Thursdays at 9 after the x factor/idol results show.
Um.. is this comment for real? Every single character in season 3 was destroyed. Santana had the most offensive coming out story line I’ve ever seen on tv, Rachel’s character was a shell of who she was in season 1, Quinn was still nuts, Brittany got turned into a catatonic mentally challenged 3 year old, every single woman was portrayed as weak and helpless while relying on men to rescue them, and any important social issue they did try to tackle was rushed and forgotten about within 15 minutes.
I would watch season 2 again every day instead of watching 1 episode from season 3. The episodes were at least entertaining and enjoyable to watch instead of overly offensive and completely boring. In my opinion, a season in which a show loses 50% of their viewers is a big red flag that it was a giant ball of suck.
I totally agree with you grant! Jake, I am not a glee-hater. I watch the show and I enjoyed the show. But the truth is Glee was amazingly new and beautiful because it “spoke” differently, a new language that you didn’t use to see on TV. Season 3 was the absolute opposite. Everything was predictable, many (oh so many!!!) things were offensive in so many ways (the coming out was probably the worst), everything was written as if every character had mood swings every 5 seconds… it was NOT good. The end of the season was ok, because it’s what people wanted. But, as Grant, I’ll take season 2 any day!
I don’t want any of the Glee Cast leave the show!!
The reality is that the concept of keeping all of the regulars is a fail safe. It’s no secret that the show has suffered in ratings and creativity. Ryan Murphy simply is hedging his bets by keeping all of the characters. This way he pleases those who are attached to the original cast. Lea Michelle is, without a doubt, the most talented member of the cast and can pull off great solos. Don’t forget that a great deal of the show’s income is derived from music sales… a lot of them coming from Michelle. The 2 characters added from the Glee Project and the other additions (Sugar, Charice) have been failures. If the show had deleted more than half of its regulars, odds are that it would have had a quicker demise.
I’m just glad Chord Overstreet is in talks to become a series regular. I’ve always thought that he is a great addition to the cast. I hope that they write for him next season and not just use him as another prop. I think he’s one of the great male actors..
in the cast..
Glee is a sinking ship and everything since the ending of 1.22 (Journey) has been them trying to fix their mistakes. Season 2 was a complete disaster. No direction, no focus, no drive, no motivation. Nothing that was in that season was character driven and meant to build them up for the upcoming and pending senior year. Season 3 was much better than Season 2 but what exactly does that mean?
Glee spent a whooping 11 episodes to close out the season in an under 8.0 rating with one of them being a 6.01 rating. People are tuning out to this show. You have to wonder exactly why that is. Season 3 was all over the place. Yes, they focused on new members and had episodes where other people besides Finn, Rachel, and Kurt were the focus. However, those episodes were few and far in between. The first 14 episodes is when they were at their best. After episode 14, everything was put into hyper drive for no reason whatsoever. They had time to pace and to write properly and yet they didn’t.
Glee always tended to be off longer than necessary this season. The constant breaks in between episodes was disastrous to the plots. Case in point, Episode 14. They had an entire month off, if not more. This was the final time in which the audience was to assume that the original cast was going to be together and it was handled poorly. Glee has never been known for it’s continuity but it seemed like if they wanted the plot to work, they just pretended that things didn’t exist before and wrote whatever the heck they wanted.
Case in point, Brittany’s 0.00 GPA. No one can actually obtain and maintain a GPA of 0.00 and still be in public school and no one hasn’t stepped in to improve this. She can’t be Senior Class President NOR on the Cheerios with a 0.00 GPA. Extracurricular activities such as those require a certain GPA to make the team and stay on the team. Brittany has never been on the smart side but she’s never been completely stupid either. Of course there was the multitude of other moments where things didn’t make sense like Rachel getting her second time to audition for NYADA after choking on her first audition (no talent scout/director is going to come to Nationals and watch you perform for your second shot; you either get it the first try or that’s it), the fact that it seemed not one of them were able to make deadlines for colleges and acceptance letters going out extremely later than they would be, the entire storyline in the finale concerning Quinn and Puck was obvious fan pandering, the fact that David Karofsky attempted suicide and then that was all we heard of him once we found out he was living and the list could truly go on.
Glee lost their shot to bring in new talent and new characters. Even in this contest with the Glee Project, fans will not care about the new additions because they don’t manage to weave them into an already over expanded cast. Ryan Murphy once said that no one wants to see them in high school for 6 years. Which is slightly true. Where he is wrong is in the manner that this show could have been handled and developed. Instead of trying to cover an entire school year in one season, I would have preferred them to do it in semester installments. Considering they went from their sophomore to senior year, that gives you about 2 semesters per year and that’s 6 years right there. Yes, this could have become a problem with how people perceived it and the ratings but it certainly couldn’t have hurt to try this regime.
While the first 13 episodes of Glee was amazing, better spacing would have made it even amazing than it already was. We should have gotten to know these characters more than we did. There was absolutely no reason for Rachel’s Dads to have been introduced to us in Season 3 nor should we have had been introduced to Mike’s father as late as we did either. Get into their family lives. Get into their lives and social standing within the halls of McKinley. Yes, we know that there was slushies and bullying throughout the school but what else is there happening. We could have gotten to know the minor characters as if they were the main characters and weaving in new ones wouldn’t feel like such a shock in this manner that they have brought in new characters.
That was a lot and I’m sure there is more that could be said but the overall thing is Glee has lost it’s thunder and I’m almost certain that with the way things are going; Season 4 will be their last.
Your comment is perfect. That´s exactly what I think.
I totally agree with you! I used to like Glee, now it’s just the Rachel/Kurt/Santana show…
The writing for Rory was another example of offensive writing. A leprachan? It’s not easy being green? I think Damian McKinty is very talented but he didn’t have a chance with the story line and song selection.
