EXCLUSIVE: I love meta-producer Scott Rudin because he always makes news. (And gives
everyone around him heart palpitations every time I call.) So here’s the latest: HBO and Rudin have ended their exclusive deal. Rudin’s reps tell me the reason is so that Scott can have “more flexibility” during his first foray into television. ”You know how full they are. He wants to sell elsewhere.” But another source emails me this, which Rudin’s camp strenuously denies:
“HBO is so tired of Scott Rudin’s antics that they terminated his overall deal yesterday.” The end follows such Rudin dissapointments as HBO in May deciding not to go forward with the Noah Baumbach/Rudin pilot The Corrections. Based on Jonathan Franzen’s acclaimed book, it boasted one of most star-studded casts ever assembled on television: Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Greta Gerwig. Attempting to bring Franzen’s book to the screen — something that had been tried unsuccessfully on the feature side for a decade — was considered a big swing. Word is HBO brass liked the performances but the decision came down to adapting the book’s challenging narrative. Needless to say, Rudin was not pleased.
At this point it’s unclear how the severed deal will affect all of Rudin’s HBO projects, so many I can’t even keep them all straight. Of course there’s Aaron Sorkin’s The Newsroom now going into its second season, Ben Stiller’s comedy pilot All Talk which he’s directing and producing and acting in, writer-comedian Harris Wittels’s comedy, first-time filmmaking duo Lisanne Pajot’s and James Swirsky’s Sundance documentary Indie Game which Rudin was developing as a fictional half-hour comedy series. And probably scores more.

….the art of fielding….
Rudin seems to have taken his Broadway approach to TV. Based on his clout and incredible track record, he can get A-level actors to do theater and television. Great idea, very commercial idea, and I bet other big film producers follow the trend.
All of you newbies trying to get into the industry — if you want to live long — don’t ever work for Scott Rudin. He will make you nervous and probably give you an early heart attack.
Say what you want James…Scott always always delivers! I did three movies with him as a 2nd Assistant Director – Addams Family, Addams Family Values and Sister Act…When it’s all said and done the proof is in the pudding…can you say the same?? Just Saying.
I’m with Ian.
I’m with Ian as well, and I worked for Rudin as an assistant. The man is a genius, hands down. If you learn how to handle him, you will learn more than anywhere else in the industry. And handling him is nothing compared to handling most actors on set. At least with Scott, there’s a decipherable logic.
Great Minds Think Alike and so do ours!!!
Newsroom is the worst show in HBO history and everyone knows it including HBO. it’s just too much Sorkin, he has too much power now and everyone there is too afraid of him and Ari to say that the emperor has no clothes. So afraid that they gave a garbage show a second season. Social Network worked because Fincher took the great script and said ok thanks for the words Sorkin now get the hell out of here, this is my movie. Newsroom needed that too.
There is no spoon.
Worse than Arli$$?
Or Boardwalk Empire? That show is dead in the water.
Dead in the water as in “just got nominated for an Emmy for Best Drama Series?”
HBO has to pay for the set. That’s why it’s still on.
I’m sorry but you couldn’t be more wrong. The show is great. Every week has been a very good episode and I’m already hooked into the characters. Yeah, I know it’s heavily dramatized & silly at times, but that’s what TV is. It’s not supposed to be a documentary. It’s an entertaining show that uses past events to tell stories through likable characters. You hate it? Don’t watch it. But for every person who is railing against it I think there are thousands who love it. Sorkin is a master storyteller and his dialogue is fun to listen to. I wish I could write as good as he can.
Dear “A Writer,”
“…write as good as …” Study the English language a little more and maybe one day you can hope to write even GOODER than Sorkin.
That comment wasn’t necessary. It was mean and hurtful, actually. You knew what the writer meant and that’s what great tv writing is about–communicating effectively, not perfectly.
I wish I could write as well as he can.
I’m a big fan of Sorkin’s, but the Newsroom is a shit sandwich. It’s just terrible on every level and I’m sure HBO knows it and will cancel it after next season. Everyone is allowed to miss, but Aaron should think carefully about his next series and in particular about maybe bringing on some talented collaborators to help shape his work. Personally, I think The Comeback was the worst show HBO ever did (an entire series built on a single joke!) but Arliss and the Newsroom would get nominated.
+1
So… you’re watching it right? Clearly, you’re smart enough to only judge things you know.
And the real losers are anyone who wanted to see a Robert Moses mini. Sad that this never happened. It’s an amazing story about an amazing man and Rudin’s craziness means we may never see it.
A tiger does not change its stripes. Rudin has always employed aggressive tactics and passive aggressive tactics like leaving messages for directors and executives at early morning or late evening hours when he knows they are not there to take the calls. His games or strategic decisions for interacting with people he does business with are legendary. I only know a few. There are no doubt countless more as others can attest to. He seems the bully type…not averse to throwing cell phones and worse, though I hear some of that behavior has toned back in the last ten years. So it doesn’t surprise me that perhaps the HBO execs got tired of his shenanigans. Good projects or not, life is too short to be treated as poorly as he’s treated many.
All the bullying and aggressive tactics in the world won’t get you very far when the project sucks. Creatives tend to line themselves with the bullies (including some agents and lawyers) because they frequently are not the best (and this is observation, not criticism) at pushing things forward and asserting power plays, and guys like Rudin go to bat for them. But once at bat, its the project that hits it out of the park!
Items like this cause me to have involuntary displays of schadenfreude that are almost downright vulgar. Shame on me.
I still don’t get why THE CORRECTIONS was so difficult to adapt. The book I read wasn’t. Methinks the true causes are something else entirely, and we are being spun mightily.
Oh boy. Could the great, untouchable one finally be seeing a little weakness in that armor? That house of cards is finally collapsing.
“it boasted one of most star-studded casts ever assembled on television: Chris Cooper, Dianne Wiest, Ewan McGregor, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Rhys Ifans and Greta Gerwig.”
I like this cast, but McGregor’s the closest to being a star. The others are respected names.
Why deal with a Rudin when there are PLENTY of other talented producers out there who will refrain from his legendary nastiness?
never met the man. sure he’s a total fucking nightmare. still stand behind him, because he stands his ground.
The script of The Corrections was lousy and Noah couldn’t direct TV. He never finished his very generous says, didn’t get enough coverage so the editing room didn’t have what they needed. It was damn shame but he could adapt or direct it. But he was sexy in that HBO way that Richard Plepler and the marketing department love. It used to be a great idea was what HBO wanted and now it has to Mildred Pierce written and directed by Todd Fields. It was like watching the Marie Callendar story. So dull. But HBO was fired up.
Showtime is where quality lives on TV. AMC too. With all their star fucking HBO deserves what they get.
thats right anonymous, hbo deserves what they get…..more Emmys than anyone else. You may not have liked Mildred Pierce, and you seem to know all about The Corrections misfire, but you cannot deny HBO is the best in business, it’s just a fact. But maybe you are a big Episodes fan? Or He’ll on Wheels? Sure, quality stuff.
Episodes is brilliant, Mad Men and Breaking Bad are two of the best shows to ever be on the tube. HBO needs to stop being obsessed with the pedigree of actors, writers, directors, producers and just make some fantastic scripts. Content is what makes TV great. A gripping story well written is what hooks an audience week after week. Did anyone outside Hollywood know who Chase was who wrote Sopranos? Did anyone care? Same with Breaking Bad. Just great shows, no stars, just talent to burn. HBO used to know how to do this. Now they’re just star fuckers and it’s sad.
Episodes is brilliant? First time those words have been uttered. And is this really a “sad” situation? Come on, grow up. Hbo has three Emmy nominated comedies and 2 dramas. Sopranos blah blah blah, that was 10 years ago. Mad men and breaking bad are great. Good job amc. And what will they follow it up with? Try being great year after year after year like HBO has.
Rudin can’t play by network rules — although NBC could come calling and bend for him…
But let’s be serious – the old grey mare ain’t what she used to be.
Was GOLIATH one of Rudin’s as well? The article doesn’t mention it, but I seem to remember it was his. That was another HUGE mistake for HBO. A WIRE-esque series about the capital punishment system in Texas with Kyle Chandler playing the lead. The pilot made me cry and then, like an addict, beg to read the other drafts, anything more. WHO IS GOING TO PICK UP THAT SHOW!? But I guess now Rudin can take it anywhere. Hooray.
His name should not be Rudin but Rude One. Talent or no talent his games are bullshit and played. He’s got a problem. Bravo HBO to cut him loose. Delivering is one thing, throwing everyone into therapy to suit his whims something altogether different. Enough with acting like your interested and calling people so you know they are not avail? What are you fucking 10? At one point when you crap on enough people, regardless, people get sick of it. Pack up your own shit and don’t make your, “be happy your work for me” assistants do it. jackass
It was Todd Haynes’s “Mildred Pierce.” I try not to get caught up in superlatives. But that was the most interesting “re-make” I’ve ever seen. He took the original material and the original movie and made one fictional woman’s story the story of women in the twentieth century. In theory static-y, in fact it ran the gamut. Not surprised that he dedicated it to his mother who was no doubt (in his eyes,) like his H.B.O. series, a seamless meshing of style and content. Mike Nichols played with similar themes (genuine vs. theatrical basically; art vs. artifice and the troubling line between the two) in his Broadway production of “The Country Girl” which was very under-rated.
NEWSROOM is terrible. It’s so bad. The other day my cousin, a musician with no narrative writing experience, but a lover of film and tv and the farthest thing from a snob, was sitting there predicting each successive dramatic punchline. Literally. I was shocked by his accuracy.
It’s bad enough that he was disinterested enough to engage in this classic exercise, but that he was right every time!
“I’m in.”
Come on. What?
You were in after the pilot.
What is your point?
You have none.
You wrote yourself into a hole and there was no great director there to guide you out. It’s not that complicated or uncommon. And it happens to the best. It’s okay. You wrote ‘A Few Good Men,’ ‘Social Network’….you done good.
Good job.
But Newsroom is not good enough for HBO.
Lets move on.
Rudin drove HBO crazy with his traditional antics, and while that behavior is part of what makes him a great producer, and is often a necessary means, it’s also why this deal ended. He’s a rare breed in the film community for always doing high quality material that attracts awards and talent, and while studios need him for that, unfortunately for him HBO doesn’t. They will give the talent like Sorkin the creative room to breathe on their own, and don’t need someone like Rudin doing that for them… it’s an unnecessary middle man for them, and they probably didn’t like being told how to play their own game by an outsider.
Well said. And very true.
