The News Corp CEO kicked a hornets’ nest a few hours ago with this post: “Scientology back in news. Very weird cult, but big, big money involved with Tom Cruise either number two or three in hierarchy.” He was back soon afterward: “Watch Katie Holmes and Scientology story develop. Something creepy, even evil, about these people.” One responder wanted to know what he thinks about Mormons, to which Rupert said: “Mormonism a mystery to me, but Mormons certainly not evil.” The comments had a predictable effect: “Since Scientology tweet hundreds of attacks,” Rupert writes. “Expect they will increase and get worse and maybe threatening. Still stick to my story.”
Murdoch appears to be more ambivalent about GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. “Met Romney last week,” Murdoch says. “Tough (Obama) Chicago pros will be hard to beat unless he drops old friends from team and hires some real pros. Doubtful.” That followed a similarly critical tweet last week. “When is Romney going to look like a challenger? Seems to play everything safe, make no news except to burn off Hispanics.” Still, in today’s tweets Murdoch seems to agree with Romney’s view of the main question in the race. “US election is referendum on Obama, all else pretty minor.” Asked how much capital he has donated to Romney, Rupert says “None!” Someone else noted that “There will be no phone tapping in US election,” adding that “your folks” messed up the economy and now “expect overnight fix.” Rupert answered: “my folks! Come off it, let’s have serious discussion.”
On a side note, one follower wanted to know when Murdoch might bring his son, Lachlan, back into the upper echelons of the company calling him “the most effective and well-respected executive in Australia.” Rupert’s response: “Thank you, the door will always be open for him.”

This man is in way too much denial to be both a public figure, as well as controlling the media. A shrink would very quickly say, “Scientology? Isn’t he also talking about the Cult of Murdoch?” Very weird cult, with big, big money involved, that Fox Corp.
Nope. Big money involved in all of the media complexes – Murdoch, Disney, all of them. But you don’t have to pay through the nose to stay in and you can leave at your own free will. Not a Fox watcher but its a lot easier to turn the dial than to walk away from COS.
Yeah, but like… the other ones are crazy….
Well, it takes someone creepy and evil to know someone creepy and evil.
Exactly. The stories Kidman could tell….
“Something creepy, even evil, about these people”
pot meets kettle…
HA! Good one! I’d say mormanism is evil, but not as evil as foxentology.
“Something creepy, even evil, about these people.”
Seriously dude? Hey Rup, look in the mirror dude.
Don’t have too much respect for murdoch’s business ways but I really liked his tweets! Scientology is certainly associated with some bizarre and wicked ways, and good that someone who has some PR attention for speaking up against it!!!
Well Hello Jill, I am with you on this one, any organisation that perhaps forcefully prevents another persons freedom of thought should be closed down as its gotta contradict at least one of the amendments. However until people of equal wealth speak out against them nothing will change.
Rupert belongs in jail in England along with the rest of his News Corp. flunkies they are all guilty of crimes. Scientology is a Ponzi scheme and they could easily be shut down and prosecuted under the RICO statute for embezzlement and money laundering and lots of other charges. They are a cult they don’t deserve any religious protection it’s not a real religion. When will a city district attorney or a stae attorey general have the guts needed to go after them?
Upside to this: only someone with deeper pockets than the Church of Scientology can take on the Church of Scientology.
And it’s not like they’re going to find any dirt on him, I think the British Government already has that covered.
I know a ton of people hate Murdoch and how his company slants the news in the opposite direction of CNN and MSNBC, but he is 100% right about this. Scientology should not have the status of a religion. They are a cult and a criminal organization. I’m all for the first amendment and the right to freedom of religion, but when a group is responsible for organizing the largest government infiltration of all time (Google “Operation Snow White” if you’re not familiar with it) it makes no sense to me how it can be considered a religion.
It is obvious what he is doing (deflection), but that doesn’t make him wrong. CO$ is creepy. Maybe its nothing, but is comes off creepy.
Romney isn’t running a smart campaign. I won’t be voting for him, regardless, but he isn’t running smart.
Mormons are awesome. Auto DDs.
Awesomeness!
Strange Murdoch should be tweeting while his UK empire is under siege. If I were his lawyer, I’d tell him to stop.
Stranger still how he still casts himself as a regular guy when people of his class profited from, then destroyed the global economy (as was pointed out), and a “news” network that he owns pushes willful disinformation to seniors, hillbillies, and disgruntled white men to massive ratings and profits.
Happy Sunday to you all.
Hey, as crazy as he is, he’s RIGHT.
Wow. I never thought I’d actually like something Murdoch said.
Anyone who bothers to do any research or reading about Scientology would agree with Mr Murdoch. It is very evil, creepy and scary really. I have friends in it, and they are so strange now. Total changed them and they talk about Ron Hubbard and his books and beliefs all the time, it is annoying. It is a cult. Check it out, they do not really hide what they believe, which is they are chosen from an alien race, the rest of us are bad and have thetans inside us that only Scientology can remove for us. Not kidding her or exaggerating.
The three ‘R’s” of Rupert.
Rupert’s problem is that he has mixed up being ‘Relevant’ and being ‘Reviled’. He will never have the time to ‘Rehabilitate’ his image.
I am going to investigate Scientology for myself. If some of this WHACK stuff I’ve been hearing is true, I am amazed that intelligent people would believe this tripe. I am investigating…
Ok – get back to us.
Scientology makes no more or less sense than Christianity and the rest of that silliness. Cruise’s belief fills the same gaps in reality that Romney’s and Netanyahu’s fill — this magical thinking is the curse of modern man.
You are a complete idiot and you opinion means absolutely nothing.
Boogety-boogety boo! Thanks for believing in me! You’re so smart and ‘you opinion’ means everything!
Scientology is not a religion, even if they bullied the IRS to get that status. Religions do not charge money for admission or continued participation. Religions do not require that members disconnect from their family. Religions do not silence critics and detractors by any means possible. Religions do not set up unrelated proxy organizations to recruit the unwary. And so on …
And religions do not aggressively infiltrate top government agencies on a mission to destroy all “unfavorable” material regarding their “religion” (Google: “Operation Snow White”).
And religions do not actively conspire to have journalists committed, imprisoned or framed for crimes, because they’ve written negative articles or threatened to expose the truth behind their church. (Google: “Operation Freakout”).
christianity has its faults for sure, namely many “followers” who don’t follow its most basic tenets. however, it’s been around for centuries and has withstood the test of time. it’s writings have been debated and scrutinized by theologians and historians from all walks of life, and although there are christian cults, that’s not the case with all christian denominations. whereas scientology is definitely a cult by every definition and was invented in the 1970′s by a sci-fi writer. also, believers must pay money to move up the levels to even learn about their faith.
Awesome comment! Very well conveyed.
Yeah, what god said…
I both agree and disagree. I think all religion involves magical thinking, but there’s a place in our culture and in our lives for magical thinking. People need something to love unconditionally. For some, it’s themselves. For others, it’s “achievement.” Or the pursuit of scientific knowledge. Or altruism. For Scientologists, it’s Scientology. I’m okay with that. If I wasn’t, I’d probably devote myself to an industry that was less… uh… magical.
YOU ARE SO RIGHT!
Religions and cults alike are utter madness. The lot of them!
There is no need for theological beliefs in today’s modern world where most things can be explained by science.
I for one am pleased to have my mind free of any type of religious/cult lunacy.
Was the $260+ million gross for KNIGHT AND DAY just not enough for Rupert to show Cruise some gratitude and courtesy by shutting the f*** up?
News Corp vs. Scientology– I’d pay to see that!
Me too — but only if mutual destruction is assured.
Am I the only one who is impressed simply that Rupert Murdoch at age 81 tweets?
I thought the same thing lol. Good on him.
Greta Van Susteren is a member of the COS. I wonder how this will affect her relationship with Fox News.
By the way, why is COS any weirder than any other belief system? My religion teaches us that a man stood in the middle of a desert and had an ongoing conversation with a burning bush.
Virgin births, parting seas, walking on water, two of every animal on a boat, getting swallowed by a whale, etc. We’re all equally nuts, so leave Scientology alone. (And no, I’m not a member and never was.)
Desert Eagle, the belief is not the point. Yes I came from the religion with the burning bush and virgin births. You know how much money I had to put in to stay in? Meh, $5 or so in the collection plate, if I made Sunday mass…what does the Scientologist have to give? You know what happened to me when I left my religion? Absolutely nothing. Talked to the same friends, went on with life….what happens when a Scientologist leaves? You might want to do a little research before you brush this off. No one cares that they believe space aliens were locked in volcanos…it’s their policies and behavior that are a huge problem.
And it’s a very uncomfortable day because I actually need to side with Rupert Murdoch on something!
Belief systems aren’t the issue…it’s the evil practices of the organization. Seriously look up operation clambake. Lots of info on how terrible CO$ is.
Does your religion charge you to find out that a man stood in the middle of a desert and had an ongoing conversation with a burning bush? Because Scientology charges your credit card every step of the way. It’s not the belief system that’s the problem of itself; it’s the manner in which it seeks to obtain a foothold in its followers lives (and refuse to let go when they decide they’ve had enough) that’s the issue.
Basically, Scientology is a pyramid scheme.
News Corp./Fox News is the world’s biggest “cult.”
Yes, totally awaiting Greta’s next move. Or her husband’s behind the curtain…this could get interesting!
I can guarantee you that Tom Cruise will never do another movie for Fox for the rest of his career.
The church will make Murdoch pay for this critique.
And by the church – you mean Tom Cruise. I don’t think Fox will really care if they make a film with Cruise or not.
I’m not usually a Murdoch fan but these tweets made my day.
This, plus the Supreme Court upholds Obama’s health plan. Rupert must be seeing evil everywhere.
